Background / History

Yato was born during the Heian period from his father's wish and is comparatively young among the gods. He has no renowned legends, no official place in Takama-ga-hara's Celestial Registry, and survives as an obscure low-ranking god between the Near Shore and Far Shore. As faith in gods declines, he worries that prolonged lack of commissions could cause him to disappear. 66 71

His father, Fujisaki Kōto, forced the younger Yato into the role of a Calamity God, ordering him to slaughter humans and collect their ears. When Yato began to change under the influence of his first Regalia, his father arranged for that Regalia to become corrupted into a Yokai, forcing Yato to kill her himself. 81

After Tomone resigns, Yato is left without a Regalia and advertises an errand service for five yen per request. Though he accepts work ranging from exorcisms to finding lost property, he refuses Gu Mo's increasingly extravagant offer for a killing job, unwilling to return to his former path. 65 67

Yato saves Iki Hiyori after she is injured while trying to protect him from a car. When her soul becomes separated from her body, he temporarily contracts her as a Regalia without replacing her name, preventing her memories from being erased. 67 70

During a Time Shift and Chimi Moryo outbreak, Yato joins Gu Mo in battle with Hiyori as his katana. The event makes him reconsider his purpose as a War God and briefly inspires him to consider working alongside Gu Mo to confront the growing Yokai threat. 70 73

Yato is later drawn into Fujisaki Kōto's tournament scheme and loses his battle against his father. After Kōto's death, Yato is left conflicted rather than vengeful; he seeks out Gu Mo and accepts the advice to move forward in the new era. 91 94

Yato is a young-looking god with purple hair and blue eyes. His outward appearance often clashes with the dignity expected of a deity, particularly when he is performing cheap errands or advertising his services. 76 77

His poverty and lack of recognition make him insecure and occasionally melodramatic, but he retains a personal boundary: despite being tempted by an offer equivalent to tens of thousands of ordinary commissions, he refuses to accept murder work. He wants to shed the Calamity God identity imposed upon him rather than profit from it. 66 67

Yato is cautious around his father and initially avoids large-scale Yokai incidents when unarmed. Nevertheless, he is protective of Hiyori, shields her when Gu Mo transforms, and takes responsibility for purifying Bishamonten's corrupted Regalia rather than allowing Hiyori to endanger herself. 73 79 81

Time Shift Incident

Yato saves Hiyori, contracts her as a Regalia, and joins Gu Mo against a city-wide Chimi Moryo outbreak. Afterward, he explains the Near Shore, Far Shore, and Time Shifts to Hiyori, while online accounts begin describing a god who saved people during the disaster. 70 72

Bishamonten Conflict and Fujisaki Kōto's Schemes

Threatened by Bishamonten and manipulated by his father's plans, Yato reluctantly relies on Hiiro while continuing to protect Hiyori.
