Power Progression

Background

Shangwu was a modern person transmigrated into the Naruto world during the Warring States Era. At six years old, he became an Uchiha child forced into lethal combat before awakening the Sharingan. His first supply-convoy battle revealed his unique treasure-chest system: enemies he personally kills can drop loot boxes containing weapons, supplies, skill fragments, and eventually Kekkei Genkai. 1

After rapidly learning Earth Release: Earth Spear, he earned recognition from Uchiha Kuwajima and the clan elders as a prodigy comparable to Madara. Though initially focused on gaining kills and improving himself, he began considering the Uchiha Clan’s political future, advocating protection and integration of weaker subordinate clans rather than simple exploitation. 2 9

Two years later, he became known among the younger Uchiha as “the Star.” He supported Madara’s succession as clan head and supplied the strategic vision for a centralized ninja-village system built around standardized squads and Uchiha leadership. 13

Shangwu’s knowledge of the original future made him distrust the Uchiha–Senju reconciliation that would historically lead to Konoha. He instead worked to ensure Uchiha dominance, first through dependent clans and an Uchiha-led village, then through conquest of the Ninja World and the acquisition of Ōtsutsuki power. 3 57 132

After using the divine artifact Plow to cross timelines, Shangwu entered a later era in which the Uchiha faced persecution within Konoha. He became the central figure behind the clan’s departure from Konoha, its resettlement in the Land of Whirlpools, and its subsequent militarization. 141 146 147 149

Appearance

Shangwu wears clothing bearing the Uchiha crest and appears younger than his actual battlefield reputation suggests. When activating the Dead Bone Pulse, he becomes a bone-clad figure described as resembling a demon. 16 41

Personality

Shangwu is pragmatic, analytical, and willing to use battlefield violence as a resource. He immediately recognized the value of his treasure-chest system and deliberately claimed kills to accumulate weapons and techniques. 1 He values planning and long-term clan strength, arguing that alliances and protection of subordinate clans are more sustainable than simple exploitation. 9 12

His pragmatism has a darker side. He conducted dangerous Kekkei Genkai-transfer experiments on refugees, accepting a severe mortality rate in pursuit of strengthening the Uchiha. He later entrusts his laboratory to Izuna after recognizing his desire for power and revenge. 23

In combat, Shangwu can become exhilarated by slaughter, particularly after activating the Dead Bone Pulse. He is initially arrogant toward lesser-known opponents, but his battle with Qian Rou forces him to confront that flaw and treat every enemy as a serious threat. 16 33 34

As Uchiha authority expands, Shangwu becomes increasingly authoritarian and utilitarian. He judges clans by their strategic usefulness, offers survival in exchange for submission, and treats the destruction of defiant enemies as a necessary warning to others. 57 61

Shangwu is also highly ambitious. His original goal of preventing Uchiha decline develops into a desire to unify the Ninja World under Uchiha rule, conquer the Ōtsutsuki, and ultimately lead the Uchiha into space as rulers of the universe. 131 132

Uchiha Political Development

First Senju War

Shangwu faces Tobirama during the Uchiha–Senju conflict. Unable to match Tobirama’s older body in taijutsu, he unveils the Dead Bone Pulse and becomes a major battlefield threat through his combination of bone weapons and Sharingan perception. 14 15

He kills roughly sixty enemy ninja during the battle and gains additional elemental skill fragments as well as Rust Release. His violence frightens Senju, Uzumaki, and allied ninja despite their superior numbers. 15 16

After the battle, he reveals that Ying has acquired Dead Bone Pulse through his experimentation. The Uchiha council learns that his attempt to transfer Kekkei Genkai killed most of fifty refugee test subjects. 23

Chinoike Clan Conflict

While protecting Shinteng Zoi, Shangwu confronts Chinoike assassins and learns that their Blood Dragon Eye can turn controlled people into living bombs. 25

He later battles Chinoike clan head Qian Rou during the assault on the Land of Lightning’s capital. Qian Rou’s layered human-bomb tactics expose the limits of his Dead Bone Pulse and force him to reevaluate his own arrogance. 32 33

After his ocular power improves, he counters the human bombs with Water Formation Wall and remains competitive against Qian Rou’s Blood Dragon Eye. Madara ultimately ends the battle with Susanoo and Majestic Destroyer Flame, accidentally destroying the treasure chest Shangwu expected from Qian Rou. 34 35

Hyuga Alliance

Shangwu accepts a suspicious Hyuga mission to serve as a taijutsu instructor, using it to investigate the clan’s intentions. He spars with Hyuga Tensei and later Hyuga Tennin, learning that the Hyuga’s Gentle Fist can penetrate his bone defenses. 38 40 41

The resulting relationship contributes to a Uchiha–Hyuga alliance. During the later Senju war, the Hyuga Branch Family enters the battlefield on the Uchiha side, motivated in part by the prospect of producing a Byakugan–Dead Bone Pulse wielder. 49

Renewed War Against the Senju

Shangwu accompanies Madara to meet Hashirama but opposes any reconciliation with the Senju. He supports Madara’s decision to declare war, believing peace would only leave the Uchiha vulnerable. 43 45

In the resulting large-scale conflict, he uses Three-Tomoe Sharingan, Dead Bone Pulse armor, and the Dragon Lair summoning contract to slaughter enemy forces and pressure Tobirama. 46 49 50

Following the Senju defeat, Shangwu converts the Sarutobi, Shimura, and Uzumaki Clans into Uchiha dependents rather than destroying them outright. He evaluates each clan by its strategic specialties, including elemental techniques, ruthless covert work, and sealing arts. 57

Unification of the Ninja World

After the Great War, Shangwu expands his ambitions beyond the Ninja World. He proposes leaving the Senju and Hyuga to administer the world while the Uchiha pursue interstellar conquest, although Hyuga Tensei chooses to accompany the Uchiha rather than remain behind. 131

He assists the Uchiha-led order in consolidating global authority, empowers allied clans for future cosmic conflicts, and remains wary of Hashirama despite the latter’s changed allegiance. 132

Konoha Timeline and Uchiha Exodus

After crossing timelines, Shangwu appears in a later Konoha-era Uchiha crisis. His identity as Uchiha Jobu persuades Setsuna and Fugaku to support him, while his overwhelming strength allows him to defeat Itachi, kill Danzō, and force Konoha into negotiations. 141 143

Shangwu purifies Setsuna’s bloodline, protects his Mangekyō Sharingan from blindness, forcibly awakens the Mangekyō in Tekka and Inabi, and uses Alchemy to turn captured rogue ninja into resources for Uchiha development. 149

When the Great Ninja Villages attack the new settlement, Shangwu supports an Uchiha defense built around four Susanoo users and recognizes Sasuke’s initial One-Tomoe Sharingan awakening as the beginning of his potential. 150

After Fugaku is murdered by Obito, Shangwu identifies the masked man’s true identity and directs Sasuke to train under Tekka, intending to cultivate the boy’s Indra-linked potential. 167
