Background

Hou Tu is one of the Twelve Ancestral Witches and is regarded as one of their strongest members. When Dan Jing demanded essence blood from her and Xuan Ming, Hou Tu reluctantly forced out two drops containing a special Great Dao aura; the loss left her pale and took time to recover from. Dan Jing subsequently identified her as possessing “the bearing of attaining the Sage Realm.” 50 140

The Witch Race later tested whether Dan Jing’s appraisal was sincere. Although Xuan Ming attempted to negotiate on Hou Tu’s behalf, Dan Jing waited for Hou Tu herself to act. Once she stepped forward, he immediately gave her a strand of Primordial Purple Qi, which entered her Primordial Spirit True Soul. 142

When Nuwa began pursuing Sagehood, Hou Tu sensed the corresponding movement in her Primordial Purple Qi and sought Dan Jing’s promised guidance. He gave her a Gold-Leaf Jade Scroll detailing two routes: sacrifice her own Ancestral Witch nature to create Reincarnation, or transform the Pangu Divine Hall into Reincarnation at the cost of the Witch Race’s greatest foundation. Hou Tu returned to Mount Buzhou to place the decision before her people. 174 175

Supported by the other Ancestral Witches, Hou Tu carried the Pangu Divine Hall to the Endless Sea of Blood. There, she used her own blood and Pangu’s aura to transform the hall into the Six Paths of Reincarnation. Great Dao Origin restored her exhausted power and elevated her to Sagehood. 178 182

Establishment of Reincarnation and the Netherworld

Hou Tu’s Six Paths of Reincarnation governs the post-death destinations of beings below the Great Luo Realm:

• Higher paths — Heavenly Being, Earthly Being, and Human Realm.
• Lower paths — Beast, Evil Ghost, and Hell.
• Karmic order — Virtuous beings may enter higher paths, while evil beings are directed to the lower paths. 182

After attaining Sagehood, Hou Tu established the Netherworld to stabilize Reincarnation, maintain the Earthly Dao, and govern underworld beings. She refined worlds within the Endless Sea of Blood to create its foundation and established its principal landmarks:

In her Innate Dao Body, Hou Tu bears divine patterns associated with the Great Daos of Earth and Reincarnation. Her Sage manifestation conveys heaviness, tolerance, compassion, peace, and steadiness. 182 200

Hou Tu is direct, proud, and fearless. She prefers an immediate confrontation to grandstanding, as shown when she answers Nuwa’s taunts with: “Cut the damn nonsense. Let’s fight!” 229

Her bluntness is balanced by strong judgment. She considers the newly ascended Three Pure Ones, Jieyin, and Zhunti reckless for challenging Dan Jing before they had mastered their Sage powers, and she refuses to rely on them in a future confrontation with him. 208 244

She is deeply loyal to the Witch Race and especially protective of Xuan Ming. Hou Tu refuses to sacrifice Xuan Ming’s future merely to serve political reconciliation between the Heavenly Court and Netherworld. 270 280
