Background / History

The Hyuga attacked the Hagoromo Clan while it was escorting ninja tools ordered by the Uchiha. The resulting Uchiha relief operation recovered the supplies after a prolonged battle, but inflicted heavy losses on both sides; the Hyuga clan head returned mortally wounded and died, leaving thirteen-year-old Hyuga Tennin as successor. 5 8

For generations, the Hyuga and Kaguya maintained a close relationship. The clans coordinated their attacks on the Uchiha: the Hyuga action against the Hagoromo diverted Uchiha forces, enabling the Kaguya to assault the weakened Uchiha compound. 6 8 When the Uchiha retaliated by nearly exterminating the Kaguya, Hyuga forces breached the Hagoromo line and rescued roughly twenty survivors. 11 12

After the rescue, Tennin blamed his father’s decisions for placing the clan at risk of suffering the Kaguya’s fate. The elders removed his father as clan head, the Branch Family refused the former leader’s commands, and Tennin assumed control. 12

Under Tennin, the clan reassessed its neutrality as the Uchiha and Senju accumulated allied clans. He judged inaction to be a path toward extinction and began pursuing an alliance with the Uchiha, despite the clans’ previous conflicts. 38

To verify reports that an Uchiha possessed the Kaguya Clan’s Dead Bone Pulse, the Hyuga commissioned an Uchiha taijutsu instructor for the Branch Family head, Hyuga Tensei. The sparring match confirmed the report and exposed the Uchiha’s ability to transplant certain Kekkei Genkai. 39 40 41

Tennin sought access to this transplantation method in exchange for supporting the Uchiha. Although the Uchiha refused to disclose the procedure because of its lethal failure rate, they promised to attempt to create one Hyuga warrior with both the Byakugan and Dead Bone Pulse if the clan genuinely aligned with them. 42

The Hyuga committed more than one hundred Branch Family ninja under Tensei during the Uchiha–Senju war. Their Gentle Fist assault sealed enemy chakra pathways and protected Uchiha ninjutsu users, decisively shifting the battlefield in the Uchiha alliance’s favor. 49

The Hyuga maintain an unusually rigid Main Family–Branch Family hierarchy designed to preserve control of the Byakugan. Main Family members possess authority over Branch Family ninja, while the Branch Family bears the burden of protecting the clan’s ocular bloodline. 12 39

Caged Bird Seal

The Caged Bird is a seal branded on the foreheads of Branch Family members.

• It prevents enemies from acquiring a captured Branch member’s Byakugan: a Main Family member can activate the seal to destroy the captive’s brain and render the eye useless. 39
