Below Soul Saint, without a Martial Soul Avatar, it was still relatively easy to challenge opponents above one's level. But upon reaching the Soul Saint stage, Spirit Masters could awaken their Martial Soul Avatars, multiplying their strength. The rarer and more powerful the Martial Soul, the more astonishing the boost.
Take the Clear Sky Sect's signature Martial Soul, the Clear Sky Hammer.
