Background / History

A Black Crystal embedded in the Grand Elder’s chest was already being used to monitor and test prospective vessels in the underground hospital. Its pulses affected nearby Nen readings, and the Elder used it to send a filthy mass of post-mortem Nen through a restraint needle into the disguised Illumi. 13 16

When Ella bled outside the church, the Black Crystal reacted violently across the facility. The Elder identified her as the “true Cradle,” confirming that the crystal could distinguish the real vessel from Illumi’s impersonation. 20

The Creation Society later deployed a Black Crystal Fragment toward Ella on a stretcher. Bai Zhu destroyed it with Hadō #33: Sōkatsui before it could reach her, leaving only charred remains and molten metal. 21 25

Illumi’s infiltration revealed the larger ritual network: the Black Crystal Mother Stone was connected to numbered pregnant women and their fetuses, converting their lives into fuel for the Sanctification Descent. 23 28

After the ritual was sabotaged, the Creation Society expanded its use of Black Crystal technology through Holy Knight armor, synchronized formations, underground circuits, and the weapons wielded by the white-clad completed vessels. 35 38 45 47

Appearance

Black Crystal appears in several forms, from embedded fragments to large ritual infrastructure. Its surfaces are typically black and reactive; some forms pulse, spread through formations, or display organic traits.

Black Crystal strongly reacts to Ella, particularly to her blood and the entity within her abdomen.

• Ella’s bleeding caused the Black Crystal’s readings and pulse rate to spike, leading the Elder to identify her as the true Cradle. 20
• A nearby fragment caused Ella’s heartbeat, temperature, and abdominal condition to deteriorate rapidly. 21 23
• The ritual later extended Black Crystal markings from beneath Ella’s bed across her abdomen and toward her chest. 47 49

Post-Mortem Nen Manipulation

The crystal is closely tied to residual Nen and the Creation Society’s resurrection research.
