Background / History

Yu Xiaogang was present at Notting Academy as a martial soul theorist and personally guided Tang San's early cultivation. He took particular interest in Gu Ling after the latter awakened the rare Bone Dragon Martial Soul with Innate Full Soul Power, intending to direct him toward the defensive cultivation route exemplified by Bone Douluo Gu Rong. 1

His proposed guidance immediately collapsed into a public dispute when Gu Ling demonstrated that his Bone Dragon could form blades, claws, a piercing tail, detachable projectiles, and remotely recalled bones without any Soul Ring. Yu Xiaogang refused to revise his conclusion, expelled Gu Ling from his office, and declared that he would no longer teach him. 2 3

While accompanying Tang San and Director Su in the Soul Hunting Forest, Yu Xiaogang again tried to steer Gu Ling toward defense by recommending a 130–150-year Rock Armor Turtle as his first Soul Ring. Gu Ling rejected the recommendation, and a further argument over Tang San's Blue Silver Grass cultivation plan led Yu Xiaogang to separate from Gu Ling and Director Su. 5 6 7

Yu Xiaogang was later poisoned during Tang San's acquisition of a Mandra Snake Soul Ring. Director Su treated him, after which he resumed advising Tang San and urged him to register with Spirit Hall for the Soul Master subsidy. He nevertheless portrayed Spirit Hall's awakenings, subsidies, and registration system as calculated attempts to expand influence. 10

Over the following six years, Yu Xiaogang continued favoring Tang San's Twin Martial Souls over Gu Ling's Bone Dragon and advised Tang San to avoid Gu Ling, claiming Gu Ling would become jealous once Tang San's advantages emerged. This contributed to the former classmates' distant relationship. 15 16

By the time of the Soto City incidents, Yu Xiaogang was associated with Shrek Academy. He and Tang San identified the Bone Dragon user who defeated Dai Mubai and Ma Hongjun as a possible older acquaintance, reviving his resentment toward Gu Ling's past challenges to his theories. 40

After the Imperial Dou Team defeated Shrek, Yu Xiaogang accused the winners of excessive violence, demanded a rematch, and blamed Zhu Zhuqing's refusal to use the Hell White Tiger fusion. Gu Ling publicly challenged his theories, teaching credentials, and personal history. Yu Xiaogang spat blood amid the spectators' ridicule. He later rejected Qin Ming's proposal that Shrek join Heaven Dou Royal Academy unless Gu Ling was expelled, drawing a rebuke from Flanders. A later dispute began when Tang San took herbs from Dugu Bo's Medicine Garden. Yu Xiaogang defended his disciple's claim, arguing that finding the herbs entitled Tang San to pick them. After Liu Erlong attacked Gu Ling, Gu Ling isolated Yu Xiaogang in the Reincarnation Deadland, beat him, and gravely injured his lower body. Under duress, Yu Xiaogang acknowledged Dugu Bo's ownership of the herbs, Tang San's theft, his own insults, and his use of Spirit Hall's theories. 81 82 83

Dugu Bo subsequently defeated the Golden Holy Dragon formed by Yu Xiaogang, Flanders, and Liu Erlong. Facing death, Yu Xiaogang invoked his father, clan leader Yu Yuanzhen, despite having been expelled from the Blue Lightning Tyrant Dragon Clan. Dugu Bo spared his life but extracted the Golden Holy Dragon origin awakened within Luo Sanpao. Ning Fengzhi later helped stabilize Yu Xiaogang's internal injuries and confirmed that the lost origin could not be restored. Yu Xiaogang blamed Gu Ling and vowed revenge. 87 88 89 93

After several months, Yu Xiaogang could walk and conduct Shrek's tournament training again, though he remained thinner and affected by the loss. Hoping to pass Rank 29, he eagerly consumed a lingzhi supplied by Tang San, unaware that its boost was drawing on his Life Origin. Following another defeat against Gu Ling's team, he demanded its disqualification and lunged at Gu Ling, only to be slapped down by Gu Rong. He subsequently attended to the badly injured Tang San and learned that his disciple's Eight Spider Lances had been destroyed beyond repair. 97 101 106 107

Personality

Yu Xiaogang is highly invested in his authority as a martial soul theorist. He presents his conclusions with confidence and frequently relies on established precedent—especially Gu Rong's defensive Bone Dragon path—to support them. 1 2

When Gu Ling's demonstrations contradict his assumptions, Yu Xiaogang becomes angry, shifts from theoretical arguments to accusations of arrogance and disrespect, and refuses to concede error. His humiliation at being unable to answer a six-year-old's evidence becomes a lasting source of hostility. 3

He is deeply protective of Tang San and consistently restores his student's confidence after setbacks. However, this mentorship is colored by favoritism: he frames Tang San's defeat by Gu Ling as an unfavorable martial-soul matchup rather than acknowledging Gu Ling's superior performance. 15 16

His desire for Tang San and Shrek to defeat Gu Ling increasingly becomes a means of vindicating his own theories and reputation. Flanders notices this fixation during the Imperial Dou Team match and later challenges Yu Xiaogang when his demand for Gu Ling's expulsion threatens the Shrek students' prospects. 53 60

Yu Xiaogang then joins Flanders and Liu Erlong in a Golden Holy Dragon fusion against Dugu Bo, but the fusion is shattered.
