Background / History
Gu Yuan belonged to the same generation as Xiao Xuan and Hun Tiandi. He acknowledged that Xiao Xuan had surpassed both him and Hun Tiandi, while the Gu Clan and Xiao Clan maintained a reasonably good relationship during that era. After Xiao Xuan failed to reach Dou Di and the path ahead appeared severed, Gu Yuan ceased treating Hun Tiandi's ambitions as an existential threat and focused on the Gu Clan's continuation. 310
For roughly a thousand years, Gu Yuan remained at the continent's peak as a Peak Nine-Star Dou Sheng. His principal hope was to cultivate successors strong enough to protect the Gu Clan before his Meditation Death. 310
He secretly nurtured a Fire Spirit within the Gu Clan's inherited Golden Emperor Sky Burning Flame for nearly two centuries. Because the spirit contained both the flame's origin and Gu Yuan's essence blood, Gu Yuan expected it to possess talent comparable to his own. 310
Gu Yuan's outlook changed after Zhao Li emerged as a powerhouse no weaker than himself. He ordered Gu Clan members not to offend Zhao Li, fearing that Zhao Li might otherwise join Hun Tiandi against the Gu Clan. 310
Appearance
Gu Yuan is a middle-aged man who commonly carries himself with calm composure and authority. When he entered a crowded public gathering in Great Li, people instinctively made way for him. 314
- Usually stands with his hands behind his back. 310
- Possesses a restrained but overwhelming presence capable of intimidating powerful cultivators. 367
- His demeanor can shift sharply from gentle and polite to cold fury when his daughter is threatened. 335
Personality
Gu Yuan initially appears composed, courteous, and somewhat detached from worldly struggles. Zhao Li's first impression was of a fundamentally decent but naïve man who focused on surface-level solutions and had not experienced genuine hardship. 298
Despite this outward purity, Gu Yuan is capable of careful long-term planning. He concealed the Fire Spirit's existence, investigated threats around Xun'er, used Xun'er's supposed death to mislead the Soul Clan, and later hid her accelerated development from the Gu Clan itself. 310 336 344
His greatest priority is the Gu Clan's future, particularly Xun'er's safety and potential. The attack on Xun'er exposed a far more ruthless side: he personally killed Hun Tiansheng and the Soul Clan infiltrator posing as Gu Feng. 336
Zhao Li's rise rekindled Gu Yuan's ambition. Having once accepted Peak Nine-Star Dou Sheng as the limit of cultivation, he began pursuing the possibility of becoming a Dou Di—and eventually a path beyond it. 434 446

Story Role / Major Arcs
Fire Spirit and Zhao Li's Emergence
Gu Yuan monitored the Fire Spirit's development in the Ancient Realm while reassessing the Gu Clan's position after Zhao Li's emergence. Gu Shu's report of a possible Ninth Grade Golden Pill convinced Gu Yuan that Zhao Li required personal attention rather than distant observation. 310 311
Negotiations with Zhao Li
Gu Yuan personally met Zhao Li in Great Li, where he developed respect for Zhao Li's effort to transmit Dharma among ordinary people. He sought Ninth Grade Golden Pills from Zhao Li but became guarded when Zhao Li hinted at wanting a Heavenly Flame, fearing the Fire Spirit's existence had been discovered. 314 315 316
Xun'er's Crisis and Soul Clan Retaliation
When Xun'er was nearly killed through a Soul Clan plot, Gu Yuan used a Nirvana Pill to save her, exposed the impostor Gu Feng, killed Hun Tiansheng, and faked Xun'er's death to turn the situation against the Soul Clan. 335 336
He then infiltrated the Soul Hall while disguising himself as a One-Star Dou Sheng. Although he initially dominated the defenders, Hun Tiandi discovered him, forcing Gu Yuan to recognize that the Soul Clan was much stronger than he had believed. 338
Entrusting Xun'er to the Xiao Family
Gu Yuan brought Xun'er to the Xiao Family in Wutan City and asked Xiao Zhan to raise her temporarily. Before leaving, he investigated the surrounding region, coerced powerful Magical Beasts into life-and-death contracts, and evaluated regional forces that might protect her. 342 343
He continued to visit Xun'er and deliver resources, observing her exceptional growth. Upon one such visit, he sensed Yao Chen's residual soul power around Xiao Yan but failed to uncover the soul body's identity. 366 367
Pursuit of the Dou Di Realm
After reaching the Half-Emperor realm, Gu Yuan sought Zhao Li's knowledge of the path to Dou Di. Zhao Li's display of Origin Qi confirmed the energy Gu Yuan had lacked and reignited his desire to advance. 434
Gu Yuan subsequently agreed to support Zhao Li's plan to spread cultivation methods across the continent. Zhao Li's influence transformed Gu Yuan from a complacent guardian of the Gu Clan into an ambitious participant in the continent's changing era. 435 446
The New Era
Gu Yuan became one of the beneficiaries of Zhao Li's reforms, reaching the Dou Di realm ahead of others. He chose to exploit the new order by moving against the Eight Clans, beginning with the Soul Clan. 447
Over a decade later, Gu Yuan was one of five powerful figures who gathered to unlock the Heavenly Evolution Grand Formation. 466
Trivia
- Gu Yuan was not the Gu Clan's eldest or most senior member; Gu Shu belonged to an older generation, though Gu Yuan's superior strength made him clan leader. 310
- His initial confidence that Hun Tiandi could never become a Dou Di stemmed from his belief that the path to Dou Di had been permanently severed. 310
- Zhao Li's assessment of Gu Yuan changed repeatedly: from naïve and pure, to a hidden schemer, to a figure worth treating cautiously. 298 345
