Background / History

A Black Crystal embedded in the Grand Elder’s chest was already being used to monitor and test prospective vessels in the underground hospital. Its pulses affected nearby Nen readings, and the Elder used it to send a filthy mass of post-mortem Nen through a restraint needle into the disguised Illumi. 13 16

When Ella bled outside the church, the Black Crystal reacted violently across the facility. The Elder identified her as the “true Cradle,” confirming that the crystal could distinguish the real vessel from Illumi’s impersonation. 20

The Creation Society later deployed a Black Crystal Fragment toward Ella on a stretcher. Bai Zhu destroyed it with Hadō #33: Sōkatsui before it could reach her, leaving only charred remains and molten metal. 21 25

Illumi’s infiltration revealed the larger ritual network: the Black Crystal Mother Stone was connected to numbered pregnant women and their fetuses, converting their lives into fuel for the Sanctification Descent. 23 28

After the ritual was sabotaged, the Creation Society expanded its use of Black Crystal technology through Holy Knight armor, synchronized formations, underground circuits, and the weapons wielded by the white-clad completed vessels. 35 38 45 47

When the Pope initiated Father Body Descent, the Black Crystal network revealed its true parasitic function. It began reclaiming the Nen, life force, and residual vitality previously distributed to Holy Knights, attendants, medical staff, children, and maternity-ward subjects, treating the Pope, Holy Son, and Holy Maiden as organs or vessels of a larger body. 53

Bai Zhu, Illumi, and Milluki prevented the Father Body from reclaiming Ella and stopped the Pope from merging with it. Minazuki’s blood engulfed the Pope, coffin, and emerging hand, causing the altar’s Black Crystal network to collapse into fragments, crystal dust, and a red-and-black Post-Mortem Nen Contamination Core. 53

After the battle, Minazuki’s remaining blood burned away the Church’s residual Black Crystal traces, while the children’s collars shattered and the patterns beneath their skin disappeared. Later Creation Society facilities nonetheless fielded evolved Holy Knight cores sent from Sankara, indicating that the organization retained or reproduced aspects of the technology. 55 138

During the investigation of Meteor City’s harbor, Milluki compared a recovered Holy Knight Core with residue from secretly transported Black Boxes. The materials matched, and the core’s internal structure resembled mineralized biological tissue rather than an ordinary mineral. The boxes also emitted the same waveform recorded during the Unicorn Giant Whale ritual in the Old Trench. These findings suggested that the Church’s core technology belonged to a larger supply and processing network, with the whale’s horn proposed as a possible material source. 147

Further analysis established that the gold-edged badge, Holy Knight Core, and Black Box residue operated at the same frequency. When Bai Zhu placed the badge against the core, it released a Black Gold fragment engraved with the message, “King’s Port. Fall in. Access to the Mother Chamber granted.” Illumi subsequently confirmed that the underwater port had operated for at least twenty years and processed Old Trench materials into cores while transporting children, test subjects, and survivors farther underground. 150

Records recovered from the Black Ships revealed that Kakin and the Creation Society were experimental partners rather than simply employer and contractor. Holy Knight Cores were among the Society’s technologies that enabled Kakin’s parasite Nen Beast research to overcome its early high failure rates. Damaged footage also showed the White Cloth man delivering cores to Kakin priests and revealed that Sankara’s Pope had survived his earlier defeat, although badly injured. 165

The same investigation identified Ella as Camilla Huikelo, Kakin’s Second Prince, recontextualizing the Black Crystal’s original “true Cradle” recognition within a wider operation involving royal blood recovery and vessel transfer. The records did not establish that Black Crystal generally detects royal ancestry. 20 165

The red-and-black residual Core remained relevant after Sankara. Maha was later shown holding and examining it, and Bai Zhu recalled that the Red-Black Core, like other anomalous entities he had encountered, had attempted to invade his system. 317 324

Appearance

Black Crystal appears in several forms, from embedded fragments to large ritual infrastructure. Its surfaces are typically black and reactive; some forms pulse, spread through formations, or display organic traits.

• A transported fragment was wrapped in a fleshy, contracting membrane beneath black cloth and shed powder that melted pits into snow. 21 25
• The fragment’s covering bulged toward Ella as she moved, while dense knocking sounds suggested something inside was trying to emerge. 25
• The Mother Stone is taller than a person, secured in metal braces, riddled with openings, and connected to extensive pipelines. 28
• Holy Knights carry thumb-sized crystals in their chests, integrated into their black armor and weapons. 35 38

Black Crystal strongly reacts to Ella, particularly to her blood and the entity within her abdomen.

• Ella’s bleeding caused the Black Crystal’s readings and pulse rate to spike, leading the Elder to identify her as the true Cradle. 20
• A nearby fragment caused Ella’s heartbeat, temperature, and abdominal condition to deteriorate rapidly. 21 23
• The transported fragment reacted to Ella’s movements, stretching its covering toward her when she attempted to retreat. 25
• The ritual later extended Black Crystal markings from beneath Ella’s bed across her abdomen and toward her chest. 47 49

The Black Crystal network can reclaim resources from every connected subject rather than merely empowering them.

• During Father Body Descent, the Pope reclaimed Nen, residual life force, and prior enhancements from Holy Knights, children, attendants, elders, and hospital personnel. 53
• The Pope, Holy Son, and Holy Maiden functioned as connected vessels or organs rather than independent leaders within the larger Black Crystal organism. 53
• Black Crystal spikes impaled Bai Zhu and began draining his vitality and Reiatsu; Minazuki’s regenerative blood replenished the losses faster than the crystal could extract them. 53
• The system’s reclamation endangered Ella until Illumi disabled nearby nodes, Milluki sealed the ward door, and Bai Zhu’s blood forced the Father Body’s hand back. 53

Material Origin and System Integration

Later investigations connected Holy Knight Core technology to Old Trench materials, Black Gold interfaces, and Kakin’s experimental infrastructure. These findings establish links through the cores without identifying every Black Gold object as Black Crystal. 147 150 165

• A recovered Holy Knight Core matched residue from the Black Boxes transported into Meteor City’s harbor. Its internal structure suggested mineralized biological tissue, with Unicorn Giant Whale horn fragments proposed as a possible source. 147
• The Black Boxes emitted a signal identical to the waveform recorded during the Old Trench’s Unicorn Giant Whale ritual. Milluki initially inferred that an outside organization supplied the Society with materials, routes, and processing techniques. 147

• Bai Zhu’s Sōkatsui vaporized the deacons carrying a fragment, burned through its organic membrane, and destroyed the fragment itself. 25
• White Lightning can shatter a Holy Knight’s chest crystal after its armor has been compromised. 40
• Illumi’s exploding Nen Needles released fine needles that fractured a small piece of the Holy Son’s nearby Black Crystal circuit. 50
• Minazuki’s blood pool corrodes Black Crystal formations, armor, and the saintess’s Black Crystal Spear. 50
• Minazuki’s blood also suppressed the corrosive force remaining in wounds inflicted by Black Crystal. 51
• The saintess’s repair threads, severed body parts, and crystal fragments were consumed by the blood pool. Bai Zhu crushed the last escaping Needle Tube after pinning it to the stone steps. 52
