Background / History
Before Sherlock's transmigration, John had not yet retired from assassination. Helen regularly invited the newly arrived, solitary Sherlock to dinner, bringing the two households together. John and Sherlock eventually became sincere friends without conflicting interests, despite their constant insults and teasing. 4 6
John's wife Helen had lost the ability to bear children after Sherlock saved her from a previous illness. Doro subsequently became the couple's beloved child figure: John and Helen cared for her during the day, took her out to play, and often kept her overnight while Sherlock worked. 5 6
John was born into the Ruska Roma, one of the twelve High Table families and the dominant force in the Slavic underworld. He trained at its theater-disguised assassin school, initially associated with the Kikimora bodyguard path while aspiring to become Baba Yaga. 83 88
Appearance
John is a bearded, weathered man whose usual presentation combines the restrained style of an assassin with a worn aristocratic air. 4 77
- Often wears a black suit with a black shirt. 77
- Has a large Jesus tattoo across his back. 81
- His beard is distinctive enough that Doro dislikes being pricked by it. 6
- Received a more specialized tailcoat-like suit from Sherlock to improve his safety. 109
Personality
John is fiercely protective of those he considers family. He treats Doro with patient affection, risks confronting supernatural danger with only a handgun when Sherlock appears to be in trouble, and readily supports Sherlock even when unsettled by the latter's methods. 5 6 19
As an assassin, he is practical, disciplined, and focused on results. He understands the Continental Hotel's rules, prepares contingency routes and intelligence, and recognizes when a direct fight must become a war. 12 15 80
He strongly favors precision, concealment, and controlled violence over spectacle. This places him at odds with Sherlock's overwhelming-firepower philosophy and frustrates him when Anna and Mindy favor explosives and suppression fire over the techniques he taught them. 80 130 132
Abilities & Skills
Assassination and Gunplay
John is an elite assassin whose accuracy, movement, and target prioritization far exceed Sherlock's conventional combat ability.
- Uses controlled bursts and precise headshots; while protecting Ethan, he turns a rifle's three-round bursts into a lethal rhythm that pins down an opposing force. 19
- Employs fast target prioritization, immediately eliminating a sniper before engaging nearby ambushers. 79
- Uses the Mozambique Drill and battle-honed footwork to eliminate enemies far faster than Sherlock can. 80
- Can identify when an interrogated target is lying through observation alone. 80
- Remains fundamentally human and relies on weapons and equipment rather than supernatural abilities. 6 76
Tactical Planning and Underworld Knowledge
John possesses extensive knowledge of assassin-world protocols and intelligence networks.
- Explains the Continental Hotel's changing rules, including the war-zone arrangement in which nighttime is protected but daytime fighting is permitted. 11 12
- Understands the intelligence bazaar's identity-bound wristbands, transaction system, and wartime protections. 13
- Uses Continental channels to collect and organize intelligence on the Ten Rings, expanding Sherlock's rescue routes into multiple contingency plans. 15
- Recognizes the political consequences of confronting the Ruska Roma and advises caution when Josef is believed to be on its territory. 83
Mentorship
John trains others through demanding physical, technical, and academic discipline.
- Forces Sherlock through a month of running, hand-to-hand combat, and firearms training, turning his initially poor fundamentals into reliable shooting and improved physical capability. 95
- Trains Anna as an assassin while insisting that mathematics, physics, and chemistry are foundational skills. 96
- Sends Anna and Mindy on difficult assignments without direct intervention to test their ability to operate independently. 128
- Debriefs and reprimands his students when their effective but highly visible methods violate Continental expectations of low-profile work. 131
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- 1964 Ford Mustang — John’s prized vintage car; its theft by Iosef Tarasov begins the Tarasov conflict. It is later recovered from Viggo’s manor. 75 78 80
- Handguns and long guns — His standard tools; he carries a pistol even when investigating supernatural threats and uses rifles in open combat. 6 19
- HK416 — Used alongside Sherlock during the battle outside the New York Continental Hotel. 79
- Continental bulletproof suit — A black suit supplied through Winston and the Continental armory. 76 77
- Specialized tailcoat suit — Later prepared by Sherlock with functions intended to improve John’s safety. 109
Relationships
- Helen — Wife and partner. Their quiet home life and mutual care for Doro form John’s central motivation for avoiding a return to the assassin world. 4 5 126
- Sherlock Flamel — Neighbor, best friend, and frequent sparring partner. John trusts Sherlock in combat, trains his physical skills, and receives Sherlock’s support during the Tarasov war. 6 79 95
- Doro — Treated by John and Helen as a daughter after Helen’s infertility; John is affectionate and protective despite Doro regularly defeating him at games. 5 6
- Anna / Eve / Ana de Armas — Disciple accepted by John amid Ruska Roma obligations. He trains her as a Kikimora-minded assassin, though her tactics increasingly follow Sherlock’s explosive influence. 89 90 96 132
- Mindy Macready — John’s adopted daughter and apprentice; Anna’s friend and classmate. 125
- Winston — Old acquaintance and Continental Hotel manager. Winston provides John weapons, protection, and favors, though John remains wary of the costs behind “free” assistance. 76 77
- Viggo Tarasov — Former employer and former boss whose family becomes John’s enemy after Iosef steals the Mustang and destroys treasured photographs. 78 80
- The Director — Leader within John’s Ruska Roma past. Her attempt to bind John and Eve to the family creates tension and ultimately fails. 85 89 90

John accompanies Sherlock, Helen, and Doro to the Middle East to investigate Tony Stark’s kidnapping. He explains Continental war-zone procedures, gathers intelligence through its channels, refines the rescue route, and protects Ethan during the assault on the Ten Rings’ base. 10 12 15 18 19
War with the Tarasov Family
After Iosef Tarasov steals John’s Mustang and the burglars destroy irreplaceable family photographs, John and Sherlock declare war on Viggo Tarasov. Training the Next Generation
John trains Sherlock, Anna, and Mindy while attempting to preserve a low-profile life with Helen. Trivia
- Sherlock repeatedly calls John “Old Zhao,” a form of address that consistently irritates him. 11 83
- John’s High Table whitelist status prevents Viggo from placing a Continental bounty on him, provided John does not harm High Table interests. 78
- John views Continental “guides” as more than mentors: they also function as assessors who determine whether new assassins can be trusted. 126
