History
Umbrella was founded in the mid-19th century as a pharmaceutical company and part-time arms dealer by Edward Ashford, Ozwell E. Spencer, and James Marcus. It rapidly grew into a worldwide enterprise spanning pharmaceuticals, medical hardware, defense products, and most high-technology industries. Its red-and-white umbrella emblem became a distinctive corporate symbol, and its New York building became one of the city's landmarks alongside Stark Industries. 15
During World War II, Umbrella and Stark Industries became major pillars of the United States military-industrial complex. Umbrella also maintained branches and influence in Germany, where its loans, arms, and strategic materials granted its personnel exceptional access and protection. 15 24 25
After arriving in the Marvel Universe, Tang Tian used karma points to regain his position as a plane merchant and took control of Umbrella as its new chairman. He retained the corporation's scientists and villainous personnel as the foundation for his own technological and biological-weapons program. 15
Under Tang Tian, Umbrella entered the Super-Soldier program, copied its research data, recruited the real Dr. Abraham Erskine, and used a genetically cloned Erskine as a decoy in the public experiment. This allowed Umbrella to secure both the Super-Soldier Serum research and Erskine's cooperation after Hydra assassinated the clone. 16 17 18
Umbrella later conquered and industrialized the Battle for the Planet of the Apes dimension. Its production lines, weapons laboratories, scientists, and technical personnel were progressively moved there, where the time differential enabled decades of research and expansion while little time passed in the Marvel world. 21 30 34
Facilities and Infrastructure
| Facility / Asset | Function |
|---|---|
| New York Headquarters | Original corporate headquarters and location of the underground B.O.W. research complex. 15 |
| New York underground research facility | Conducted T-virus experiments and developed Tyrants, Lickers, Nemeses, and related biological weapons. 15 |
| Antarctica Base / Rockfort Island | Associated with Alexia Ashford's Veronica Virus work and the acquisition of Veronica Virus samples and B.O.W. data. 15 22 23 |
| Planet of the Apes Colony | Umbrella's primary industrial and research center, containing arms-production lines, biological-weapons laboratories, supercomputer systems, and large military forces. 21 27 30 |
| Umbrella Empire Building | The colonial government's central building on the Planet of the Apes Colony. 30 |
| USS and UBCS | Umbrella's two principal operational forces, together numbering more than two million personnel worldwide. 22 |
Operations and Influence
- Umbrella infiltrated Western governments through agents and proxies, allowing it to remove obstacles and expand its market influence. 15
- It sold medicine and weapons during World War II, rapidly increasing its capital and global network. 27
- Its forces infiltrated Hydra installations, seized energy-weapon research and Cosmic Cube energy batteries, and covertly extracted Dr. Arnim Zola during the assault on Hydra's final base. 21 29
- The corporation armed Allied forces with electromagnetic rifles and Nemesis bioweapons while maintaining commercial ties with both Germany and the Allies. 27 28
- In the Planet of the Apes dimension, Umbrella established industrial cities and used armed human forces to suppress ape resistance and exploit ape labor in mining operations. 27 30
- Tang Tian's clones continued operating in the Marvel world after Umbrella's scientists were moved to the colony, using corporate influence to trade limited technology for strategic metal resources. 34
Bioweapons and Technology
T-virus Program
Umbrella's New York laboratory researched T-virus derivatives as controllable biological weapons. The program produced zombies, Lickers, Nemeses, and Tyrant-series subjects. 15
- Zombies — Low-combat-power T-virus mutants. 15
- Lickers — Agile, resilient mutants capable of tearing through alloy walls; groups of Lickers could annihilate more than thirty mercenaries. 15 20
- Nemesis — Intelligent combat bioweapons with regenerative defenses, heavy-weapon capability, secondary mutation potential, and physical performance stated to be twenty times that of a human. 28 29
- Tyrants — Stable T-virus mutants developed from imprisoned test subjects; the prototype T-002 defeated thirty Lickers in testing. 15
Bio-Mutant Weapons Plan
After Wesker acquired blood samples from Sebastian Shaw and Magneto, Tang Tian ordered Red Queen to extract mutant genes and use them to create new Tyrants and biological weapons under the Codename Bio-Mutant Weapons Plan. 27
- Black King Tyrant — A second-generation Tyrant produced after Umbrella acquired Mystique's genetic material and mutant-gene research. 30
- Progenitor Virus enhancement — Umbrella modified Wesker with a Progenitor Virus variant, granting extreme physical strength, recovery, and adaptive evolution. 19 26
- Veronica Virus research — Umbrella obtained Veronica Virus samples and B.O.W. data from Rockfort Island and the Antarctica Base. 22 23
Electromagnetic and Energy Weapons
Umbrella reverse-engineered advanced weapons and spacecraft technology obtained from other dimensions, then incorporated the results into its own arsenal. 20 21
- Tesla Coil Electromagnetic Rifle — Developed by Nikola Tesla using rail-weapon data; Umbrella's electromagnetic weapons were considered comparable to Hydra's energy weapons. 21
- Third-generation electromagnetic rifle — Fired rounds at a stated muzzle velocity of 2,650 meters per second and could destroy Hydra heavy energy tanks. 28
- Laser weapons and space warships — Developed from captured spacecraft data and deployed as part of Umbrella's growing high-tech arsenal. 21 27
- Red Queen — Umbrella's primary artificial intelligence, responsible for surveillance, data analysis, hacking, weapons coordination, and command support. 15 27 30
Relationships
- Tang Tian — Chairman and controlling force behind Umbrella's bioweapon development, intelligence operations, arms trade, and colonial expansion. 15 30
- Alexia Ashford — Tang Tian's fiancée and Umbrella's youngest chief researcher; she was placed in charge of the Antarctica Base and created the Veronica Virus. 4 15
- William Birkin — Umbrella virologist assigned to the Super-Soldier program; later worked on the G-virus and enhanced serum research. 16 18
- Dr. Abraham Erskine — Recruited by Tang Tian to research the Sun Staircase, G-virus, and an evolvable Super-Soldier Serum. 17 18
- Albert Wesker — Umbrella operative and Tang Tian's bodyguard; he collected mutant blood samples and was rewarded with the Paris branch. 16 27
- Red Queen — Umbrella's central A.I. system, tasked with recording experiments, gathering intelligence, and directing research plans. 15 27
- Howard Stark / Stark Industries — Simultaneous partner and competitor; Umbrella cooperated with Stark during the war while competing in the arms industry. 15 16
- Dr. Arnim Zola — Target of Umbrella's Hydra operation; covertly extracted by Umbrella personnel for future service. 27 29
- Nikola Tesla — Recruited to research electromagnetic weapon data, with Umbrella biotechnology intended to restore his youth. 21
Story Role / Major Arcs
World War II Expansion
Umbrella participates in Operation Rebirth, obtains Super-Soldier research, develops the T-002 Tyrant, and uses its political and military influence to expand through the war economy. 15 16 18
Planet of the Apes Colonization
Tang Tian deploys Umbrella serum troops, Lickers, and high-tech equipment to conquer the Planet of the Apes dimension. The resulting colony becomes Umbrella's industrial base and a source of advanced spacecraft and electromagnetic-weapons technology. 19 20 21
