Ch. 41Teacher
Summary of the Chapter
1. Key Plot Points & Events
- Leon (Doctor Lister) and Coulson finalize a cooperation agreement: Leon will teach S.H.I.E.L.D. agents his magical/martial arts skills.
- Leon dismissively explains his abilities as sheer talent, implying ordinary people can’t replicate them; S.H.I.E.L.D. is free to try research on its own.
- Leon receives a phone from S.H.I.E.L.D. and exchanges contact info; both sides tacitly ignore the fact S.H.I.E.L.D. likely knows his true identity.
- The next night, Leon arrives at a specially prepared S.H.I.E.L.D. training facility, which he dislikes the name of.
- He enters the “classroom” dressed eccentrically (mask, sunglasses, carrying books and a pointer) to teach a small group of selected agents.
- Trainees include Hawkeye, Crossbones (Rumlow), Agent Barbara, Sharon Carter, and the Hydra sleeper agent Sitwell.
- Leon uses his “Source of Fear” ability to intimidate the class, frightening Crossbones and making Sitwell fall out of his chair.
- He briefly begins class, accidentally pulls out the wrong books, and claims his “knowledge got mixed up.”
2. Character Developments
- Leon is eccentric, theatrical, and arrogant but clearly powerful; he enjoys playing the “mad genius” and subtly warns S.H.I.E.L.D. that his abilities aren’t easily copied.
- Coulson is pragmatic, trying to pry information from Leon and managing the cooperation despite Leon’s nonsense.
- Trainees initially show impatience/disdain, but Leon’s intimidation quickly forces them into a more submissive, school-like posture.
- Sitwell is marked by Leon as an unassuming but cowardly Hydra agent, despite his loyal S.H.I.E.L.D. facade.
3. Significant Themes
- True talent vs. “cheats”: Leon implies his power is innate, not teachable — undermining S.H.I.E.L.D.’s hopes of mass replication.
- Hidden identities/surveillance: Cameras watch everything; Sitwell and Crossbones are covert Hydra members under S.H.I.E.L.D.’s nose.
- Authority & absurdity: Leon subverts the teacher-student dynamic with bizarre behavior and supernatural fear, showing power can be both comical and terrifying.
4. Character Interactions
- Leon & Coulson: A vaguely adversarial, mutually respectful negotiation; Coulson keeps probing, Leon keeps deflecting with jokes and boasts.
- Leon & S.H.I.E.L.D. staff: Leon makes a playful remark to a technician, who is left confused.
- Leon & trainees: He treats them like problem students, openly mocking them internally while establishing dominance through intimidation.
- Trainee reactions: Hawkeye and Crossbones are embarrassed at being cowed; Sitwell literally falls over; Barbara feels unfairly targeted.
