Power Progression

Sukuna’s progression primarily involves recovering finger-based power, changing vessels, and restoring his original body. Later challenges revisit different timelines rather than continuing a single uninterrupted sequence 369 383 447.

Background / History

Sukuna lived during the Heian-kyo era, when jujutsu society was at its height. Akuta attributes his unusual body and early accumulation of power to devouring his twin before birth. His brother’s soul survived and eventually reincarnated as Wasuke Itadori, making Sukuna Yuji’s great-uncle under the family history Akuta describes 13 166.

During the Heian era, Sukuna wielded Kamutoke and Hiten against major sorcerer forces. He annihilated the Northern Fujiwara forces’ Sun, Moon, and Stars Squad and Five Void Generals, and repelled the Neshi Pacification Squad and Sugawara remnants 201.

His power persists through twenty fingers. Kenjaku engineered Yuji’s birth by possessing his mother, creating a vessel capable of suppressing Sukuna. Although Yuji normally controls their shared body, Sukuna used it to kill numerous civilians in Shibuya 12 13 54.

Appearance

• Possessed vessels: Black facial markings and a markedly more sinister presence distinguish Sukuna’s control from the host’s normal appearance 14 442.
• Partial manifestation: Can grow a speaking mouth on Yuji’s neck or hand without taking full control 13 14.
• Original body: Has four arms, four eyes, and an additional mouth on his abdomen. Earlier descriptions also identify two faces as a defining feature 13 167 197.
• Yorozu’s armor: During the Tokyo battle, wears pitch-black metal protection with long claws and metal-covered teeth, giving him a demonic silhouette 67.

Personality

Sukuna is proud, contemptuous, and acutely sensitive to being treated as insignificant. He initially dismisses Kashimo as unworthy of his attention while considering Gojo the one modern sorcerer worth confronting. Jie Jian’s jokes and casual interruptions repeatedly anger him because they undermine the fear his reputation normally inspires 13 155 159 229.

His arrogance does not prevent calculated fighting. He feigns vulnerability, exploits binding-vow loopholes, uses emotional devastation to improve possession prospects, and studies unfamiliar techniques during combat. He can also acknowledge worthy opposition: against Jie Jian, he becomes increasingly exhilarated despite losing ground 16 62 163 171 443.

Sukuna shows more patience toward Uraume than toward most others, forgiving delays and imperfect preparations. That consideration does not extend to Yorozu’s romantic devotion, which he treats as a useful resource rather than reciprocated affection 16 50 68.

Cursed Energy and Close Combat

Sukuna combines enormous cursed-energy reserves with elite physical strength and fighting technique 18 483.

• Remains dangerous during Cursed Technique Burnout, fighting through basic cursed-energy manipulation alone 66 71.

Sukuna’s principal attacks range from repeatable ranged cuts to contact-enhanced and spatial slashes 41 197.

• Dismantle: A basic slash that can be used repeatedly without additional restrictions. It is less effective against particularly powerful opponents 41.
• Slash: Eightfold: A stronger slash enhanced by a binding vow requiring physical contact with the target 41.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Escape into Akuta

Kashimo’s threat to kill Yuji forces Sukuna to act. Unable to safely seize Kashimo and uncertain whether Choso could suppress him, Sukuna chooses Akuta as the easiest available vessel. After the transfer, he defeats Kashimo, recovers three fingers from Uraume, and resumes planning to possess Megumi 13 14 15 16.

Tokyo Battle and Yuta’s Victory

Akuta later prevents Sukuna from feeding his finger to Megumi, leaving Sukuna confined to Yuji’s severed pinky. Uraume eventually revives him in another vessel 41 42 50.

The ensuing Tokyo battle forces Sukuna into his original form. He uses Malevolent Shrine, Furnace, and Yorozu’s armor, killing Ryu Ishigori before Jie Jian separates him from Yorozu through Higuruma’s domain. Jie Jian dies interrupting another domain expansion; Yuta subsequently pilots Jie Jian’s repaired body using Kenjaku’s technique and defeats Sukuna with Thunder Breath 59 64 67 68 71.

Purification at the Possession Attempt

In another challenge, Gojo intercepts Sukuna as he attempts to transfer into Megumi. Angel purifies both the transfer finger and the final finger Gojo had hidden, killing Sukuna and completing Jie Jian’s mission 101.

Shinjuku Defeat

Sukuna successfully possesses Megumi and completes the Bath before the planned December 24 duel. Jie Jian confronts him first, eventually forcing out his original body and overcoming his domains, flames, and physical attacks 144 149 150 167 171.

After Jie Jian leaves him severely wounded, Yuji reaches Megumi’s inner world and helps him resist. Five Black Flashes strip Sukuna from the body. Sukuna refuses Yuji’s offer to return to him and disappears, accepting death instead 172.

Defeat by Kasumi Miwa

In Miwa’s challenge, Sukuna’s true form and Spatial Slash threaten Gojo before Miwa later confronts him at the Zenin cursed-tool vault. With Jie Jian’s assistance, she shatters Malevolent Shrine and defeats Sukuna with Black Flash-enhanced sword attacks 197 203 224 226 232.

Rather than dying, Sukuna reaches an agreement with Gojo and returns to Yuji as a cursed object. Gojo later confirms that their arrangement includes a one-on-one fight on December 24 234 235 236.

Grand Sukuna Slayers Challenge

In Maki’s timeline, Sukuna remains trapped within Yuji and has recovered only nine fingers. He uses Enchain to negotiate with Gojo after Uraume’s failed attempt to abduct Yuji, then faces a succession of challengers 442 443 446 447.

Jie Jian’s lightning mark drains Sukuna’s cursed energy, while escalating attacks force him into his original form inside Yuji. Sukuna ultimately admits defeat and returns control to Yuji. Angel purifies the remaining stored fingers, reducing the power available for any future revival 453 460 464.
