Background

Tongtian began as Yu Chen's Dharma Aspect, named after Yu Chen obtained the Extinction Sword and received recognition from Heaven and Earth. His authority developed around finality, decline, and the ending of all things. 506

When he first appeared independently, Tongtian described himself as cultivating alongside Yu Chen. He later clarified that he was Yu Chen's incarnation, though their relationship was not one of simple identity: Yu Chen once housed Tongtian's true spirit, while Tongtian had once attempted to seize Yu Chen's foundation. They share a Dao Fruit and are described as two sides of the same coin. 846 847 909

As his spirituality matured, Tongtian became increasingly capable of acting beyond Yu Chen's direct awareness. He can hide information from Yu Chen and seeks an existence no longer defined as Yu Chen's derivative. Yu Chen, rather than opposing this, hopes Tongtian can attain a broader future of his own. 920 967

Tongtian is cold, proud, direct, and highly intolerant of obstruction. He answers threats with overwhelming force, whether by forcing a feudal ruler into submission, sealing Life Isle and Ancestor Isle, or pursuing Xuan Qing until his escape routes are exhausted. 847 851

His ruthlessness is tempered by a distinct sense of order. He assists Yu Chen in saving civilians used as fuel for a divine weapon, uses gifts from the Southern Sea Dragon Palace to bless its living beings, and is disturbed by the suffering inflicted upon children in the Divine Artifact Universe. 848 854 949

As a teacher, Tongtian is demanding rather than gentle. He drives his disciples through relentless examinations and tribulation training, but gives them methods, treasures, and opportunities to survive and advance. 948 987

Tongtian governs the process by which things decline, reach their final state, and pass into conclusion. His power can sever the transformations by which an opponent renews, escapes, or restores themselves.

Tongtian battles Lu Gui through the fall of the Xia Dynasty, using the treasure banner, the four swords, and Heaven's sacrificial light to defeat him. 881
