Background

Before becoming Lohr's assistant, Kateya represented the Earth-Fire School at the Wizard Tower entrance, handling registration and reporting duties for twenty Contribution Points per month. Her mentor, Fray Ibet, had assigned her the position because it was safe and leisurely. She had previously shared crowded housing with other apprentices; several of those companions died while constructing their meditation methods, while others abandoned the wizard's path. 16 17

Kateya first met Lohr when Wizard Mara brought him to the Earth-Fire Wizard Tower. As a Third-Level Apprentice, she was assigned to escort him inside. She was immediately impressed by his survival of the Temple Knight attack and his unusually rapid progress, though Lohr discouraged her formal treatment of him. 15

After Lohr chose the relatively weak Earth-Fire School, Kateya guided him through the tower, explaining its contribution-point economy, apprentice facilities, spell libraries, and laboratory requirements. Initially disappointed that Lohr showed no romantic interest in her, she accepted Fray's advice to seek a practical role beside him instead. 16

She is intensely admiring of Lohr's talent and becomes increasingly convinced that his achievements will alter her future. Although she initially doubts that he can meaningfully optimize spells or create a new spell model, she repeatedly chooses to trust him after seeing his results. 18 19 21
