Background / History
Yu Xiaogang was present at Notting Academy as a martial soul theorist and personally guided Tang San's early cultivation. He took particular interest in Gu Ling after the latter awakened the rare Bone Dragon Martial Soul with Innate Full Soul Power, intending to direct him toward the defensive cultivation route exemplified by Bone Douluo Gu Rong. 1
His proposed guidance immediately collapsed into a public dispute when Gu Ling demonstrated that his Bone Dragon could form blades, claws, a piercing tail, detachable projectiles, and remotely recalled bones without any Soul Ring. Yu Xiaogang refused to revise his conclusion, expelled Gu Ling from his office, and declared that he would no longer teach him. 2 3
While accompanying Tang San and Director Su in the Soul Hunting Forest, Yu Xiaogang again tried to steer Gu Ling toward defense by recommending a 130–150-year Rock Armor Turtle as his first Soul Ring. Gu Ling rejected the recommendation, and a further argument over Tang San's Blue Silver Grass cultivation plan led Yu Xiaogang to separate from Gu Ling and Director Su. 5 6 7
Yu Xiaogang was later poisoned during Tang San's acquisition of a Mandra Snake Soul Ring. Director Su treated him, after which he resumed advising Tang San and urged him to register with Spirit Hall for the Soul Master subsidy. He nevertheless portrayed Spirit Hall's awakenings, subsidies, and registration system as calculated attempts to expand influence. 10
Over the following six years, Yu Xiaogang continued favoring Tang San's Twin Martial Souls over Gu Ling's Bone Dragon and advised Tang San to avoid Gu Ling, claiming Gu Ling would become jealous once Tang San's advantages emerged. This contributed to the former classmates' distant relationship. 15 16
By the time of the Soto City incidents, Yu Xiaogang was associated with Shrek Academy. He and Tang San identified the Bone Dragon user who defeated Dai Mubai and Ma Hongjun as a possible older acquaintance, reviving his resentment toward Gu Ling's past challenges to his theories. 40
Personality
Yu Xiaogang is highly invested in his authority as a martial soul theorist. He presents his conclusions with confidence and frequently relies on established precedent—especially Gu Rong's defensive Bone Dragon path—to support them. 1 2
When Gu Ling's demonstrations contradict his assumptions, Yu Xiaogang becomes angry, shifts from theoretical arguments to accusations of arrogance and disrespect, and refuses to concede error. His humiliation at being unable to answer a six-year-old's evidence becomes a lasting source of hostility. 3
He is deeply protective of Tang San and consistently restores his student's confidence after setbacks. However, this mentorship is colored by favoritism: he frames Tang San's defeat by Gu Ling as an unfavorable martial-soul matchup rather than acknowledging Gu Ling's superior performance. 15 16
Martial Soul Theory and Teaching
Bone Dragon Cultivation Doctrine
Yu Xiaogang argues that the Bone Dragon Martial Soul should prioritize defense because of its hard skeletal structure and the precedent set by Bone Douluo Gu Rong. He recommends defensive Soul Rings to improve bone density, hardness, regeneration, and protective capability. 1 2
- He considers assault development inefficient due to the Bone Dragon's weight, lack of flesh and muscles, and presumed inferiority in speed and explosive power. 2
- He recommended the Rock Armor Turtle as Gu Ling's first Soul Ring to strengthen his bones and establish a defense-type foundation. 5
- Gu Ling's innate bone blades, tail thrusts, detachable spikes, and bone recall directly challenged this assessment. 2 3
Blue Silver Grass Development
Yu Xiaogang planned for Tang San's Blue Silver Grass to follow the control path, favoring snake-type Soul Rings for binding, toughness, paralysis, and venom. 5 6
- Tang San successfully absorbed a Mandra Snake Soul Ring under this guidance and gained a binding-and-venom-based first Soul Skill. 10 14
- Gu Ling criticized the plan as redundant because Blue Silver Grass could already entangle naturally as a vine-type plant, arguing that its Soul Rings should instead develop traits such as hardness, toxicity, growth speed, recovery, or vitality. 6
- Yu Xiaogang defended Soul Skill-enhanced entanglement as stronger than the Martial Soul's innate binding ability, but could not provide a convincing rebuttal during the dispute. 6
Combat Analysis
Yu Xiaogang recognizes broad distinctions between martial soul types and later explains that control-system Soul Masters are intended to restrain opponents and create openings for allies rather than overpower assault-system Soul Masters directly. 14 15
- He correctly identifies that Gu Ling's Bone Dragon armor blocked the poisonous spikes of Tang San's Blue Silver Grass, preventing the Mandra Snake venom from entering Gu Ling's body. 15
- He underestimated Gu Ling's first Soul Ring and predicted Tang San would win their spar, unaware that Gu Ling possessed a nearly six-hundred-year spatial Soul Ring. 13
- He later believes Tang San's Blue Silver Grass can restrict Gu Ling's mobility in a team battle, despite Gu Ling's danger in one-on-one combat. 50
Relationships
- Gu Ling — Former prospective student and ideological opponent. Yu Xiaogang attempted to impose a defensive Bone Dragon path, expelled Gu Ling after being challenged, and continued dismissing his talent in front of Tang San. 1 3 15 40
- Tang San — Disciple. Yu Xiaogang plans Tang San's Soul Ring path, reassures him after defeat, and warns him to keep his distance from Gu Ling. 4 10 15 16
- Director Su — Notting Academy director who traveled with Yu Xiaogang and Tang San to the Soul Hunting Forest; later treated Yu Xiaogang's Mandra Snake poisoning. 5 10
- Flanders — Shrek Academy associate who consults Yu Xiaogang after Dai Mubai and Ma Hongjun are defeated; both connect the attacker to Gu Ling. 40
- Spirit Hall — Distrusted by Yu Xiaogang, who interprets its free awakenings, registration services, and Soul Master subsidies as methods of political recruitment and influence-building. 10 11
- Gu Rong — The Bone Douluo whose defensive Bone Dragon cultivation serves as Yu Xiaogang's primary precedent for Gu Ling's proposed path. 1 2
Story Role / Major Arcs
Notting Academy Dispute
Yu Xiaogang initiates the central conflict over Gu Ling's cultivation, insisting that the Bone Dragon must become a defensive Martial Soul. His theory is repeatedly challenged through Gu Ling's direct demonstrations and independent analysis. 1 2 3
Soul Hunting Forest Arguments
During the first Soul Ring hunt, Yu Xiaogang recommends a Rock Armor Turtle for Gu Ling and promotes snake-type Soul Rings for Tang San. Gu Ling publicly challenges both recommendations, leading Yu Xiaogang to withdraw from the shared expedition. 5 6 7
Tang San's Early Guidance
Yu Xiaogang supervises Tang San's Mandra Snake Soul Ring acquisition, encourages official Soul Master registration, and consoles Tang San after his first defeat to Gu Ling. 10 15
Renewed Conflict in Soto City
After Dai Mubai and Ma Hongjun are beaten by a Bone Dragon Soul Master, Yu Xiaogang suspects Gu Ling's involvement. His memories of Gu Ling's defiance turn the incident into a continuation of their old conflict. 40
