Background / History

The Wen Household attained its standing through the efforts of multiple generations, beginning with Wen Chengze’s grandfather. Though considered a first-rate wealthy family, its rise and continued position were closely tied to support from the Zhong Household. This affiliation leaves the family subordinate to the Zhongs despite its outward prosperity and influence 3 4.

Wen Chenglin’s entry into the family company helped accelerate the household’s rise in recent years. Father Wen recognized changing circumstances, while Chenglin brought ambition and ability to the business, making the family well known among the attendees of the Zhong Household’s gathering 9.

When Zhong Mohan succeeds Old Master Zhong as head of the Zhong Household, the dependent families begin considering factions and independence. The Wen Household cannot safely remain neutral: its assets and status make it valuable to both Zhong Mohan and rival interests, while its connection to the Zhongs also makes it a potential target 4.

Zhong Household Succession Crisis

Wen Chengze returns after nearly a decade abroad because the household faces an unstable political situation. With Zhong Mohan’s appointment as the new Zhong head, affiliated families begin probing for weakness and forming potential factions. Father Wen and Wen Chenglin reveal that the family’s holdings prevent them from simply withdrawing 2 3 4.

At the Zhong Household banquet, the family avoids appearing overly eager to support Zhong Mohan. Father Wen, Wen Chenglin, and Wen Chengze instead maintain a reserved, mutually understood position: avoid needless conflict while staying away from the center of the power struggle 9 10.

Partnership with Zhong Mohan

After the banquet incident involving Wen Chengze, Zhong Mohan visits the Wen residence. Father Wen and Wen Chenglin attempt to keep him away from the ill Wen Chengze, but Zhong Mohan presses Father Wen into a business arrangement through threats and negotiation 14 15.

The family later learns that its agreement is directly with Zhong Mohan rather than the Zhong Household as a whole. Father Wen judges Zhong Mohan the only figure capable of handling the household’s internal turmoil, even though the partnership makes the Wens more vulnerable to hostile outside forces 21.

Entertainment-Industry Cover

To make the Wen Household appear less threatening, Wen Chengze proposes entering the entertainment industry and cultivating the image of a spoiled, troublesome young master. The plan is intended to suggest that Father Wen and Wen Chenglin must divert attention from business to manage him, reducing outside suspicion of the family’s strength 21 24.

Mother Wen initially opposes the decision out of concern for her son, but relents after Wen Chengze appeals to her. The household supports his signing with Phoenix Dynasty Entertainment, trusting the Cheng Household to help protect him in an unfamiliar industry 22.

Protection of Wen Chengze

The household repeatedly responds strongly to Wen Chengze’s wellbeing. Father Wen and Wen Chenglin investigate after he leaves the Zhong banquet in distress, while Mother Wen remains anxious over his fever and his subsequent overnight absence 13 14 34.

Although Wen Chengze asks not to be treated like a “porcelain doll,” Wen Chenglin promises that he, Father Wen, and Mother Wen will support him whenever needed. The family respects his wish to handle conflicts himself unless he asks for intervention 34 43.
