Background / History
Arlong Park served as the base established by Arlong and the Arlong Pirates after they occupied the island. Human residents were driven away, while surrounding villages were subjected to the crew’s brutal territorial rule and poverty 6 27.
The park was central to Arlong’s exploitation of Nami. After recognizing her talent for drawing nautical charts, Arlong forced her to work as his cartographer and promised to sell Cocoyasi Village’s freedom for 100 million Beli—a promise tied to keeping her bound to him 6.
Three years before Luffy’s planned departure, Li Mingyuan targeted Arlong Park specifically to defeat Arlong and recruit Nami. He reached the island after surviving an Arlong Pirates attack on a cargo ship and defeating officers Chew and Kuroobi 6 18 23 26.
Layout and Features
Arlong Park was a fortified coastal compound built in sharp contrast to the impoverished villages around it 27.
- Tall, jagged walls enclosed the grounds. 27
- A large, lavish central building functioned as the crew’s main structure. 27
- The grounds contained lounge tables, chairs, parasols, and lavish food arrangements used by the Fish-Men during their celebrations. 27
- A harbor and sea entrance connected the park directly to the ocean, allowing Fish-Men to enter or escape through the water. 27 34
- The main building contained Nami’s sea-chart workspace; charts were scattered from its rooms when Arlong was blasted through the structure. 34
- Despite the destruction caused by the battle, its facilities still included usable washing rooms and clean clothing afterward. 38
Fall of Arlong Park
Li Mingyuan and Carina entered Arlong Park openly, becoming the first known human visitors unrelated to the Arlong Pirates in an unknown number of years 27. Li immediately killed the gate guard, attacked the gathered Fish-Men, and struck the main building hard enough to create a massive explosion and draw out Arlong 27.
The assault rapidly reduced the crew’s fighting force. Hachi was defeated and later fatally wounded, while the remaining grunts were killed during the fighting; Li Mingyuan ultimately told Arlong that he was the last Fish-Man left in the park 29 30 32 33.
Arlong attempted to use the park’s sea entrance to shift the battle underwater, believing Li Mingyuan to be a Devil Fruit user. Li anticipated the ambush and decapitated him with Flash Slash as Arlong burst from the water 34 35. Nami subsequently brought news of Arlong’s defeat to the nearby villages, using Arlong’s head as proof 37 40.
Afterward, Cocoyasi’s residents visited the ruined compound. Though satisfied that their oppression had ended, many were disturbed by the scale and brutality of the destruction 40. Nami and Carina searched the park’s remaining treasure and recovered roughly 18 million Beli 40 44.
