Background

Kaido had repeatedly challenged the Marines and other Four Emperors alone before the Marineford incident. He had reportedly been defeated seven times, captured eighteen times, subjected to more than a thousand tortures, and sentenced to execution forty times, yet conventional restraints and execution methods repeatedly failed to kill him. He had also sunk nine enormous prison ships. 24

Before his imprisonment, Kaido’s Beasts Pirates maintained an Artificial Devil Fruit supply line with Donquixote Doflamingo. Jack the Drought oversaw a shipment at Dressrosa, but Rear Admiral Roya confiscated the cargo and arrested both Jack and Doflamingo, cutting off the operation. 17 22 24

Kaido’s artificial Devil Fruit and weapons operation contributed to the suffering of civilians in Wano and Dressrosa. He cooperated with Shogun Orochi in Wano and supported Doflamingo’s seizure of Dressrosa, where the local population and Tontatta were exploited to produce weapons and Artificial Devil Fruits. 218

Personality

Kaido is aggressively proud, hot-tempered, battle-hungry, and contemptuous of opponents he considers weak. He attacked Marine Headquarters alone, called its defenders “insects,” and repeatedly dismissed Garp and Sengoku as remnants of an old era. 25 28

He values overwhelming strength and sees Conqueror’s Haki as proof of a ruler’s qualifications. Upon learning that Roya could match his Conqueror’s Haki and infuse it into attacks, Kaido decided that Roya had to die before becoming a greater threat. 29 30

Kaido can become violently indiscriminate when excited or enraged in battle. During the Summit War, he attacked Marines, enemy pirates, and even members of the Beasts Pirates, causing his own subordinates to flee from him. 93 149

Despite his arrogance, Kaido is capable of pragmatic surrender and long-term planning. He yielded to Roya when faced with certain death, while also intending to use the resulting chaos and a future rescue to weaken the Marines and recruit Roya. 32 33 77

Kaido later displays unusual restraint after King is severely injured by a member of the Justice League. Rather than immediately seeking revenge, he recognizes that attacking Roya’s group alone could devastate the Beasts Pirates and decides to seek Big Mom’s aid. 224

Attack on Marine Headquarters

Kaido arrives at Marineford in Azure Dragon Form, demanding Doflamingo, Jack, and Roya. He threatens to destroy Marine Headquarters and kill its Marines if Sengoku refuses. 25

He defeats Kizaru, Mihawk, Gecko Moria, and Blackbeard in succession, then withstands the combined assault of Garp and Sengoku without injury. 26 27 28 29

Battle Against Roya

After Garp and Sengoku fail to damage Kaido, Roya volunteers to fight him. Their Conqueror’s Haki clashes evenly, and their weapon collision shakes Marineford and splits the sky. 29 30

Escape and Big Mom Alliance

Big Mom and the Beasts Pirates attack Impel Down to rescue Kaido and Jack. Following a destructive Conqueror’s Haki clash with Big Mom in Level Six, Kaido stops fighting her, shares drinks with her, and proposes that they join forces. 55 58

The two Emperors agree to an alliance aimed at pursuing the One Piece and attacking Marine Headquarters, then leave Impel Down with their crews. 58 59

Summit War

Kaido and Big Mom arrive at Marineford during the conflict surrounding Ace and Whitebeard. Kaido competes with Big Mom over who can inflict greater destruction and launches Boro Breath alongside her Ikoku Sovereignty, forcing the Admirals and Shichibukai to intervene. 67 73

Kaido later attacks the battlefield indiscriminately, killing Marines, pirates, and his own subordinates. Kuzan temporarily freezes him with Ice Age, but Kaido breaks free, withstands Kuzan’s counterattack, and knocks the Admiral away. 93

Conflict with Blackbeard

Kaido becomes obsessed with killing Blackbeard after Teach obtains the Tremor-Tremor Fruit. He repeatedly forces his way through Marines, Blackbeard Pirates, and other combatants to reach him. 116 117

Blackbeard initially fights Kaido evenly by combining the Dark-Dark and Tremor-Tremor Fruits, then uses direct contact to weaken Kaido’s Zoan defenses and make him cough up blood. 120 148

Opposition to Roya and the Justice League

Kaido attempts to recruit Roya after Roya rejects the World Government’s pardon and leaves the Marines. He reveals that his earlier surrender was partly intended to create an opportunity to recruit Roya amid the chaos at Marineford. 77

Roya rejects him and questions whether Kaido is worthy of standing beside him. Their later Conqueror’s Haki clash confirms that Roya has grown beyond Kaido’s ability to challenge directly. 77 78
