History

Founding and ancient glory

Azure Cloud Sect has existed for more than five thousand years and has passed through thirty-six generations of sect masters. Its founding ancestor established the sect in response to the times, and Azure Cloud City later became a vast and prosperous settlement before its destruction in the demonic calamity. 316

A thousand years before Zhang Yang's arrival, Azure Cloud Sect stood among the foremost sects in the world, before which “ten thousand sects bowed.” Its continent-wide domain included the present Azure Cloud Continent, the lands now held by the Cloud Mountain and Cloud Soaring Empires, and numerous later-established sects. 84 85

The demonic calamity

During a great upheaval, Devil Race experts and Demonic Aura threatened the Azure Cloud Continent. Azure Cloud Sect’s patriarchs, disciples, and allied experts used seven Immortal Artifacts as cores and countless Spirit Artifacts as supports to create the Azure Sky Ultimate Cloud Formation. 84

The formation purified the continent’s Demonic Aura and ultimately contracted into a three-hundred-li area around the sect. The seven Immortal Artifacts became the Azure Cloud Seven Peaks, while Devil Race experts and residual Demonic Aura remained sealed within the formation’s final space. 84

For a thousand years, successive disciples sacrificed themselves to maintain the seal, refine the imprisoned threats, and prevent Demonic Aura from escaping. Azure Cloud Master assumed this responsibility three hundred years before the main story and exhausted the sect’s wealth on Spirit Stones needed to power the formation. 84

Decline, betrayal, and isolation

The sect’s obligation to maintain the seal left it impoverished and undermanned. Fifty-five years before the later reforms, two disciples stole the Soul-Suppressing Banner and Thousand-Mountain Seal before joining enemy sects. Fear of further infiltration then caused Azure Cloud Sect to stop accepting disciples for forty years. 281

By the time Zhang Yang joined, the sect had shrunk to only eight members. Despite being an ancient great sect, it had lost control of mines, markets, and much of its practical influence; even surrounding powers doubted that it still existed. 1 15

Zhang Yang’s reforms

Zhang Yang was accepted after solving every trial problem and was eventually entrusted with the sect’s affairs by Azure Cloud Master. He began reopening recruitment, reclaiming resources, and reorganizing the sect around loyalty, shared purpose, and long-term growth. 281

His early reforms included:

• Reclaiming Azure Cloud Sect’s copper and silver mines from unauthorized operators. 6 13
• Taking stock of 175 villages within the sect’s territory. 13
• Recovering authority over Azure Cloud Market and its accumulated taxes. 6
• Distributing a memorable account of sect history to disciples as ideological education. 13

The reforms changed the disciples’ loyalty and mindset, including that of infiltrators and hesitant recruits. Azure Cloud Master eventually withdrew from daily management and allowed Zhang Yang to direct the sect’s development. 93 281

Rise on Azure Cloud Continent

After defeating the Cloud Mountain Empire’s Flying Dragon Army, Azure Cloud Sect demonstrated that it could defend its territory directly. The subsequent settlement brought 1.5 million Spirit Stones and cultivation materials, while Zhang Yang redirected much of the compensation toward sect development, pill refinement, and artifact forging. 31 39

The sect later declared that it would retain only its three-hundred-li core territory while allowing other sects and nations to remain on Azure Cloud Continent—provided they followed Azure Cloud Sect’s plans during the continental crisis. 279 283

Following Azure Cloud Master’s Tribulation Transcendence, the sect openly emerged as a major power. Its strengthened formation, cooperation with Demon Lords, growing disciple corps, and military development made other sects regard it as a threat that could no longer be contained or ignored. 222 252 338

Later expansion

Zhang Yang’s five-year plan called for 100,000 disciples, a 10% Golden Core success rate, a one-million-person Azure Cloud City, branches of the Azure Moon Merchant Association, and the unification of Azure Cloud Continent under sect command. 276

The plan surpassed its manpower goals. Five years later, the sect reported more than 100,000 disciples, major growth in Golden Core and Nascent Soul cultivators, three major alliances, and trade relations with fifty-seven sects. 455

After the God Realm’s ascension, Azure Cloud Master and other senior experts departed for the God Realm. Zhang Yang remained behind to direct Azure Cloud Sect’s defenses and affairs against threats from the Immortal Realm and beyond. 925 926

Azure Sky Ultimate Cloud Formation

The Azure Sky Ultimate Cloud Formation is the foundation of Azure Cloud Sect’s authority over Azure Cloud Continent.

Azure Cloud Seven Peaks

Later, the sect adopts a nine-peak structure with distinct Dao focuses and shared governance. Azure Cloud Peak specializes in Martial Dao, Jade Cloud Peak in Divine Dao, and Heaven-Supporting Peak and Heaven-Patrolling Peak in Immortal Dao. 1211

Organization

Leadership and governance

Azure Cloud Master served as sect master and primary guardian of the formation for centuries. He gradually entrusted management and external affairs to Zhang Yang, who later assumes the position of sect master and control of the Azure Cloud Grand Formation. 39 430 902

The sect’s later governance model divides decision-making among the nine peak masters. They jointly determine sect structure and rules, while the sect master retains veto authority. 1211

Under Zhang Yang’s reforms, the settlement expands into Azure Cloud Town and later Azure Cloud City. It becomes a commercial, educational, and administrative center with accumulated assets worth tens of billions of Spirit Stones. 455 902

Azure Moon Merchant Association

The Azure Moon Merchant Association manages commercial expansion and trade, with Situ Mingyue playing a major role in its operations.
