Background / History
The Sage Master is an elderly scholar-cultivator of Langya Sacred Land, approximately 2,370 years old. Despite reaching the Tribulation Realm, he considers himself first and foremost a scholar and does not reject ordinary human relationships or rites. 346
Before his breakthrough, he had remained at the Mid Tribulation Realm for centuries. His Sage Dao depended on developing new theories, but after drawing on more than two millennia of experience, he could no longer advance his ideas or cultivation. His theories were further damaged when some of his words “died” within Ming Ye’s Dao Domain. 422
Conflict and alliance with Azure Cloud Sect
Langya Sacred Land’s involvement against Azure Cloud Sect left it isolated after other major sects severed ties. The Sage Master recognized that Langya had been manipulated and invited Azure Cloud Master to negotiate at the continental border. 342
He initially attempted to pressure Azure Cloud Sect by stressing its precarious position, but Zhang Yang repeatedly disrupted his negotiations, twisted his statements into apparent goodwill, and publicized an edited “Sage Master Interview” in the Azure Cloud Gazette. The interview made the public believe the Sage Master had personally advocated for rogue cultivators and supported Azure Cloud Sect’s policies. 344 345 347
Forced by Langya Sacred Land’s worsening position, he agreed to an alliance with Azure Cloud Sect. He also attempted to secure a marriage between his son, Kong Xiuping, and Situ Mingyue, partly to improve his son’s character and partly to strengthen the alliance. 354 358
Tribulation transcendence and the Sage Dao
Zhang Yang later sent him a small booklet whose theories revitalized his Great Dao. The Sage Master asked Azure Cloud Sect and its Demon Lords to guard his Dao during tribulation, successfully entering the Late Tribulation Transcendence Realm. 422 424 427
Afterward, he increasingly treated Zhang Yang as an indispensable fellow Dao seeker. Zhang Yang challenged his narrow focus on his own Dao and pushed him to understand enlightenment through heaven, earth, and living beings. The Sage Master began traveling through Azure Cloud City, observing ordinary people, institutions, and Zhang Yang’s methods of ideological education. 555 569
He eventually recognized that rules must correspond to the interests of the overwhelming majority rather than merely impose personal ideals. Failed mediation attempts among major factions further convinced him that prestige and moral appeals alone could not resolve conflicts rooted in competing interests. 576 952
Establishment and expansion of the Sage Dao
The Sage Master publicly expounded the Sage Dao after three months of preparation. He defined its purpose as nurturing all living beings according to the laws of heaven and earth, established the Three Trials of Questioning the Heart, and began teaching Sage Words arts to Azure Cloud Sect disciples. 912
He planned to dissolve Langya Sacred Land after Azure Cloud Master’s ascension, retaining an academy while dispersing its people to establish schools and spread Sage Dao teachings. Zhang Yang supported this effort by organizing academies, arranging public lectures, and later providing block-printing and movable-type printing techniques. 913 735 985
Over time, the Sage Dao developed disciples, Gentlemen, Worthies, and eventually Sage-Worthies. Kong Xiuping became the first documented Sage-Worthy after writing his Benevolence Discourse, greatly advancing his father’s Dao. 1332
Expansion beyond the Immortal Cultivation Realm
The Sage Master later realized that his own rules had become shackles: he had limited himself to one realm despite being capable of comprehending the Rules of many. He reformed his thinking, retrieved his Disciplinary Ruler, and began traveling through the Monster, Demon, Ghost, and other realms to understand their distinct Rules. 1642 1644
This understanding led him toward the Emperor Realm. After comprehending the relationship between boundaries, enlightenment, and the Void, he broke through in seclusion; his advancement caused heaven and earth itself to grow stronger. 1694 1754
Personality
The Sage Master is dignified, scholarly, and deeply concerned with reputation. He is initially cautious around Zhang Yang—especially after his words are repeatedly reinterpreted in public—and refuses to be photographed or answer questions without scrutiny. 346 388
He can be politically calculating when Langya Sacred Land’s interests are at stake, including using Kong Xiuping’s marriage proposal to seek advantages from Azure Cloud Sect. However, he is unusually receptive to criticism and genuinely changes his understanding when Zhang Yang exposes flaws in his theories. 354 555
His greatest trait is adaptability. He moves from treating the Sage Dao as a personal theory to seeing it as a path that must serve living beings, accommodate different realms, and continually reform itself. His failed attempts at mediation teach him that rules require both legitimacy and practical enforcement. 952 1644

The Sage Master outlined these ranks during his public Sage Dao discourse. 912
Sage Words and Rule Arts
The Sage Master writes or speaks principles backed by Vast Righteous Qi and the authority of the Sage Dao, turning moral or social rules into binding power. 912 913
- Suppressing Character Art — establishes a rule and suppresses anything exceeding it. 556
- Character-Breaking Art and Binding Character Art — among the Sage Words arts he teaches without reservation. 912
- Hear No Evil — used to prevent disorder. 1311
- “Speak Not of What Is Improper!” — prevented the Flying Eagle Monster Emperor from speaking. 1727

Thirteen Killings
A Sage Art designed to kill those who bring catastrophic harm to heaven, earth, or living beings. The technique uses Sage Dao authority to treat its targets as violators of fundamental laws. 912 913
- Targets include those who cause calamity among the people, throw heaven and earth into chaos, or invert yin and yang. 912
- It is not indiscriminate: those outside its defined categories are not naturally restrained by it. 913
Rule Comprehension and Realm Traversal
After breaking his self-imposed limitations, the Sage Master learned to enter other realms by understanding and conforming to their Rules. 1642 1644
- Comprehended the Rules of at least five realms, including the Ghost Realm. 1726
- Can travel between realms “following his heart’s desires without overstepping the Rules.” 1642 1644
- Stabilized the four Ghost Emperors’ newly advanced realms by leaving them a written “ghost” character infused with Sage Dao insight. 1726
Emperor Realm Rule Manipulation
After reaching the Emperor Realm, he can use the Rules of heaven and earth on an immense scale. 1754 1755
- Can direct heaven and earth to produce Void-derived spatial materials. 1755
- Can replenish resources with precision by identifying what heaven and earth lacks. 1755
- Is regarded as a crucial source of support for strengthening heaven and earth and preparing for conflict Beyond Heaven. 1813 1827
Equipment / Weapons / Items
- Disciplinary Ruler — his natal magic treasure, empowered by Vast Righteous Qi and used to wield Sage Dao rules. He left it at Sage Academy to guard the Sage Dao before traveling to other realms. 1642 1828
- Dao Origin Stone — gifted by Zhang Yang to stabilize the Sage Dao and strengthen the Sage Words Art. 913
- Dragon-Pointing Brush — a brush he had used for hundreds of years; Zhang Yang publicly portrayed it as a gift from the Sage Master in the Azure Cloud Gazette. 347

- Azure Cloud Master — Allied sect leader and fellow Tribulation Realm cultivator. Their alliance begins from mutual necessity and develops into cooperation against threats such as Ming Ye and the Ghost Realm. 358 430
- Kong Xiuping — His son. The Sage Master pushes him to overcome pride, initially seeks a marriage alliance for him, and later takes pride when he becomes Sage-Worthy. 358 1332
- Kong Jingyi — His daughter, who is stunned and proud when he reaches the Emperor Realm. 1754
- Yang Jiao — His disciple, formerly an Otherworld expert. The Sage Master challenges Yang Jiao’s proposed doctrines and guides him to correct flaws in his path. 1494 1583

“As long as this old man conforms to the rules of the various realms, the world will have no borders for me.” 1642
Trivia
- Zhang Yang’s edited Sage Master Interview transformed the Sage Master’s ambiguous remarks into public endorsements of Azure Cloud Sect, earning him widespread praise he did not intend to receive. 347
- He is notably weaker in straightforward combat than the sword-cultivating Temple Master, but compensates with exceptional rule-based suppression and Dao authority. 388 1727
- A book titled Legend of the Sage Master, detailing his past adventures with a “witch,” embarrasses him enough that he avoids reading it. 1327
