Background / History

Illumi arrives in Sankara Town with his younger brother Milluki while investigating the Creation Society. He silently interrupts Milluki’s confrontation with Bai Zhu, having approached closely enough to avoid Bai Zhu’s notice, and warns Milluki not to engage unknown people carelessly 1 2.

Initially, Illumi dismisses Bai Zhu as weak and refuses his proposed partnership. His attitude changes after using Gyo on the Creation Society’s children and confirming that they all possess nearly identical, untrained Nen—a phenomenon he considers profoundly abnormal 3.

The investigation was assigned by his grandfather, who described the church as “special” without explaining its significance. Bai Zhu’s suggestion that the Nen-bearing fetuses might be “outsiders” prompts Illumi to connect the church’s abnormalities with the foreign presence within his own family 4 12.

After Bai Zhu captures Pige Aaron, Illumi examines the unfamiliar Kidō binding and accepts Bai Zhu’s explanation that his Reiatsu is a Nen-derived power altered by an extreme vow. Judging Bai Zhu more useful alive than dead, he becomes part of the investigation and uses a Nen Needle to turn Aaron into an obedient informant 10.

Illumi infiltrates the Creation Society by impersonating the pregnant Ella. The Elder identifies his disguised body as an ideal vessel for the Holy Advent Ritual after Illumi endures contaminated postmortem Nen and secretly isolates its effects with Nen Needles 12 16.

When the ritual schedule is accelerated, Illumi maintains the false pregnancy by creating artificial muscular responses for the Fetal Breath Resonance test. He later stages “Container Number Fifteen’s” apparent supernatural disappearance, assumes new identities, and remains underground to map the altar, Black Crystal system, and sacrificial operation 17 22 23.

During the final crisis, Illumi is exposed by the white-clad Holy Son and abandons stealth to sabotage the facility through his controlled personnel. His decoys and puppets prove ineffective against the Black Crystal system, which tracks living targets and corrodes Nen; by the Pope’s awakening, his escape routes have been sealed 47 50.

Although trapped and severely hindered by Black Crystal corrosion and Life Circuit suppression, Illumi survives when Bai Zhu’s intervention restores his damaged body. He subsequently identifies the Pope, Holy Son, and Holy Maiden as vessels or organs within a greater Black Crystal-linked entity, then assists Milluki in disabling altar nodes and preventing the Father Body from reclaiming Ella 51 53.

Following the destruction of Sankara Sanctuary, Illumi takes custody of the Red-Black Core as part of the Zoldyck commission. He accepts Bai Zhu’s demand for five billion Jenny and three Zoldyck services, judging both the Core and Bai Zhu’s rescue of himself and Milluki to be worth the cost 54 56.

He also offers to arrange an exorcist at the Zoldyck Family’s expense after interpreting Bai Zhu’s ultimate technique as the product of a severe restriction. Bai Zhu declines, claiming that his ability’s restrictions cannot be removed. Illumi then captures surviving Church personnel for interrogation and erases their records before pursuing the Creation Society’s Meteor City branch 56 57 58.

Illumi continues tracing the Creation Society into Meteor City and Kakin-linked trafficking facilities. He helps organize the investigation with Bai Zhu, Milluki, Hisoka, and the Phantom Troupe, infiltrates Kakin-controlled maintenance routes, and sabotages enemy submarines during the Derelict Port operation 130 153 154.

During that operation, Illumi recovers damaged footage showing Ella’s blood activating a Kakin Royal Crest. The recording identifies her as a “stray Royal Blood individual” suitable for evaluation by the First Queen, exposing the royal bloodline component of the trafficking network 154.

After the Black Gold Cathedral’s destruction, Illumi participates in gathering experiment records, transfer lists, Black Gold samples, and evidence of Kakin–Creation Society cooperation. He continues charging Bai Zhu for damage, mission interference, lost evidence, and additional Nen Nail use while the group prepares to leave Meteor City 168.

After returning to the Zoldyck estate, Illumi escorts Bai Zhu to meet Maha and later brings him to Alluka’s containment area. His discussions with Bai Zhu reveal that his interest in controlling Alluka/Nanika is tied not only to the family’s power, but also to his fear that the Zoldyck succession system may eventually force Killua to eliminate his siblings 316 320 321.

A later investigation uncovers a separate, concealed commission bearing Illumi’s approval: he retrieved experimental embryo D-04 from a Kakin laboratory for Mystery International, the company owning the Financial Center. Despite the contract’s enormous payment, Milluki cannot find it in the family’s internal business backups after repeatedly searching nearly ten years of records 412.

Milluki subsequently confirms that Illumi secretly sold Hive technology and left a hidden backdoor, while the family concealed the truth from him. Illumi is a tall figure with waist-length black hair, pale slender hands, and hollow, catlike eyes. He frequently operates in a beautiful female form, including a convincingly pregnant impersonation of Ella 2 3 16.

He is highly curious about phenomena that defy his understanding of Nen. Bai Zhu’s aura-less Reiatsu and Kidō provoke both analytical interest and a possessive desire to understand him, causing Illumi to keep the dangerous outsider alive rather than eliminate him 9 10 11.

Although emotionally unreadable, Illumi is disciplined under extreme pressure. He tolerates contaminated postmortem Nen, maintains cover under constant observation, and continues gathering intelligence even when escape would be safer 16 22. His covert care for Ella—including altering her medical records, hiding medicine, and weakening her restraint—shows a restrained protective side expressed through action rather than reassurance 33 34.

Illumi accepts operational losses without visible resentment. After Bai Zhu defeats him in their estate sparring match, he simply acknowledges the result and notes that Bai Zhu has become stronger, treating the encounter as one instance in an ongoing process of mutual assessment 316.

His concern for the Zoldyck Family is genuine but inseparable from his need for control. He wants Killua to become a capable heir while remaining dependent on him, considers using a Nen Needle to establish long-term survival commands in Killua’s mind, and seeks ways to control Alluka/Nanika before their power can threaten the family 320.

His composure can break when allies expose him to unexpected danger. While escaping the collapsing passages beneath Derelict Port, he curses and subsequently reprimands Milluki for giving Bai Zhu a dangerous explosive without explaining its use. Bai Zhu’s intervention restores Illumi’s damaged body and halts the immediate effects of Black Crystal corruption. Core Commission and Meteor City Pursuit

After Sankara Sanctuary’s fall, Illumi accepts the Red-Black Core from Bai Zhu under a five-billion-Jenny agreement and continues following the Creation Society’s surviving network toward Meteor City 56 58. During the divided investigation, Chrollo assigns Illumi to trace the transport network and locate its middleman, while Bai Zhu investigates the Church and the Troupe searches garbage-district entrances 132.

Kakin Port Operations

Illumi infiltrates Kakin-linked maintenance routes beneath Derelict Port, quietly neutralizes guards, extracts shipping data, and sabotages enemy submarines while Bai Zhu assaults the sacrificial fleet 153 154. He survives Milluki’s Hollow Rose detonation beneath the port, then confronts Bai Zhu over the near-fatal explosion before rejoining the operation against the Church’s true underground core 155 156.

The footage he recovers reveals Ella’s Royal Blood and the First Queen’s interest in her, helping establish that the port serves a broader Kakin-linked exploitation network rather than only the Creation Society 154.

Black Gold Cathedral and Meteor City Aftermath

Illumi takes the covert route during the assault beneath the Old Church, eliminating Kakin guards and dealing with escape points while the main group confronts the Cathedral’s individualized suppression systems. During the subsequent collapse, he uses Nen Nails to redirect falling boulders away from his route 157 158 167.

After the Cathedral’s destruction, he helps gather surviving evidence of the royal experiments and trafficking network. As the group prepares to leave, he approves the idea that Killua needs discipline, rejects Hisoka’s interest in Killua, and continues calculating Bai Zhu’s debts 168.

Zoldyck Estate and Alluka

Illumi returns to the Zoldyck estate with Bai Zhu and tests him in a spar after Killua falsely accuses Bai Zhu of bullying him. Though Bai Zhu wins through layered Kidō traps, Illumi accepts the result and escorts him to Maha 316.

He later reveals his concerns about the Zoldyck succession system and his desire to control Alluka/Nanika’s power before it can endanger the family. When Bai Zhu interacts privately with Nanika and the estate’s surveillance network is destroyed, Illumi responds with rapid containment measures and an unsuccessful interrogation of Bai Zhu and Killua 320 322 325.

Illumi returns with butlers and nonelectronic recording equipment within five minutes of the surveillance failure, first checking that Killua and Alluka are unharmed. Further decoding confirms that Illumi secretly sold Hive technology and left a backdoor, with the family hiding the arrangement from Milluki. Bai Zhu encourages Milluki to turn that access against the system, while privately withholding evidence of Illumi’s recent login 419.

Milluki uses the backdoor to cut power to roughly thirty percent of the Hive base stations and slow D-04’s refinement.
