Background / History

Sasuke is a young Uchiha who lives alone after losing loved ones at an early age. His loneliness and the pain of that loss initially leave him distant from his classmates, but they also create an unspoken connection with Chiye Jun, who recognizes that they have endured similar hardships 9.

At the Academy, Sasuke is regarded as the class’s top student and is especially admired for his Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique. He initially dismisses Chiye Jun as unworthy of a spar, only to be defeated by Chiye Jun’s taijutsu and superior Great Fireball Technique 7 8.

Rather than withdrawing after defeat, Sasuke challenges Chiye Jun again in a pure taijutsu contest. He repeatedly rises after being knocked down and eventually accepts Chiye Jun’s offer of friendship, inviting him home for breakfast 9. Their friendship deepens when Chiye Jun trains him, forces his Sharingan awakening through provocation, and celebrates his birthday with cake and fireworks 12 13.

After graduation, Sasuke joins Kakashi Hatake’s Team 7 alongside Chiye Jun, Naruto, and Sakura. He participates in the bell test, the bandit mission, and the Land of Waves operation, where his coordination with Naruto becomes increasingly apparent 22 24 35 41.

During the Chūnin Exams, Orochimaru takes an interest in Sasuke’s Sharingan and seeks to corrupt him. Sasuke is eventually abducted by the Sound Ninja Four, accepts an Awakening Heart Pill in pursuit of greater power, and leaves Konoha for Orochimaru’s side 80 102 217.

After years away from Konoha, Sasuke becomes one of Orochimaru’s principal subordinates. He develops powerful Lightning Release techniques, masters his curse mark, and receives a Kusanagi Sword, but eventually turns on Orochimaru, defeats him through ocular power, and absorbs part of his strength 291 328. He subsequently forms Team Snake with Suigetsu, Guren, and Jugo to pursue Uchiha Itachi 331.

Sasuke’s confrontation with Itachi forces him to face the truth behind the Uchiha clan massacre. Chiye Jun shows him the history of the clan and reveals Danzo’s role in coercing Itachi; Tobi later corroborates the account. Learning that Itachi had protected him throughout his life redirects Sasuke’s hatred toward Danzo and the forces responsible for the tragedy 363 364 365.

Sasuke later returns to Konoha with his team and reaches a cooperative agreement with Tsunade. He agrees to help protect Konoha and Naruto in exchange for the return of Naka Shrine to the Uchiha clan, while secretly obtaining permission to pursue Danzo without causing a massacre in the village 383 384. Following Danzo’s death and the public disclosure of the massacre’s truth, Sasuke is reinstated as a Konoha shinobi and promoted to chūnin 406 407.

Although his reputation is restored, Sasuke chooses to join Sunset Village in order to live alongside Itachi and pursue a future beyond Konoha’s old suspicions 420. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, he reunites with Naruto as an ally, fights alongside Itachi and the Allied Shinobi Forces, receives Six Paths power from Hagoromo, and helps oppose Obito, Madara, and Kaguya 439 442 460 472 474.

Appearance

Sasuke is typically portrayed with an expressionless, composed face and a reserved demeanor.

  • Wears blue clothing bearing the Uchiha fan crest on the back 9.
  • Keeps his hands in his pockets when detached or dismissive 23 32.
  • His Sharingan manifests as scarlet eyes with black tomoe 12.
  • Continues to wear the Uchiha crest even while serving under Orochimaru, reflecting his attachment to his clan identity 291.
  • During his period as a rogue ninja, he is seen in a white shirt and blue pants while carrying a Kusanagi Sword 294 312.
  • His Eternal Mangekyō Sharingan and later Rinnegan markedly alter his ocular appearance during the Fourth Shinobi World War 439 472 473.

Personality

Sasuke is quiet, stoic, and proud. He often responds with blunt dismissal—particularly toward Naruto—but does not let defeat diminish his desire to improve. After losing to Chiye Jun, he immediately seeks another fight and continues training despite being physically outmatched 7 9.

His outward coldness conceals loneliness and a desire for companionship. Sasuke is visibly affected when Chiye Jun remembers his birthday, prepares a cake, and sets off fireworks for him; he thanks Chiye Jun and formally accepts their friendship 13.

He is highly competitive, especially with Naruto. Their arguments frequently turn into fights, yet they can cooperate effectively when their teammates are endangered 13 23 41.

Sasuke’s drive to avenge the Uchiha clan eventually overwhelms his ties to Konoha. He consciously rejects Naruto’s attempts to bring him home, believing that friendship and other bonds would weaken the hatred he considers necessary to kill Itachi 312. His pursuit of power makes him vulnerable to Orochimaru’s influence and leads him to embrace dangerous methods, including the curse mark and the absorption of Orochimaru’s power 217 328.

Despite his claims of having severed every bond, Sasuke continues to show concern for others. He saves Naruto from falling, accepts a gift intended for Naruto from Kabuto, protects Shion, and uses Kagutsuchi to save Guren from Amaterasu’s flames 157 202 292 379 380. His experiences with Killer B also force him to acknowledge the importance of teamwork and the value of the comrades he once left behind 379.

After learning the truth about Itachi, Sasuke is shaken into reassessing his hatred. Though he remains determined to avenge his clan, his goals broaden from single-minded vengeance to restoring the Uchiha clan and protecting those he accepts as his own 363 365 384 466. By the Fourth Shinobi World War, he is willing to fight alongside Naruto and the Allied Shinobi Forces against threats to the shinobi world 442 460 472.

Abilities & Skills

Sharingan

Sasuke awakens his Sharingan during training with Chiye Jun after being pushed into an emotional outburst over insults to the Uchiha clan 12.

  • Awakens early due to Chiye Jun’s deliberate provocation 12.

  • Fire Style: Phoenix Flower Fire Technique — used during Team 7’s bell exercise to bombard Kakashi and support Chiye Jun’s attack 24.

Lightning Release

After leaving Konoha, Sasuke develops a range of Lightning Release techniques and integrates lightning chakra with his Kusanagi Sword 291.

  • Chidori Stream — releases high-voltage currents around Sasuke’s body, repelling Naruto and Sai while providing a defensive electric field 312.
  • Chidori Sharp Spear — a self-created long-range Lightning Release technique used in Sasuke’s attack on Orochimaru 328.
  • Kusanagi Sword: Chidori Blade — channels Lightning Release through Sasuke’s Kusanagi Sword for high-speed cutting attacks 291 379.
  • Kirin — Sasuke’s most powerful Lightning Release technique. After forming thunderclouds with Fire Release, he directs a natural lightning strike at Itachi; Itachi survives only by manifesting Susanoo 362.

Sasuke obtains and later masters a curse mark through Orochimaru’s influence.

  • Consumes an Awakening Heart Pill provided by the Sound Ninja Four, which awakens the curse mark and leaves him apparently dead during the transformation process 217.

  • Uses a purple Susanoo while fighting Obito during the Fourth Shinobi World War 443.
  • Shields Naruto from the Truth-Seeking Orbs with Susanoo 444.
  • Uses Susanoo to protect allies from the Infinite Tsukuyomi’s light 474.
  • Enhances Susanoo with Jugo’s senjutsu chakra while fighting alongside Naruto 460.

Taijutsu

Sasuke is a determined close-range fighter who continues pressing an opponent even after suffering repeated defeats.

  • Challenges Chiye Jun to a rematch focused on pure taijutsu 9.
  • Endures a prolonged spar and repeatedly returns to fight after being knocked down 12.
  • Works alongside Chiye Jun in the bell exercise before Kakashi traps them with Earth Style: Headhunter Jutsu 24.
  • Copies Rock Lee’s taijutsu with the Sharingan and uses it against Gaara 164.
  • Continues fighting Deidara with taijutsu when his chakra is exhausted 339.

Swordsmanship

Sasuke becomes an accomplished swordsman after receiving a Kusanagi Sword from Orochimaru.

  • Carries a Kusanagi Sword as one of his defining weapons after leaving Konoha 291.
  • Uses the sword in his confrontation with Naruto and Team 7 during their reunion 312.

Chiye Jun helps awaken his Sharingan and celebrates his birthday, cementing their friendship 7 9 12 13. Sasuke later identifies Chiye Jun as his first friend, even while pursuing revenge and power 205. Chiye Jun reveals the truth of Itachi’s life and the Uchiha massacre to Sasuke, helping redirect his hatred toward Danzo and persuading him to return to Konoha 363 364 384.
  • Naruto Uzumaki — Competitive teammate and frequent argument partner. Though Sasuke calls Naruto an idiot, the two cooperate to save Kakashi and fight Haku 11 23 41 46. • Suigetsu, Guren, and Jugo — Sasuke recruits the three former Orochimaru affiliates into Team Snake for his pursuit of Itachi. Though they frequently flatter or frustrate him, Sasuke protects them in battle and later returns to Konoha with them 331 379 383.
  • Tsunade — Following his return, Sasuke negotiates directly with Tsunade for Konoha’s trust, protection of Naruto, and restoration of Naka Shrine to the Uchiha clan 384. Tsunade later oversees his reinstatement and promotion to chūnin after Itachi’s name is cleared 407.
