Background & History
Thousand Years of Death was originally developed by Sakumo Hatake and later passed down to Kakashi. Kakashi employs it during Team 7’s bell test. 5 24
On the Third Hokage’s orders, Kakashi covertly protects, monitors, and evaluates Chiye Jun after Root targets the boy. During the confrontation, he fights four Root operatives while Chiye Jun handles the others. 10 11
After the Academy graduation, Kakashi becomes the instructor of the expanded Team 7: Chiye Jun, Naruto Uzumaki, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno. He uses the bell-grabbing survival exercise to assess their combat ability and teamwork, ultimately accepting all four as Konoha genin. 22 26
Following Tsunade’s medical-ninja reforms, Team 7’s composition changes. Sakura joins the medical corps and is assigned to Kiba and Shino’s team, while Hinata becomes part of Kakashi’s Team 7 alongside Chiye Jun, Naruto, and Sasuke; the squad is authorized to add a fifth, dedicated medical ninja. 206
Kakashi later forms a family with Li Wanji and becomes the father of triplets. He takes pride in having his children enter the Ninja Academy early, although Li Wanji objects to his strict focus on their schooling. 224 279
Appearance
Kakashi has white hair, usually wears a mask, and keeps his forehead protector lowered over his left eye. His visible eye is described as a distinctive “dead-fish eye.” 10
- His concealed left eye is the three-tomoe Sharingan. 39
- Removing his mask reveals a notably handsome face and a beauty mark near the corner of his mouth. 25
- He wears a forehead protector, ninja vest, and carries kunai. 10 24
- He is frequently seen reading Make-Out Paradise. 24
- Kakashi began wearing his mask as a child to conceal the metal braces used to correct the severe dental damage caused by his addiction to sweets. Though the original reason became public after Tsunade revealed it while sleep-talking, he continues to regard the mask as part of his identity. 207
Personality
Kakashi is loyal to the Third Hokage and initially serves as both Chiye Jun’s protector and observer. He recognizes Chiye Jun’s unusual potential but remains alert to the risks surrounding the rapidly growing prodigy. 10 32
As a teacher, he values practical teamwork over individual talent. Although he appears casual and often reads during training, he pushes Team 7 through dangerous exercises, adjusts his approach when their abilities surpass expectations, and increasingly invests in their development. 23 25 32 44
He is protective of his students in combat. He orders Team 7 to protect Li Wanji rather than join his fight against Zabuza, stops Naruto from recklessly entering battle, and saves Chiye Jun from crashing into a rock wall during their duel. 25 39
Kakashi is intensely private about his personal life and initially struggles with the attention surrounding his unmasked appearance and prospective Hokage appointment. He nevertheless accepts the responsibilities of leadership after the war and seeks to reform Konoha’s governance rather than rule alone. 207 405 478
Abilities & Skills
Jōnin Combat Prowess
Kakashi is an elite jōnin capable of adapting rapidly when confronted with unfamiliar techniques.
- Held off and defeated multiple Root ninja during the attempted assassination of Chiye Jun. 10 11
- Initially struggled against Chiye Jun’s close-range taijutsu, then shifted to evasive movement and ninjutsu to regain control. 24
- Defeated Zabuza after escaping the Water Prison, using the Sharingan to disrupt Zabuza’s movements and gain the initiative. 41
- During Pain’s invasion, rapidly deduces the Deva Path’s offensive absorption, defensive repulsion, and cooldown limitations, then coordinates with Chōji and Chōza Akimichi despite being heavily depleted. 387
- Fights alongside Obito during the Fourth Shinobi World War and provides tactical analysis of Kamui’s dimensional mechanics. 436 468
Sharingan
Kakashi possesses a three-tomoe Sharingan in his left eye, normally concealed beneath his forehead protector. 39
- Uses it against Zabuza during the Land of Waves mission. 39 41
- Copies Zabuza’s Water Style techniques, including Water Dragon Bullet and Great Waterfall Technique. 41
- Its effectiveness is limited by Zabuza’s Hidden Mist Technique, which removes visual information. 39
- Later awakens the Mangekyō Sharingan and employs Kamui during the Akatsuki campaign, but its chakra cost leaves him incapacitated after excessive use. 269 278
- Recognizes during the war that Obito’s space-time technique is linked to the same Kamui dimension as his own eye, allowing the two former teammates to coordinate their abilities. 436 442 468
Earth Release
Kakashi uses Earth Release for defense, restraint, and battlefield control.
- Earth Style: Earth-Style Wall — Raises an earthen barrier to block attacks; used against Root and Chiye Jun. 11 25
- Earth Style: Headhunter Jutsu — Pulls targets underground, leaving only their heads exposed; used to trap Chiye Jun and Sasuke during the bell test. 24
- Combines the Fang Pursuit Technique with Earth Release to have summoned dogs emerge from the ground and restrain Zabuza. 46
Lightning Release: Raikiri
Kakashi uses Raikiri in his battle against Zabuza. 47
- Its attack is powerful enough that Haku sacrifices himself by intercepting it to save Zabuza. 47
- Uses Raikiri against Pain’s Deva Path, though the attack is diverted by the opponent’s Rinnegan abilities. 387
- Employs Lightning Release: Lightning Tiger Annihilation, shaping lightning-nature chakra into an electric hound during the same battle. 387
- Can create a Lightning Release Shadow Clone Technique, which transforms into lightning after being struck and electrocutes the attacker. 387
Genjutsu
Kakashi can use genjutsu for nonlethal control.
- Puts Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura to sleep before accepting Chiye Jun’s one-on-one challenge. 25
Chakra Capacity
Kakashi’s Sharingan places a severe burden on his chakra reserves, contributing to his collapse after the Akatsuki mission and his exhaustion against Pain. 278 387
- Chiye Jun uses the Chakra Amplification Technique on Kakashi after the Akatsuki campaign, permanently increasing his chakra capacity and ending his reputation for being chronically chakra-starved. 278
- Kakashi later becomes dependent on the sensation of replenishment provided by the technique, overuses it, and is hospitalized; Yamato temporarily replaces him as Team 7’s leader. 298 304
Equipment
- Mask — Conceals most of his face and the beauty mark near his mouth. Kakashi began wearing it to hide childhood dental braces and retained it as part of his identity after the braces were no longer needed. 10 25 207
- Forehead protector — Normally covers his left Sharingan. 10 39
- Kunai — Used during the Team 7 survival exercise. 24
- Make-Out Paradise — Manga he reads during training and downtime. 24 44
Relationships
- Hiruzen Sarutobi — The Third Hokage assigns Kakashi to protect, monitor, and assess Chiye Jun; they later discuss using Chiye Jun’s strength to display Konoha’s power in the Chūnin Exams. 10 32
- Chiye Jun — Initially his protected subject, later his student. Kakashi is shocked by Chiye Jun’s strength and hand-seal speed, loses a one-on-one bell-test duel to him, and comes to respect his potential. Chiye Jun later augments Kakashi’s chakra reserves and reassures him after the Fourth Shinobi World War. 10 11 25 36 278 478
- Naruto Uzumaki — One of Kakashi’s Team 7 students. Kakashi defeats him easily in the bell test but later watches him cooperate with Sasuke to rescue him from Zabuza’s Water Prison. Though Kakashi initially doubts Naruto’s prospects in the Chūnin Exams, he later accompanies Naruto in seeking peace with the Raikage and continues overseeing his growth. 24 41 74 396 478
- Sasuke Uchiha — One of Kakashi’s Team 7 students. Kakashi tests him during the bell exercise and later fights alongside him during the Land of Waves mission. 24 41
- Sakura Haruno — Initially one of Kakashi’s Team 7 students. He carries her back after her leg is badly injured during the bandit mission; she later joins the medical corps and is reassigned to Kiba and Shino’s team. 24 36 206
- Hinata Hyūga — A later member of Kakashi’s Team 7. Kakashi approves of the team’s diligence and agrees to provide more training after observing their independent efforts. 44 206
- Li Wanji — Kakashi protects her during the Land of Waves mission and later forms a family with her. They become parents to triplets, though they disagree over Kakashi’s demanding approach to their children’s education. 39 224 279
- Obito Uchiha — Kakashi’s presumed-dead former teammate and the original owner of Kakashi’s Sharingan. Kakashi is devastated to learn that Tobi is Obito, confronts him over Rin’s death and the Infinite Tsukuyomi plan, then ultimately fights beside him against Madara. After the war, Kakashi proposes that they jointly serve as Sixth Hokage. 436 438 442 468 478

- Yamato — Kakashi knows Yamato from their earlier service. When Kakashi is hospitalized due to chakra-related complications, Yamato temporarily assumes leadership of Team 7. 304
Story Role / Major Arcs
Root Assassination Attempt
Kakashi appears when Root operatives ambush Chiye Jun and Naruto. He reveals that the Third Hokage sent him to protect Chiye Jun, though Chiye Jun understands that the assignment also includes surveillance and assessment. 10
Kakashi witnesses Chiye Jun’s Corpse Fusion Technique, Skeleton Resurrection, and near-instant Great Fireball Technique. The display leaves him shocked and jealous of the younger ninja’s extraordinary talent. 11
Team 7 Formation and Bell Test
Kakashi is assigned as Team 7’s jōnin leader. He explains the survival test’s high failure rate and subjects the team to the bell-grabbing exercise. 23
He defeats Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura individually, then battles Chiye Jun and the team’s coordinated assault. After Chiye Jun wins a one-on-one challenge, removes Kakashi’s mask, and the group demonstrates loyalty to one another, Kakashi passes all four students. 24 26
Land of Waves Mission
Kakashi leads Team 7 on the escort mission to the Land of Waves. Once ninja opposition is confirmed, the mission is upgraded from C-rank to B-rank. 37 39
He engages Zabuza while ordering the genin to protect Li Wanji. Zabuza’s Hidden Mist Technique counters Kakashi’s Sharingan, and Kakashi is briefly imprisoned in water before Naruto and Sasuke free him. Kakashi then turns the battle around and defeats Zabuza with Water Style: Great Waterfall Technique. 39 41
During the final conflict, Kakashi battles Zabuza again and unleashes Raikiri; Haku intercepts the attack and dies protecting Zabuza. 46 47
Chūnin Exams and Team Reorganization
Kakashi recommends Team 7 for the Chūnin Exams, though his open concern over Naruto’s likelihood of advancing provokes Naruto’s determination to prove him wrong. 74
After Tsunade introduces reforms requiring medical ninja support, Team 7 is reorganized around Chiye Jun, Naruto, Sasuke, and Hinata, with authorization for a fifth medical-ninja position. Sakura remains in the medical corps on Kiba and Shino’s team. 206
Akatsuki Campaign and Chakra Augmentation
Kakashi joins the campaign against Akatsuki and battles Kakuzu, destroying one of Kakuzu’s hearts with Raikiri after Chiye Jun disrupts the enemy’s attack. 274
He collapses after overusing his Mangekyō Sharingan during the mission. Chiye Jun responds by using Chakra Amplification Technique to expand Kakashi’s chakra reserves, though Kakashi’s subsequent reliance on the technique leads to chakra addiction, hospitalization, and Yamato’s temporary appointment as Team 7’s leader. 278 298 304
Pain’s Assault
During Pain’s invasion of Konoha, Kakashi confronts the Deva Path and Asura Path. He uses Raikiri, Lightning Release Shadow Clone Technique, and tactical deductions concerning Pain’s Rinnegan powers to coordinate a counterattack with Chōji and Chōza Akimichi. 387
Despite his efforts, Kakashi depletes his chakra and falls in battle. He briefly reunites with Sakumo in the afterlife before being restored to life with the other victims of Pain’s assault. 387 392
Appointment as Sixth Hokage
Following Danzo’s death and the political turmoil after the Five Kage Summit, Kakashi is selected to become Konoha’s Sixth Hokage. He is measured for a Hokage Rock statue and faces the prospect of public leadership despite preferring privacy. 404 405
Fourth Shinobi World War
Kakashi learns that Tobi is Obito Uchiha, the former teammate long believed dead beneath Kannabi Bridge. The revelation forces him to confront his guilt over Rin’s death and Obito’s descent into extremism. 436 437
He enters the Kamui dimension to confront Obito directly, attempts to persuade him to return to Konoha, and later coordinates with him to send Naruto to safety and oppose Six Paths Madara. 442 467 468
Postwar Dual Hokage Era
After the war, Kakashi becomes Sixth Hokage. Recognizing both Obito’s redemption and the demands of governing Konoha, he proposes a dual Hokage system in which he and Obito jointly lead the village, with one managing internal affairs and the other external affairs. 478
