Background

Dumbledore is introduced as Hogwarts’ white-bearded headmaster during the period of Voldemort’s return. Hagrid brings him reports of a supposed Muggle, Li Zu, defeating a Peruvian Vipertooth barehanded; Dumbledore elects to investigate the anomaly personally rather than treat him as an immediate enemy 407.

At Ollivanders, Dumbledore identifies an ancient curse on Li Zu. Unable to remove it completely, he seals it into an eye-shaped formation on Li Zu’s shoulder and explains that it attracts vulnerable creatures seeking aid as well as predators drawn to the same “sweet” presence 408.
