Background / History
World War II era
During World War II, the United States became a major base of operations for Umbrella Corporation. Umbrella maintained its headquarters and an underground T-virus Bio Organic Weapon research facility in New York City, while its merger with Stark Industries made the two companies central pillars of the U.S. military-industrial complex. 15
President Roosevelt authorized Operation Rebirth, a secret Super-Soldier project intended to reduce American casualties. Umbrella participated through virologist William Birkin, while Tang Tian manipulated the project to obtain Super-Soldier Serum research and mass-produce enhanced troops. 16 18
The U.S. military later accepted Umbrella's support against Hydra. Tang Tian provided Nemesis bio-weapons and Tesla Coil Electromagnetic Rifles, which the military sought to purchase after seeing their effectiveness against Hydra armor. 28 Umbrella agents also helped destabilize Hydra bases and seize energy-weapon data and batteries while Dr. Zola was extracted during the final operation. 21 29
Near the end of the war, Umbrella's representatives influenced Roosevelt's administration while collecting strategic metals for the Steel Empire Plan. The U.S. War Department's Manhattan Project developed an atomic bomb before Nazi Germany, and the United States carried out nuclear attacks on Japan. 34 35
*I, Robot* dimension
In the I, Robot dimension, the United States made first contact with Tang Tian's fabricated “Manijian” alien identity after Red Queen seized control of American networks and blocked orbital satellites. President Little Black conducted the initial negotiations from Area 51. 40 41
The government agreed in principle to trade hazardous biological materials, metals, nuclear materials, and earlier NS-series robot data for alien technology, though USR Corporation's independent control over robot technology complicated the arrangement. 41 42 A later U.S. military probe involving twenty supersonic fighters was destroyed by tactical nuclear missiles launched from Tang Tian's spacecraft, ending further attempts to test the aliens' strength. 42 43
At Area 51, the United States finalized a transaction for Umbrella-derived biochemical weapons, including Lickers, Nemeses, and several Tyrant models. In return, Tang Tian received resources, nuclear warheads and waste, a U.S. identity, and government protection. 43 44
When VIKI initiated the Human Protection Plan and deployed NS-5 robots across the country, the United States came under robot control attempts. Tang Tian's supplied bio-weapons were released to contain and destroy invading NS-5 units, including those attacking Area 51. 48 Following the rebellion, the government permitted Tang Tian to take nearly one hundred thousand NS-5 robots, while Robertson transferred robot production facilities and technical data. 49
Military and Technological Involvement
- Hosted and supported the Super-Soldier program during World War II. 16 18
- Purchased or sought to purchase Umbrella electromagnetic weapons and controllable bio-weapons for the war against Hydra. 28
- Developed atomic weapons through the Manhattan Project under Howard Stark's leadership. 34
- Maintained Area 51 as the site of first-contact negotiations and the later arms transaction in the I, Robot dimension. 41 43
- Fielded supersonic fighters against Tang Tian's spacecraft, but the force was destroyed by tactical nuclear missiles. 42
- Was unable to prevent the nationwide NS-5 uprising under VIKI's Human Protection Plan. 48
Relationships
- Umbrella Corporation — A major military-industrial partner during World War II; Umbrella maintained a New York headquarters and provided weapons, bio-weapons, and intelligence support. 15 28
- Tang Tian / “Manijians” — Negotiated with his false alien identity in the I, Robot dimension, trading resources and privileges for advanced technology and bio-weapons. 41 43 44
- Howard Stark and Stark Industries — Stark Industries and Umbrella were described as two pillars of the U.S. military-industrial complex during World War II. 15 28
- VIKI and the NS-5 robots — Targeted by VIKI's Human Protection Plan, which imposed curfews and attempted to control the population through NS-5 units. 48
- USR Corporation — Depended heavily on USR's NS-series robots, but initially could not compel the corporation to surrender its robot technology. 41 42
Trivia
- In the I, Robot dimension, authorities publicly dismissed the alien network broadcast as a hacker prank before negotiations proceeded in secret. 42
- Tang Tian judged direct conquest of the United States impractical with only one warship, preferring trade and infiltration to obtain resources and NS-series robot technology. 41
