Background / History

Larvesta lived alone within Mt. Chimney’s magma, surviving by absorbing volcanic energy and taking resources it wanted from other Pokémon. It remained undiscovered for years, even while Mura searched the mountain for its species. Its concealment was connected to a red stone bearing Groudon’s Ω symbol. 102 106 112

The stone had been left with Larvesta by Victini and its mother, Volcarona. After a past volcanic eruption, they chose Mt. Chimney as a suitable place for Larvesta to grow; Larvesta was told to fly north and find Volcarona after evolving. 119

Lin Mo encountered Larvesta when it attempted to steal Advanced Pokémon Energy Orbs from him. Drawn by the Orbs’ concentrated energy, Larvesta emerged from magma and accepted Lin Mo’s wager that it could withstand one move from Tyrantrum. 106

Lin Mo stalled Larvesta with conversation while Tyrantrum secretly stacked Dragon Dance within a Sandstorm. Tyrantrum’s boosted Rock Blast defeated Larvesta in one attack, forcing it to honor the wager and join Lin Mo. 107 108

After receiving an Advanced Pokémon Energy Orb and learning Will-O-Wisp and Flamethrower, Larvesta quickly became attached to Lin Mo. It later retrieved its Mt. Chimney hoard—including a Flame Orb, Heat Rock, and Fire Gems—and offered it to Lin Mo and its new teammates as proof of loyalty. 109 110

Appearance

Larvesta is an unusually large, plump Bug-type Pokémon with a white-furred head and upper body, blue eyes, and five flame-tipped antennae. Its body is warm to the touch and can withstand clinging magma without harm. 102 108 110

• Normally described as roughly 1.5 meters tall; its body expanded to around 2 meters when the Groudon-marked stone activated. 106

Personality

Larvesta was initially proud, territorial, and fiercely independent. It considered Mt. Chimney its domain, refused Lin Mo’s first recruitment offer, and believed it had no reason to obey a human. 106 107

Its arrogance often makes it provocative: it dismisses weaker opponents, takes obvious pride in its flames, and was easily angered by Quilava’s challenge. 107 120 It is also suspicious when Lin Mo appears to be planning something, particularly after being outmaneuvered in their original wager. 129 130

Once convinced that Lin Mo could help it grow, Larvesta became highly affectionate and reward-motivated. It eagerly seeks Energy Orbs and new moves, rubs against Lin Mo for attention, sleeps on his chest, and readily acts cute around him. 109 115

Larvesta is playful and mischievous around its teammates. It enjoys riding Metang, playing with Tyrantrum, acting as a Gym tour guide, and repeatedly watching recordings of its own Contest performance. 116 129 136 152
