Background / History

Childhood and Departure from the Zenin Family

Maki was born into the Zenin Family, one of Jujutsu Society’s Big Three Families. Its hierarchy devalued both women and people without useful cursed energy, leaving her expected to perform menial work despite her Heavenly Restriction. She rejected that future and entered Jujutsu High, intending to prove that cursed tools could make her an outstanding sorcerer 238.

Her ambition extended beyond personal recognition: she wanted to become family head and change the clan. Naobito’s approval helped make her departure possible—an opportunity ordinary family members could not safely assume they had 238 278.

Earlier Challenge Timelines

In an earlier confrontation with Sukuna, Maki attacked him from behind with the katana Mai had created at the cost of her life. Sukuna evaded the thrust. Maki subsequently entered Higuruma’s domain and pursued him with the Soul Liberation Blade while the domain prevented him from retaliating violently 67 69.

In the Kasumi Miwa challenge, Mai’s death had severed Maki’s emotional attachment to the Zenin Family. She was consequently pleased rather than angered by its destruction. After Miwa defeated Sukuna, Maki warned her that other sorcerers would challenge her reputation; she was nevertheless stunned when Miwa effortlessly dispatched Hajime Kashimo 234 235.

Sharing Her Body with Jie Jian

Jie Jian’s third Jujutsu World challenge tasked him with sharing Maki’s body, helping her become clan head, and reforming the Zenin Family. He was initially restricted to Maki’s abilities, forbidden from using cursed energy or cursed techniques, and deprived of his ability to rewind after death 237.

He arrived during Maki’s battle with Dagon on October 31. When he took control, her body suddenly displayed enough strength to kick Dagon into a crater. Maki experienced the takeover as a spectator within her own body, while Nanami immediately questioned whether the person fighting was still her 239 378.

The arrangement did more than change who controlled her movements. Suppressing Maki’s soul interrupted her connection with Mai, removing the cursed energy that prevented her complete awakening. This allowed both sisters to survive while Maki’s body manifested the Heavenly Tyrant—a combination that surprised even Kenjaku 240 270.

Shibuya and Naobito’s Will

Maki fought through Shibuya with Nanami and Naobito, relying on Jie Jian’s intervention when her own strength was insufficient. Naobito’s death saddened her despite her habitual insults toward him; he had been one of the few Zenin elders who treated her as a person 259 260.

Before dying, Naobito recorded a will naming Maki his successor after Megumi refused the position and recommended her instead. Megumi later delivered the recording, leaving Maki too shocked to take the phone until Jie Jian seized control to inspect it 255 273.

Becoming Clan Head

Furudate verified the will and recognized Maki as the twenty-seventh family head. Naoya rejected the succession and attacked with Projection Sorcery, only to be knocked unconscious by a single punch delivered through Maki’s body. Jinichi recognized the strength of a fully awakened Heavenly Tyrant 275.

Maki formally became clan head on November 3, 2018. With Jie Jian’s help, she removed entrenched opponents and began dismantling the structures that had trapped less powerful family members in dangerous work 278 279.

The reforms won widespread support, including from members who had initially opposed a female clan head. Yuta Okkotsu’s intervention helped suppress resistance from Jujutsu Society’s leadership 279.

Culling Game Operations

After the reforms, Jie Jian announced that his mission was complete and left Maki written intelligence about Sukuna and the Culling Game. Although he claimed he would sleep within her soul, he later admitted that he had lied and returned to participate 279 372.

Maki used his information to coordinate the sorcerers’ deployments: Yuji and Panda were sent to recruit Hakari, Hakari was directed toward Tokyo No. 2 Colony, and Yuta was assigned to Sendai. She also exposed Yorozu’s possession of Tsumiki, bringing Yuta and Yuki Tsukumo to suppress Yorozu when she reacted 370 371.

Meanwhile, Naoya, Ogi, and Jinichi conspired against her. Maki had initially chosen retirement and expulsion over killing the old leadership, influenced partly by Gojo’s approach to institutional reform. Their collaboration with incarnated sorcerers made her regret leaving them unmonitored 370 375 405.

Inside Tokyo No. 1 Colony, Maki followed the suspicious Remi to Reggie’s group and Ogi. Jie Jian handled the ensuing battle; afterward, Maki reclaimed control, looked at Ogi’s remains, and said that he had only been her biological father. She declined Jie Jian’s suggestion to help Yuta in Sendai, trusting Yuta to manage his own fight 403 407.

Her encounter with Higuruma ended through argument rather than simple force. Maki accepted responsibility for Naoya’s beating even though Jie Jian had performed it, reasoning that acts committed through her body remained her responsibility. Higuruma reconsidered his position, added a point-transfer rule, and transferred one point to her 432.

Sparring with Sukuna

With Gojo present to oversee the encounter, Maki challenged Sukuna to test her command of the Heavenly Tyrant. Her combination of swordplay, grappling, and close-range strikes forced Sukuna to acknowledge her hand-to-hand skill 448.

She improved throughout the fight, but Sukuna increased his cursed-energy output and defeated her with a Black Flash. Jie Jian then took over, provoking an argument because Maki still considered it her fight. She ultimately yielded so she could see whether he could defeat Sukuna with her body 449 450.

Later, Maki returned to the fight using Jie Jian’s borrowed cursed technique. Protected from physical attacks by Elementalization and from mental interference by his soul, she became absorbed in the battle and unleashed a massive cursed-energy breath before Gojo could stop her 463.

Appearance

• Build: A youthful high-school girl with a powerful physique and an imposing presence that surprises Reggie even at a distance 404.
• Hair: Short enough for strands beside her ears and forehead to be cut or blown aside during close combat 448 449.
• Scars: Her face is visibly scarred in the rooftop confrontation with Sukuna in an earlier challenge 145.
• Soul switching: Jie Jian’s takeover does not inherently alter her appearance, but changes in her gaze, manner, and presence can make the switch apparent to observers 260 450.

Personality

Maki is stubborn, disciplined, and unwilling to accept the inferiority assigned to her by her family. Her determination coexists with insecurity: Dagon’s overwhelming strength briefly makes her question whether she can become an excellent sorcerer at all. Even after gaining the Heavenly Tyrant, she openly admits that Jie Jian has fought most of her important battles and that she lacks experience controlling the power herself 238 240 378.

As clan head, she rejects treating weaker sorcerers as expendable. She refuses to send additional members into an unknown colony merely to obtain intelligence, and her longstanding pre-dawn training habit inspires others to train. Her protectiveness is especially strong toward Mai, whom she wants to spare both immediate danger and the burden of inheriting the family’s darkness 378 380 389 400.

She can be blunt and hot-tempered, particularly when Jie Jian embarrasses her or takes control without warning. Nevertheless, she accepts accountability for actions performed through their shared body rather than using his existence to evade responsibility 430 432 450.

Heavenly Restriction / Heavenly Tyrant

Maki’s Heavenly Restriction exchanges cursed-energy potential for physical ability. Her incomplete condition retains a tiny amount of cursed energy; removing it unlocks the fully realized Heavenly Tyrant 238 240 252.

• Physical power: Under Jie Jian’s control, her body kicks Dagon into a deep crater and knocks Naoya unconscious with one punch 239 275.
• Speed and reflexes: Evades an invisible slash from Sukuna through physical movement alone 447.
• Resilience: Continues fighting after repeated heavy blows, though Sukuna’s Black Flash inflicts damage that persists after Jie Jian takes over 449 450.
• Limit: Exceptional physical ability does not automatically supply the experience needed to use it effectively 378.

Barrier and Domain Interaction

With no cursed energy, Maki can escape targeting systems that identify people through cursed energy 37 430.

• Crosses Culling Game barriers without triggering their entry teleportation and can leave by the same route 401.
• Enters Higuruma’s domain from outside without being restricted by its boundary in an earlier challenge 69.
