Xiao Wu enrolled at Notting Academy as a work-study student, intending to learn about human society and Soul Master knowledge. Yu Xiaogang repeatedly tried to force her into becoming his disciple through personal pressure and teachers' intervention; she rejected him after learning that he was only Rank 29. 21

When Yu Xiaogang continued pursuing her, Xiao Wu initially sought Fang Yuan as a shield. Fang Yuan accepted her as his second disciple, placing her after Tang San in seniority despite her objections that she was older. 22 He later privately revealed that he knew she was a hundred-thousand-year soul beast in human form and gave her a necklace that concealed her life aura even from most Titled Douluo. 23

Over the following five years, she trained under Fang Yuan alongside Tang San. Their constant sparring, supplemented by Fang Yuan's instruction and special meals, made both of them far more capable combatants than ordinary Soul Masters of their age and rank. 26 35

At the Star Dou Great Forest, Xiao Wu was severely injured during a spar against Tang San's newly acquired third soul skill.
