Eriri first met Lin Xiao as a child when her mother, Sayuri Sawamura, brought her to the orphanage where he lived. Fascinated by his intelligence and melancholy—he was solving advanced calculus in the sand while the other children played—she became attached to him and regarded him as both the smartest person she knew and the person she liked most. 20

Their childhood friendship ended abruptly when eight-year-old Lin announced that an approaching calamity required him to train in the mountains and that he would “stand alone through eternity.” He ran away, leaving Eriri crying and resentful over his disappearance for the next ten years. 20

Eriri transfers into Sōbu High School's Class 2-F and is seated beside Lin. Her polished introduction as an elegant, wealthy young lady immediately collapses when she recognizes him; she publicly calls back to his childhood declaration and confronts him with a mixture of anger, joy, and grievance. 20

Eriri travels to Mitakihara City with the club, accepts Kyubey's magical-girl contract after being tempted by the customizable costume system, and joins the group's combat drill against Lin's self-styled Demon King. 88 89 91

Her paint attack fails to hurt him, and she protests both his overwhelming defense and Miko's immediate surrender. When Lin later pretends to fall to Madoka's ordinary light arrow, Eriri and Kyoko Sakura angrily criticize his obvious favoritism and unconvincing acting. 91 92

Public Monster Incident

When a Black-Winged Great Tengu attacks Sōbu High, Eriri refuses to transform publicly because she fears the damage it would do to her elegant school image. 184
