First Appearance Chapter 9, “Miranda” 9

Background / History

Miranda was raised by her grandfather, Deputy Headmaster Adbe Gorshak, after both of her parents died. She recalls little of them, and later learns that Adbe used a Memory Charm on her after Grindelwald revealed painful truths about her family. This breach of trust becomes the central fracture in their relationship. 48 65

Her exceptional Charms talent emerged in childhood, particularly after her parents' deaths. Grindelwald targeted that talent by placing a magical seed in her mind; it consumed her emotions and magic as it grew, eventually producing Miller, an alternate personality intended to replace her. 57

Miranda first meets Hoffa Bach aboard the Hogwarts Express. She lends him her compartment so he can change, tidies his clothing with magic, and discusses Hogwarts while reading War and Peace. Although she dislikes discussing her family connection to Hogwarts, she reveals that Adbe Gorshak is her grandfather. 9

Sorted into Ravenclaw alongside Hoffa, Miranda becomes one of his first genuine friends. Their early friendship is marked by her habitual lateness, disregard for House points, knowledge of Hogwarts' shifting passages, and willingness to bend rules to secure him access to a restricted library book. 11 12 18

During their first year, Miller covertly sabotages Hogwarts: destroying the teleportation array, admitting dark wizards through a secret passage, poisoning Slughorn, and helping advance Grindelwald's plan. Miranda initially has no memory of Miller's actions. After Hoffa defeats and separates Miller's psychic manifestation, Miranda admits she had known of Miller and had sometimes left him to handle acts she could not face herself; she accepts responsibility for both of them. 56 63 65

Miranda later learns to communicate with Miller under certain circumstances. During later separations from Hoffa, she searches for him and uses forbidden prophetic magic, repeatedly foreseeing his death at great personal cost. 93 385

Appearance

Miranda is a slender witch with fair skin, chestnut hair, round glasses, and a recurring violet fragrance. Her look changes considerably as she grows older, from a short-haired first-year in school robes to a more independent Londoner with shoulder-length hair, dark clothing, makeup, and a motorcycle. 9 93 158 269

  • Round glasses; later described as non-prescription and worn for style 158
  • Initially short chestnut hair; later wears it in a short ponytail or at shoulder length 9 93 268
  • Gray eyes at her first meeting with Hoffa; later described with brown eyes 9 93
  • Often carries or reads Muggle literature, including War and Peace 9
  • Has an androgynous, somewhat distant presence contrasted with Argeleia's more overt glamour 158
  • Keeps a black-and-white bedroom decorated with anatomy sketches and photographs 269

Personality

Miranda is calm, polite, observant, and intellectually independent. She is comfortable reading alone, resists social pressure, and generally refuses to be provoked by Argeleia's mockery. 9 13

Beneath her composed manner, she is rebellious and pragmatic. She treats House points as unimportant, knows how to exploit Hogwarts' hidden routes, forges or obtains permission through family connections, and approaches rules as obstacles rather than absolutes. 12 18

She is also deeply protective of people she considers hers. She repeatedly checks on Hoffa, attempts to reconcile him with Argeleia, protects students during emergencies, and refuses to abandon Hoffa even when doing so endangers her. 16 123 129 407

Her trauma makes her guarded around family, war, and prophecy. She can be teasing and playful with Hoffa, but becomes blunt when he hides danger from her or tries to sacrifice himself alone. 166 269 272 274

Story Role / Major Arcs

First Year at Hogwarts

Miranda becomes Hoffa's first Ravenclaw companion, helping him acclimate to Hogwarts while also pulling him into secret passages, rule-breaking, and conflicts with Argeleia. Her unexplained absences, cold shifts in behavior, and unusual magical exhaustion foreshadow Miller's existence. 9 12 18 46

Miller's Revelation

Hoffa discovers that Miranda's apparent alibi during Miller's attacks is genuine: Miller can act independently while Miranda is unconscious or unaware. Miranda's magical seed, Grindelwald's influence, and buried resentment toward Hogwarts culminate in a confrontation at the Astronomy Tower. 56 57 61 62

After Hoffa defeats Miller's manifested psychic field, Miranda confesses her role in allowing Miller to carry out acts she could not confront herself. She resolves to communicate with Miller rather than continue suppressing him. 63 65

Hogwarts Reconstruction and Wartime Separation

Miranda aids in evacuations, reconstruction, and investigations around Hogwarts. She remains Hoffa's confidante, but their friendship becomes strained by his secrecy, long absences, and fixation on saving Argeleia through time-related magic. 123 129 132 272

London and the Search for Hoffa

After time apart, Miranda interns in London under the Ministry's Dark Magic Defense Office and reunites with Hoffa. She hosts him at the Gorshak family apartment, where their playful familiarity exposes the depth of their attachment. 269 270

When Hoffa prepares to enter the Ministry alone, he imprisons Miranda in a snow chamber to keep her safe, repeating the pattern of excluding her from danger that she resents. 274

The Vanishing Magic Era

When Hoffa loses his memories and magic disappears from the world, Miranda remains beside him. She spends her remaining magic to rescue him, guides him toward Hogsmeade, and uses disguises and local knowledge to bring him back toward the truth of their past. 360 361 363 365

Durmstrang and Sylby

Bound by a prophecy that predicts Hoffa's death, Miranda blocks his path into Durmstrang. She eventually lets him enter, then uses her barriers and magic-prohibition spell to protect him from Sylby. Sylby mortally wounds her, prompting Hoffa to reverse time and prevent that outcome. 406 407 409

In the altered outcome, Hoffa disarms and restrains Miranda before sending her to safety. He publicly calls her his wife and admits that he loves her. 410

Fifty Years Later

After Hoffa dies preserving the timeline, Miranda meets the aged Argeleia while remaining physically young. She gives Argeleia the Heartstone containing Hoffa's essence, allowing the two women to restore him to a new body. 419
