Background / History
Bael began as a Lemure born on Avernus after a soul husk washed ashore from the Styx. Over a long life defined by slaughter and the Blood War, he advanced through every major devil rank until becoming an archdevil, Avernus's Dark Demon General, and eventually Lord of Avernus 1082.
As Devil General, Bael served Zariel for countless years and commanded one of Avernus's strongest field armies. He was revered by legion devils for his military achievements, his focus on warfare rather than public politics, and his ability to defeat Abyssal Lords; in one campaign, he fought two Bright Moon Legendary Abyssal Lords and slew one 831.
Bael privately opposed Zariel's offensive strategy. He believed the devils should consolidate within the Bronze Citadel, reduce casualties, exhaust the demons through defense, accumulate strength, and eventually counterattack into the Abyss 833 939. Despite presenting himself as Zariel's loyal general, he coveted her throne and ultimately deposed her, becoming Avernus's acting Archduke 833 939.
After seizing power, Bael imprisoned Zariel beneath the Bronze Citadel and used a secret art obtained from Tiamat to slowly absorb her power through prolonged torture. This strengthened him rapidly but kept him confined to the central fortress for centuries 1067 1068.
Appearance
Bael is an exceptionally large Pit Fiend whose imposing body and equipment reflect his status as a battlefield commander and ruler of Avernus 831.
- Red scales covering his body.
- Enormous bat-like wings larger than those of an ordinary Pit Fiend.
- Green venom dripping from his teeth, corrosive enough to damage the ground.
- Heavy devil armor decorated with demonic patterns, sharp barbs, and reinforced plates.
- A belt fashioned from the severed heads of twelve Legendary archangels.
- A massive serrated greatsword that radiates intense heat 831.
- Later wore lighter armor while ruling from the Bronze Citadel's central fortress 1068.
Personality
Bael is ambitious, cunning, ruthless, and intensely committed to the Blood War. Unlike many high-ranking devils, he began as a Lemure and retained a strong understanding of low-ranking devils and the attritional cost of warfare. His stated purpose was to end the Blood War against the Abyss 940 983.
As a general, Bael was practical and strategically minded. He favored defensive warfare not from passivity, but because he believed Avernus could use the Bronze Citadel to minimize devil casualties, bleed the demons, attract mercenary support, and prepare for a decisive counteroffensive 832 833 939.
After becoming Lord of Avernus, Bael became increasingly isolated and paranoid. His centuries of seclusion, his absorption of Zariel's power, and his refusal to leave the central fortress damaged his standing among the devils, who increasingly regarded their former frontline general as cowardly 1061 1073 1075.

Lord of Avernus Authority
As acting Lord of Avernus, Bael could use the Bronze Citadel, its defenders, and Avernus's favor to strengthen himself.
- Reached the 24th stage of Legend through his lordly authority 1076.
- Drew power from nearly every devil in the Bronze Citadel through connections linking the legions to his body, temporarily reaching the 25th stage of Legend 1076.

Story Role / Major Arcs
Devil General of Avernus
Bael first appears as the commander of a vast Blood War army marked with his name. He summons Huo Ling to his camp, recognizes Huo Ling's role in the defeat of an Abyssal Lord, discusses military strategy, and probes Huo Ling's stance on attacking versus defending against the Abyss 829 831 832.
Deposition of Zariel
Bael's ambition becomes clear after his discussions with Huo Ling: he wants Zariel's throne and believes his defensive strategy is the path to winning the Blood War 833. He later succeeds in removing Zariel, seizes the Bronze Citadel, and becomes acting Archduke of Avernus 939.
Rule of the Bronze Citadel
As acting Archduke, Bael centralizes Avernus's forces in the Bronze Citadel and turns Zariel's former palace into a fortress. He offers Huo Ling a recommendation to Asmodeus in return for a fifty-year garrison commitment, but Huo Ling's influence grows beyond Bael's control 946 947 981.
Conflict with Huo Ling
Bael cannot legally remove Huo Ling despite the latter's expansion into multiple war zones, since Huo Ling exploits Purgatory's rules while continuing to provide military benefits. Bael increasingly sees Huo Ling as a threat who may repeat Bael's own betrayal of Zariel 981 983.
Fall of Bael
After rumors expose Bael's alleged collusion with demons and his devouring of Zariel's power, his support erodes 1072 1073. Huo Ling attacks the Bronze Citadel and challenges him; Bael accepts battle, uses the citadel's power to reach the 25th stage of Legend, and rallies his troops with the Brass Horn 1075 1076 1078.
Bael is ultimately overwhelmed by Huo Ling's forces and retreats to the central fortress. After more than ten days of fighting, Huo Ling pierces him through the chest with a halberd, kills him, and takes the Avernus Crown to become the new Lord of Avernus 1080 1081 1082.
