Appearance
Sauros is a burly man past fifty whose muscular build strains against his luxurious clothing 27 43.
- Brown hair streaked with white 27.
- A physically imposing presence, reinforced by his habit of roaring rather than speaking quietly 27.
- Over 190 centimeters tall, with a white beard and large, bear-paw-like hands 367.
- For the journey to petition the king, he wears a well-tailored noble’s formal outfit with dark red trim and meticulously combs his graying hair, presenting an unusually solemn appearance 188.
Personality
Sauros is loud, domineering, and impulsive. He is openly attracted to beastfolk women and does not conceal his sexual encounters with maids, even when they show discomfort 27 43. He is also affectionate toward his granddaughter Eris and spends time with her, including taking her out to teach her basic riding 46.
His bluster has limits. When Cui Ciyou challenges his demand for formal respect and points out the fighters available in the manor, Sauros backs down and later admits to himself that Cui frightens him 43.
Family Affection and Aristocratic Beliefs
Sauros indulges Eris extensively. Her ability to ride from an early age is attributed to his support, and Cui describes him as willing to go to unreasonable lengths to fulfill her wishes 330. His affection remains evident after her three-year absence: he apologizes when she challenges his habitual roaring, tousles her hair, and proudly praises her increased height and strength 367.
Despite his freewheeling behavior, Sauros respects entrenched aristocratic traditions. He accepts James’s original selection as successor even though he despises the political methods James used to defeat Philip 80 81. He also enforces household dining rules requiring family members to wait until the head has finished eating, and invokes the expectation that a wife should wait for her husband 369.
He regards powerful men having multiple women as legitimate and frames producing descendants as a duty to preserve a superior bloodline. He tells Cui that Eris should accept this expectation and offers to intervene if she objects. Unlike his sons, Sauros was an only child and did not personally experience a sibling struggle for succession 470.
Responsibility and Political Judgment
The threat of the Displacement Incident reveals a serious, protective side beneath Sauros’s temper and indulgence. He insists on personally petitioning the king because the crisis concerns his people, his family, and Eris, and pledges his family’s resources and his own life to securing their safety 188 189 192.
He is more politically perceptive than Cui initially assumes. While preparing for the royal audience, he advises Cui to emphasize Fitoia’s economic and strategic importance, the consequences of mass displacement, and the political significance of Cui’s engagement to Eris 189. His anxiety during the court’s deliberations and tearful relief at the evacuation decree further demonstrate his concern for the territory’s population 198.
His trust in Cui eventually extends to endorsing Cui’s public opposition to prejudice against Sylphy and the Superd Race. Sauros openly supports these actions as evidence that Cui is worthy of Eris and of leading House Boreas 373 388.
Power Progression
Sauros is physically powerful and carries an enormous two-handed sword. Cui suspects that he is a Sword Saint, but the available assessment is Cui’s inference rather than a confirmed rank or promotion 27 43 61 367.
| Chapter | Development or Assessment | Evidence and Limitations |
|---|---|---|
| 27 | Demonstrates considerable physical strength | His deliberate shoulder slap is strong enough to stagger an ordinary knight, although Cui remains unmoved 27. |
| 43 | Suspected Sword Saint-level swordsman | Cui identifies Sauros and Alphonse as the manor’s likely strongest existing fighters and guesses that both are Sword Saint rank; Sauros’s actual rank and sword style are not confirmed 43. |
| 61 | Demonstrates strength while armed | In his rage over Thomas’s betrayal, his grip makes his two-handed sword creak 61. |
| 177 | Overmatched by Ghislaine’s Sword King presence | Ghislaine’s killing intent stops his attempted advance toward Cui before he can attack 177. |
| 387 | Continues practicing swordsmanship | He trains with Cui during the peaceful period following Cui’s return from Saint Grad; no new rank is established 387. |
Story Role
- Hiring Eris’s tutors: Sauros interviews Cui Ciyou and Ghislaine. Ghislaine’s Sword King title impresses him; he hires both for two Asla Kingdom gold coins per month. He also slaps Cui’s shoulder hard enough to stagger an ordinary knight, but Cui does not move 27.
- Introducing the tutors to Philip: He enthusiastically tells his son that he has found exceptional instructors for Eris, then leaves Philip to arrange their meeting with her 28.
- Confrontation in the courtyard: After Cui and Ghislaine interrupt an encounter with a rabbit-eared maid, Sauros demands that Cui address him as “Lord Sauros.” Cui threatens him and assesses the manor’s combat strength; Sauros claims he was joking and retreats 43.
Eris’s Kidnapping and the Retainer Alliance
- Thomas’s betrayal: After the household discovers that Thomas is missing during Eris’s kidnapping, Sauros angrily declares that he will behead the traitor himself. He later reaches the tower with Philip, Hilda, and Roxy and witnesses Thomas holding the injured Eris hostage 61 65.
- The missing magic beast meat: Eris takes Sauros’s treasured stash of magic beast meat and gives it to Cui. On discovering the loss, Sauros nearly grabs his sword to confront Cui and remains openly hostile toward him for some time afterward, repeatedly snorting at him in the corridors 77.
- New retainers: Following Eris’s rescue, Philip recruits Cui and Ghislaine as retainers whose obligations include protecting Sauros and other core family members during serious threats. Philip then goes to inform Sauros and announces plans to publicize the addition of two Sword King-level fighters 78.
Succession Dispute
Sauros remains the current head of House Boreas while James, his elder son, is originally designated to succeed him. According to Philip, James wins the succession contest by secretly aligning with Darius Silva Ganes, a political enemy of the family, rather than through superior ability or Sauros’s favoritism 80 81.
Disappointed in James, Sauros chooses to spend his years in Fitoia, away from the royal capital. Although he regards James’s dependence on Darius as a disgrace, he initially accepts the outcome because of the noble families’ deeply entrenched succession rules 81. Later developments replace this expected succession with Sauros’s recognition of Cui as the designated next head of House Boreas 369 374.
Warning of the Displacement Incident
Cui reveals his otherworldly origin and knowledge of the future to Sauros and Philip. Sauros responds with disbelief and fury and attempts to advance on him, but Ghislaine intervenes with killing intent strong enough to force him back 176 177.
Cui predicts that the Displacement Incident will scatter Fitoia’s living creatures across the world. He also warns that Sauros will subsequently be publicly executed in Ars for failing to oversee his territory and protect his people, while Philip and Hilda will die in the Conflict Zone after being mistaken for spies. Sauros’s anger gives way to fear and disbelief 177 178.
These are predictions of the original course of events, not Sauros’s eventual recorded fate. He survives the changed course of the disaster and later returns to rebuild Fitoia with Philip and Hilda 265 300.
The Great Migration
Sauros and Philip agree to support Cui’s evacuation plan and his public presentation as a “Prophetic Blessed Child.” Philip uses Cui’s engagement to Eris as political protection, while Sauros jokingly tells Cui that he should now address him as “Grandfather.” Both also agree to help bring Cui’s friends and their families from Buena Village to the Boreas estate 179.
Sauros personally accompanies Cui, Roxy, and Ghislaine to Ars while Philip remains in Roa to organize preparations. During the journey, Sauros helps refine the arguments for royal support and promises that House Boreas will support the plan regardless of its cost 188 189.
At the royal audience, he introduces his companions and presents the coming catastrophe as a matter of national importance. When ministers object to Cui’s proposal, Sauros pledges everything his family possesses, including his own life, to relocating Fitoia’s citizens safely 190 192.
While awaiting the decision, Sauros receives Princess Ariel with appropriate noble courtesy. He is particularly alarmed by Water God Reida Reia’s visit, recognizing that her judgment of Cui’s prophecy could influence the Supreme Council 194 196.
After seven tense days, King Joseph Asura approves the Great Migration and praises Sauros’s loyalty and responsibility toward his people. General Griffith Lucario is assigned military command alongside Sauros, and the party returns to Roa with royal officials, authorization documents, and emergency resources 198.
- The Boreas mansion becomes the migration headquarters, where Sauros, Philip, royal officials, and military representatives coordinate routes, schedules, and temporary camps 199.
- Sauros and the king’s envoy publicly announce the mandatory evacuation, with military escorts promised and disobedience threatened with charges of treason 199.
- Sauros and Philip use Cui’s prophetic reputation to resolve disagreements and reassure frightened residents 199.
- Sauros joins the others in watching the evacuation processions leave Roa 200.
- By the beginning of Dragon King Calendar Year 417, Sauros, Philip, and Hilda have departed for Milbotz with the last group of evacuees ahead of Cui’s party. The territory-wide evacuation succeeds 207.
Reconstruction and Reunion
After the Displacement Incident, Sauros, Philip, and Hilda return to Fitoia and begin rebuilding it. Cui confirms their safety through Kishirika’s Clairvoyance and later observes them working with Alphonse to restore Roa and support returning residents 265 300.
Cui sends Sauros a letter reassuring him that the missing party is safe and asking him to cancel the costly SS-Rank Search-and-Rescue Mission at the Guild headquarters in Ars. Eris adds that she has become a Sword Saint and misses her family. Sauros’s letter is later confirmed to have arrived, unlike the message intended for Paul’s search team 300 301 374.
During the three years before Eris’s return, Sauros becomes increasingly irritable and visits Roa’s eastern wall every morning, standing there for an hour. When the returning group reaches the estate, he is initially stunned and then overjoyed. He and Philip enthusiastically praise Cui for bringing Eris home, and Sauros affectionately celebrates his granddaughter’s growth 367.
Recognition of Cui and Defense of the Superd
At breakfast after the reunion, Sauros allows Cui to eat alongside him rather than follow the usual household waiting rule. He explains that Cui is both his finest “grandson-in-law” and the designated next head of House Boreas, provoking Eris’s objections 369.
Sauros subsequently praises Cui’s public protection of Sylphy and his defense of the Superd Race as conduct worthy of Eris and the family’s future leader. At the welcome banquet, he publicly recognizes Cui as House Boreas’s next head, described as its third-generation head 373 374.
During Eris’s fifteenth-birthday banquet, Sauros warmly welcomes Cui and endorses his declaration that Rujierd is a hero and that the Superd deserve their honor restored. He announces that anyone who slanders the Superd Race will make an enemy of House Boreas, while Philip opens Fitoia to Superd residents, workers, and traders 387 388.
Later Family and Political Affairs
When Sauros learns that the Greville merchant family has petitioned to oversee Fitoia’s reconstruction, he flies into a rage. Cui persuades him to leave the matter in his hands, reflecting Sauros’s growing willingness to trust Cui’s leadership 389.
Sauros also encourages Cui to accept multiple wives and produce descendants, promising to speak to Eris if she objects 470. He attends the wedding celebrations with Philip and Hilda but does not remain long afterward, as Fitoia’s reconstruction continues to demand their attention 475.
Relationships
- Eris Boreas Greyrat — Granddaughter. Sauros dotes on her and takes her on outings; Cui suspects his indulgence helped shape her carefree behavior 28 42 46. His support enables her to learn riding at an early age, and her safety is a major reason for his personal involvement in the Great Migration 188 330. Their reunion combines habitual shouting with genuine affection, pride, and a rare apology from Sauros 367. She later marries Cui, whom Sauros had already treated as his grandson-in-law 369 475 581.
- Philip Boreas Greyrat — Son. Philip is markedly more refined and apologizes to the tutors for Sauros’s rough manner 28. He is Sauros’s second son and the loser of the original succession contest against James 78 80 81. Father and son cooperate in organizing the evacuation and rebuilding Fitoia afterward 199 265 300.
- Cui Ciyou — Eris’s academic tutor. Sauros initially distrusts and tries to intimidate him, but becomes wary of his strength 27 43. Their relationship experiences further hostility over Sauros’s missing meat and Cui’s revelations about the future, before developing into trust through the evacuation effort 77 177 189 192. Sauros later recognizes him as Eris’s husband-to-be and the next head of House Boreas, practices swordsmanship with him, and publicly supports his defense of the Superd 369 374 387 388.
- Ghislaine Dedoldia — Eris’s swordsmanship tutor. Her Sword King reputation earns Sauros’s respect during their first meeting 27. She later becomes a Boreas retainer, accompanies him to Ars, and makes clear that her loyalty to Cui takes precedence when she stops Sauros from attacking him 78 177 188.
- James Boreas Greyrat — Elder son and originally designated successor. Sauros is deeply disappointed in his alliance with Darius and initially accepts his succession only because of the family’s binding traditions 80 81. Sauros’s later recognition of Cui as the next head supersedes that earlier expectation 369 374.
- Hilda Boreas Greyrat — Philip’s wife and Sauros’s daughter-in-law. She survives the altered course of the Displacement Incident and works with Sauros and Philip to rebuild their home 177 265 300.
- King Joseph Asura — Sovereign whom Sauros petitions for evacuation support. The king’s decree praises his loyalty and concern for Fitoia’s people and gives him a military leadership role in the Great Migration 190 192 198.
- Reida Reia — Water God and influential guardian of the kingdom. Sauros receives her with marked deference and anxiously awaits her judgment of Cui’s prophecy 196.
- Sylphiette and Rujierd Superdia — Beneficiaries of Cui’s protection and advocacy. Sauros endorses Cui’s stand for Sylphy and publicly commits House Boreas to opposing slander of Rujierd’s race 373 388.
- Beastfolk maids — Sauros’s attraction to beastfolk women shapes his conduct within the estate 27 43. Cui notes that pregnant maids are dismissed with severance payments while children of beastfolk ancestry are excluded from the household to preserve its Humanfolk bloodline; speculation that particular outsiders might be Sauros’s descendants remains unconfirmed 130. Cui also attributes some lesser nobles’ demand for trafficked beastfolk to their imitation of Boreas preferences, rather than establishing Sauros’s direct participation in those trafficking operations 376.
