Background

Dormammu was originally a mage from another world. After discovering the Dark Dimension and its immense power, he abandoned his physical body and merged with the dimension itself, becoming an ageless, immortal being of energy whose existence is tied to that realm. 33

As ruler of the Dark Dimension, Dormammu repeatedly sought to invade Earth and absorb it into his domain. The Ancient One and Kamar-Taj resisted him for more than two thousand years, but could not permanently drive him away. 13 16

Appearance

Dormammu can manifest as a large humanoid figure with a skeletal face engulfed in purple flames. 33

Personality

His confidence collapses when the Dark Dimension itself is threatened. During his battle with Chen Xu, he abandoned his pride, pleaded for the destruction to stop, and surrendered the captured souls of the Ancient One and the Temple Mages to preserve his realm. 33 34

Initial Incursions

Dormammu is identified as the ruler of the Dark Dimension when the realm approaches and causes a spatial disturbance. He later attempts to invade through the New York Sanctum, but the Ancient One's seal limits the power he can mobilize and the Sanctum mages repel him. 7 10

After learning that Chen Xu may become a future threat, Dormammu orders his follower Erbi Mengbilia to eliminate him. 10

Temple Mage Assessment

Dormammu isolates Chen Xu in the Dark Dimension during his assessment and attacks through a mirror-image avatar. Chen Xu withstands the avatar's dark-energy attack with Chaos Magic and God's Hand, then shatters the avatar with a black-red fireball. 15 16

Possession of the Ancient One

While Chen Xu temporarily serves as Sorcerer Supreme, Dormammu launches daily attacks against the Sanctum's seals. He later possesses the Ancient One and uses controlled Temple Mages in an attempt to break the seals through the souls of the Ancient One, Mordo, and Chen Xu. 29 30 31

Chen Xu expels Dormammu from the Ancient One's body with the Phoenix Force, prompting Dormammu to retreat to the Dark Dimension. 32

Defeat in the Dark Dimension

Chen Xu enters the Dark Dimension, destroys its dark creatures, and defeats Dormammu's four dark lords. Dormammu confronts him in the Dark Sanctum and draws upon the whole dimension's power, but their clash begins destabilizing the realm. 32 33

Fearing the destruction of the Dark Dimension, Dormammu releases the souls of the Ancient One and the Temple Mages. He also agrees not to invade Earth again in exchange for Chen Xu leaving his realm. 34

Aftermath

Dormammu ceases his invasions of Earth following the agreement. He remains in the Dark Dimension and is later unable to prevent Cyttorak from entering and leaving it freely. 35 50
