Background
Gojo and Suguru Geto were once an undefeated pair whose strength shook Jujutsu Society. Their differing beliefs eventually separated them, and Geto left Jujutsu High. Geto’s subsequent death remained a lasting source of grief for Gojo 72.
Gojo became a teacher to challenge Jujutsu Society’s entrenched patterns and remind sorcerers that they were people, not merely instruments of their profession. His influence extended beyond combat: Maki later cited his willingness to work through institutional rules as a reason for initially taking control of the Zenin Family without a purge 72 405.
His imprisonment in the Prison Realm makes freeing him a major objective for Jujutsu High. Yuji and the others seek Hana Kurusu and Angel because Angel can extinguish cursed techniques and break the seal 15 26 48.
Appearance
- Build: Tall and slender 99 149.
- Hair: White 149.
- Eyes: Azure Six Eyes, usually concealed by a black blindfold or sunglasses 105 149 442.
- Clothing: Wears a black uniform; puts on a coat before leaving for the Shinjuku duel 194 442.
- Female counterpart: A white-haired woman with azure Six Eyes, sunglasses, and a Jujutsu High uniform 466 480.
Personality
Gojo’s confidence shapes both his fighting style and his everyday behavior. He remains composed immediately after leaving the Prison Realm, trusting that he can respond before any attack reaches him. Against Jie Jian, he rejects the safer option of winning through attrition because he wants to defeat his opponent at full strength 99 104.
His casual manner does not diminish his concern for students. He agrees to conceal his return only while they remain safe, directly questions whether Jie Jian’s presence threatens Miwa, and refuses to let Angel destroy Sukuna when doing so would also kill Yuji 100 179 180 464.
His overwhelming strength also isolates him. During his near-death encounter with Geto, Gojo admits that he has long felt distant even from the people closest to him. A sufficiently strong opponent offers him something ordinary companionship cannot: a battle in which he can give everything he has 113 115.
Abilities & Skills
Six Eyes
The Six Eyes provide the perception and extremely precise cursed energy control needed to fully master Limitless 105.
- Identify cursed techniques, locate cursed energy, and assess an opponent’s remaining reserves 105 111.
- Observe distant combat in detail from more than a thousand meters away 153.
- Detect unusual possession states, including Jie Jian’s presence in Miwa and changes associated with Maki’s spirit possession 231 445.
- Support exceptionally efficient cursed energy use; Gojo describes his expenditure during ordinary combat as practically negligible 104.
- Limit: Impaired vision can destabilize his technique control. Oxygen poisoning blurs his Six Eyes and causes Infinite Void to falter 111.
Limitless
Limitless surrounds Gojo with a defensive effect that prevents ordinary attacks from reaching him. During the opening exchanges of his duel with Jie Jian, Gojo lands blows while Jie Jian cannot touch him 104.
- Can be adjusted to filter incoming gases 111.
- Returns as his principal defense once Cursed Technique Burnout ends 106 159.
- Limits: Domain Amplification can neutralize it on contact, while Spatial Slashes can cut through its protection 123 198 199.
- Filtering weakness: Allowing only oxygen through his defense exposes him to oxygen poisoning when Jie Jian supplies an oxygen-rich environment 111 112.
Cursed Technique Lapse: Blue
Blue generates tremendous attraction. Gojo uses it to compress the effective distance between positions, enabling movement approaching teleportation 104.
- Keeps pace with—and can slightly exceed—Jie Jian’s accelerated movement 104.
- Creates an attraction point without hand signs 199.
- Disrupts Sukuna’s attack when Gojo’s hands are restrained by placing an attraction point directly between them 199.
Cursed Technique Reversal: Red
Red releases a powerful repulsive attack 107 197.
- Clears the thunderclouds above the island battlefield with its explosion and shockwave 107.
- Blasts Sukuna through multiple buildings 197.
- Provides a rapid counterattack after Gojo restores his burned-out technique 109.
Hollow Purple
Hollow Purple combines Blue and Red into a destructive offensive technique 196.
- Can be strengthened through chanting 463.
- A planned 200% Hollow Purple uses Ijichi’s concealment, Utahime and Gakuganji’s support, and Gojo’s own incantations 153.
- Opens one Shinjuku battle with a long-range surprise attack 195.
- An unrestricted release colliding with Sukuna’s Spatial Slash flattens central Shinjuku 198.
- Limit: Gojo later reports that even Hollow Purple failed to stop Jie Jian’s Thunder Breath 463 464.
Domain Expansion: Infinite Void
Infinite Void is a closed domain that floods its targets with overwhelming amounts of useless information, disrupting thought and movement 105 158.
- Its strength overwhelms Jie Jian’s Hollow Wicker Basket within moments 105.
- Can crush a substantially weaker domain, as illustrated by Gojo’s battle with Jogo 114.
- Allows Gojo to manually direct its information attack even when a domain clash neutralizes the guaranteed-hit effect 114.
- Its barrier conditions can be altered through Binding Vows or changes to internal and external resistance 108 157.
- Contact exception: Sukuna avoids the information overload by maintaining contact with Gojo 114 158.
- Tactical risk: Sukuna uses Megumi’s soul to bear Mahoraga’s adaptation burden, making repeated deployment dangerous to Megumi 159.
Reverse Cursed Technique
Gojo uses Reverse Cursed Technique to repair severe injuries and sustain himself while his main technique is unavailable 106.
- Regrows an exploded arm during the island duel 106.
- Regenerates both legs after a Spatial Slash misses his cursed energy source 196.
- Accelerates recovery from Cursed Technique Burnout by destroying and healing the relevant brain tissue 107.
- Limits: Repeated brain repair strains his ability to expand a precise domain. Jie Jian estimates an upper limit of five restorations, rather than demonstrating five successful uses during their duel 107.
- Fatal vulnerability: Destruction of the waist’s cursed energy core can prevent recovery; Jie Jian must reverse his own domain’s effect to restore Gojo after severing him there 42 115.
Falling Blossom Emotion
Falling Blossom Emotion repels incoming attacks with cursed energy and serves as Gojo’s defense during technique burnout 106 159.
- Stops Jie Jian’s destructive attack from spreading beyond Gojo’s arm to his shoulder 106.
- Deflects many of Malevolent Shrine’s slashes 159.
- Limit: Dense, sustained attacks can weaken the defense, and some slashes still get through 159.
Equipment & Items
- Black blindfold — His characteristic eye covering; he removes it when deploying Infinite Void during the island duel 105.
- Sunglasses — An alternative covering used by both the adult Gojo and his female counterpart 442 466.
- Sukuna’s final finger — Secretly retained by Gojo in one worldline and later handed over for Angel to purify 101.
- Stored Sukuna fingers — In the Maki-related worldline, he gives Angel the remaining fingers at Jujutsu High while protecting the portion of Sukuna still inside Yuji 464.
Relationships
- Suguru Geto — Closest friend and former partner. Gojo seeks to reclaim his body from Kenjaku and later asks Shoko to arrange his funeral 72 149 441.
- Jie Jian — Liberator, tactical collaborator, and sparring rival. Gojo credits him with Sukuna’s defeat, loses their island duel, and later continues sparring with him 102 115 129 237.
- Yuta Okkotsu — Student whose emotional recovery Gojo supported. Yuta later tries to prevent Gojo’s predicted death; in the Jian Death Era, he also succeeds Gojo as clan head 71 124 190 191.
- Yuji Itadori — Student whose safety remains a priority. Gojo comforts him after a confrontation involving Sukuna and refuses a purification that would kill him 443 464.
- Megumi Fushiguro — Student Gojo intends to rescue from Sukuna. The danger to Megumi’s soul makes him hesitate to deploy Infinite Void again 149 159.
- Kasumi Miwa — Kyoto student whose sudden power and possession by Jie Jian attract his scrutiny. He investigates their relationship and summons them to Jujutsu High 179 180 231 233.
- Shoko Ieiri — Longtime friend who diagnoses his oxygen poisoning and prepares Geto’s body after Kenjaku’s defeat 103 112 441.
- Masamichi Yaga — Principal whose threatened execution helps push Gojo toward institutional reform. Yaga later holds him responsible for campus repair costs 101 102 459 464.
- Sukuna — Rival and, in some worlds, negotiating partner. Their encounters range from lethal duels to arrangements that allow supervised fights without sacrificing Yuji 198 237 443 445.
Story Role & Major Arcs
Jian Death Era Future
In the future shown after Jie Jian’s death, Gojo remains sealed for nearly twenty-two years. Yuta eventually obtains a newly woven Black Rope from Miguel and uses it to secure his release. Gojo declines Yuta’s offer to return the Gojo Clan leadership and instead becomes Jujutsu High’s principal 71.
His later years are marked by loneliness, overwork, and disappointment at the persistence of clan discrimination. In the sixty-eighth year of the era, he fights the bull-headed alien Dabura. His mental condition declines afterward, and he dies two years later 72.
Secret Return and Sukuna’s Elimination
Jie Jian kills Kenjaku, recovers the Prison Realm, and arranges Gojo’s release with Angel’s help. Gojo emerges without attacking those around him, despite Angel’s concern that imprisonment might leave him disoriented 99 123.
He agrees to keep his return hidden for an ambush during Sukuna’s use of Enchain. When Sukuna attempts to transfer into Megumi, Gojo seizes his wrist, allowing Angel to purify the relevant finger and Gojo’s retained final finger 100 101.
After Sukuna’s death, Gojo begins restructuring Jujutsu Society. The higher-ups’ attempt to have Yaga killed has destroyed his remaining faith in their leadership 102.
Island Duel with Jie Jian
Gojo initially controls the duel through speed, Limitless, and Infinite Void. Jie Jian counters by breaking his domain and exploiting the resulting technique burnout, forcing Gojo to rely on healing and Falling Blossom Emotion 104 105 106.
Jie Jian’s gas strategy subsequently turns Gojo’s own filtering defense against him. Gojo suffers oxygen poisoning while Jie Jian is incapacitated by Infinite Void, leaving the result dependent on who recovers first 111 112.
Gojo awakens 0.2 seconds earlier, but Jie Jian’s newly developed domain reverses the situation. Its assimilation effect turns Gojo’s waist into electricity, severing his body and briefly ending his vital signs. Jie Jian reverses the process and rejoins him; Gojo later appears alive while observing Jie Jian’s fight with Yuki 113 115 124.
Shinjuku Battles
In another worldline, Gojo returns from the Prison Realm’s front gate at the bottom of an 8,000-meter ocean trench. After meeting Sukuna in Megumi’s body, he schedules their duel for December 24 149.
Jie Jian interrupts the confrontation and exposes Sukuna’s use of Megumi’s soul for Mahoraga’s adaptation. Rather than continue risking his student, Gojo leaves the battlefield to Jie Jian 159 160.
In the reborn Miwa sequence, Gojo refuses detailed knowledge of his predicted defeat and dismisses Yuta’s research before the duel. The expected fatal outcome changes when a Spatial Slash misses his cursed energy source, allowing him to regenerate his legs and continue fighting. Sukuna’s four-armed form and repeated Spatial Slashes nevertheless push him into an increasingly costly battle 181 189 194 196 197 198 199.
Miwa’s Victory and Gojo’s Rematch
When Miwa defeats Sukuna at the Zenin estate, Gojo investigates Jie Jian’s presence and insists that Sukuna be separated from Megumi before further action. An agreement subsequently returns Sukuna to Yuji as a cursed object 233 234.
Gojo later fights a Sukuna who no longer possesses Ten Shadows. Without Mahoraga’s adaptation to Infinite Void, Sukuna loses the grueling rematch, making Gojo the second sorcerer in that world’s history to defeat him 237.
Maki Worldline and the Sukuna Slayers
Following Kenjaku’s defeat, Angel frees Gojo on November 12, 2018, after twelve days of imprisonment. His return suppresses the remaining threats of the Culling Game, and he oversees the cleanup of Kenjaku’s aftermath 441 442.
Gojo subsequently permits Uraume to remain at Jujutsu High under an agreement with Sukuna. He offers Sukuna an hour of release each day for a month in exchange for fighting the assembled ancient sorcerers 443 445.
The resulting challenge ends with Sukuna’s surrender and extensive campus destruction. Gojo is made responsible for repairs and hands Angel the stored fingers to reduce Sukuna’s future strength without killing Yuji 464.
Female Counterpart
Jie Jian encounters a female Satoru Gojo on an Okinawa beach. She identifies herself as the strongest contemporary sorcerer, the next Gojo Clan head, and the only Six Eyes bearer in hundreds of years 466.
She accurately identifies Jie Jian’s lightning-based acceleration, but has not yet comprehended the jujutsu core. During the mission to protect Riko Amanai, she and the female Geto agree to oppose Tengen’s assimilation if Riko wants to live 467 468 480.
Despite maintaining Limitless for more than a day, she dies before Jie Jian can intervene. The system confirms his rescue attempt has failed, and Geto’s subsequent confrontation unfolds beside her body 480 481 482.
Notable Quotes

- His friends publicly hope Jie Jian will teach him a lesson, although they privately expect Gojo to win 103.
- He jokes that his personality would probably send him to hell; Utahime and Shoko agree while watching the broadcast 109.
