Background / History

Kakashi first encounters Qian Yun at a scroll shop alongside Might Guy. Suspicious of Qian Yun's expensive Lightning Release scroll and unfamiliar background, he questions whether Qian Yun is an infiltrator or connected to the killings of Konoha's gifted youths. After hearing that Qian Yun was the orphaned child of commoner ninja who lacked a sponsor for Ninja Academy admission, Kakashi reassesses his assumptions. 2 3

Recognizing Qian Yun's lack of basic training, Kakashi teaches him chakra extraction and the Three-Body Technique. When Qian Yun offers the scroll as payment, Kakashi returns most of its cost and teaches practical applications of the technique as well. He then investigates Qian Yun's identity at Konoha Hospital and later clears him of involvement in the prodigy killings. 3

After realizing he misjudged Qian Yun, Kakashi apologizes and teaches him a concealment technique. By the time of their reunion at the Ninja Academy, he is stunned by Qian Yun's physical growth and ANBU appointment. 4 40

Personality

Kakashi is initially guarded and strongly judgmental, seeing people in terms of talent and usefulness. His suspicion of Qian Yun stems from genuine concern for Konoha's safety, but he is willing to admit error once the facts are clear. Defeat and embarrassment make him visibly angry during the Chunin Exams, and his fixation on winning causes him to overlook Qian Yun's deceptions. During the Land of Crafts mission, he initially argues that retrieving the stolen mission funds takes priority over Shisui's condition. Kakashi serves under Qian Yun alongside the five-year-old Shisui. He helps fend off rogue ninja and Hidden Mist attackers, supports Shisui after Qian Yun's staged deaths, and is repeatedly frustrated by Qian Yun's manipulative behavior. 46 47

When the Third Raikage demands Shisui's Mangekyo Sharingan, Kakashi rejects Qian Yun's apparent willingness to trade Shisui away. He escapes with Shisui, later realizing Qian Yun had arranged events to lure the enemy away from them. 49 50
