Background
Crow King was an orphan who later travelled with a pirate crew. Seven years before Akatsuki’s founding, he killed a Marine captain, stayed behind to delay the pursuing Marines, and was imprisoned in Impel Down. 42
He was held on Level 5 before Ye Qiong discovered him in the unoccupied Level 55 interlayer. As a Pangolin Fruit user, Crow King expanded the hidden refuge underground, allowing Ye Qiong and the Night Emperor to evade the prison search. 23
The Night Emperor trained Crow King in Observation and Armament Haki alongside Ye Qiong. During their imprisonment, Crow King served as Ye Qiong’s companion, helped maintain the hideout, and received Army Wolf corpses sent through Ye Qiong’s spatial passages. 23 24 25
Appearance
In human form, Crow King is a short youth with long black hair, thick brows, large eyes, and distinctive white pupils. At around fifteen, he was shorter than the eleven-year-old Ye Qiong. 23
- His Pangolin Fruit has contributed to his short stature and white eyes, which improve his ability to see underground at night. 60
- His beast form is an enormous dark pangolin with black scales and exceptional digging claws. 34 247
- When his Armament Haki is active, his body resembles black armor—originating his “Black Armor” epithet. 43 128
- He can partially transform individual body parts, such as turning an arm into a black-scaled pangolin limb. 206
Personality
Crow King is energetic, blunt, and shamelessly talkative. He often provides comic relief through exaggerated complaints, poorly timed jokes, and a tendency to boast about himself. 24 28 43
Despite his unserious manner, he is fiercely loyal to Ye Qiong. Having no home to return to after escaping Impel Down, he immediately chose to follow Ye Qiong and later accepted Akatsuki’s cause without hesitation. 42 43 He is protective of his companions, repeatedly placing his armored body between White Snow and stronger enemies. 34 36
His fighting style reflects a deeply defensive temperament. White Snow observes that he invests most of his training into defense, even though his Armament Haki could support stronger offensive techniques. 128 He is nevertheless fearless when challenged, provoking opponents far larger or stronger than himself and refusing to retreat. 57 206
Abilities & Skills
Pangolin Fruit
Crow King possesses a Zoan-type Pangolin Fruit that grants beast transformation, partial beastification, powerful digging ability, and enhanced physical attributes.
- Excavated and expanded the secret Level 55 refuge beneath Impel Down. 23
- Can rapidly burrow through solid ground, using earth almost like water. 29 247
- Uses full beast form to become a massive armored pangolin. 34 210
- Can partially beastify his limbs for focused attacks, such as Pangolin Strike. 206
- His digging ability allowed him to evade Sengoku beneath Mary Geoise while deliberately prolonging the destruction and confusion. 247
Armament Haki
Crow King’s greatest specialty is defense. The Night Emperor recognized his talent for Armament Haki, though Crow King initially used it primarily as a “turtle shell.” 29
- Covers his entire beast body in dense Armament Haki. 34
- Withstood Shiryu’s sword attacks while shielding White Snow, though the strikes still wounded him. 34
- Survived Rankyaku from Zoan-enhanced CP9 agents without visible damage. 128 130
- Reinforced his transformed arm to shatter Giant Samo’s fingers with Pangolin Strike. 206
- Protected himself from falling rubble after Impel Down’s gates were destroyed. 39
Observation Haki
Crow King trained in Observation Haki under the Night Emperor during the group’s confinement in Level 55. 23
- Sensed Shiryu’s sword energy during the prison break. 35
- His perception was insufficient to evade Shiryu’s attack when White Snow was the target, showing that sensing danger did not always give him enough time to react. 35
Physical Strength and Endurance
Crow King has exceptional strength, stamina, and carrying capacity, especially in beast form.
- Carried the Night Emperor and unconscious White Snow while rapidly ascending Impel Down’s passages. 36
- Continued sprinting and shattering Ye Qiong’s Space Cubes as footholds without slowing during the escape. 36 37
- Defeated Arlong decisively. 54 56
- Lifted Machvise despite the latter’s ten-ton weight, though he struggled as Machvise increased it further. 207 208
- Matched Giant Samo’s fist without taking a step backward, then incapacitated the giant’s arm. 206
Geppo
Crow King learned to use Geppo despite previously avoiding the technique. 206
- Propelled himself through the air after using Pangolin Strike against Samo. 206
- His aerial movement marked a major improvement over his earlier inability to fly or remain airborne without outside support. 35 206
Techniques
- Pangolin Strike — A partial-beastified, Armament Haki-reinforced punch that shattered Giant Samo’s fingers and disabled his arm. 206
- Underground Ambush / Sinkhole Tactics — Burrows beneath opponents to create sinkholes, destabilize battlefields, or erupt from below. 128 209 210
- Full-Body Armament Defense — Covers his armored pangolin form in Haki to nullify attacks such as Rankyaku. 128 130
Relationships
- Ye Qiong — Former prison companion, leader, and “Boss.” Crow King chose to follow him after escaping Impel Down and became one of Akatsuki’s founding members. He was devastated when Ye Qiong was presumed dead and tearfully reunited with him in Dressrosa. 31 43 206 210
- White Snow — Fellow Akatsuki member and frequent sparring partner. Crow King regularly shields her in battle, though he is also terrified of her Black Flames. 29 34 57
- Night Emperor — Haki instructor during the group’s imprisonment in Level 55. Crow King addressed him respectfully as “Lord Night Emperor.” 23 24
- Fisher Tiger — Akatsuki ally. Crow King fought alongside Tiger during the Water 7 conflict and accepted his authority during the Fish-Man Island confrontation. 57 128
- Phantom Fruit — Ally during the Corrida Colosseum battle royale. Their contrasting approaches—his direct aggression and her caution—frequently lead to arguments. 203 204 210
- Arlong — Defeated by Crow King on Fish-Man Island; Arlong later avoided confronting him directly out of fear. 54 56
- Sengoku — Pursued Crow King beneath Mary Geoise after Crow King’s sabotage caused an earthquake. Crow King avoided direct combat and used his superior digging ability to delay him. 247
Story Role
Impel Down Escape
Crow King created and maintained the Level 55 hideout that sheltered Ye Qiong and the Night Emperor from the Marines. He trained in Haki, assisted with supplies, and carried the group during their ascent through Impel Down. 23 24 25 36
During the escape, he used his massive pangolin form to protect White Snow from Shiryu and charged through the breach Ye Qiong created in Impel Down’s gates. 34 37
Founding of Akatsuki
After escaping, Crow King revealed that he had nowhere else to go and pledged himself to Ye Qiong. He and White Snow became Akatsuki’s first members when the organization was formed on Sabaody Archipelago. 42 43
He later served as a drill instructor for the group’s crew, enforcing harsh physical training under increased gravity. 98
Water 7 Conflict
Crow King fought CP9 agents in the Fourth Area by burrowing beneath the battlefield and creating sinkholes. His Armament Haki proved too strong for their Rankyaku, causing the agents to flee rather than face him. 128 130
Corrida Colosseum
Imprisoned by the Donquixote Family, Crow King entered the Corrida Colosseum battle royale to prevent anyone else from obtaining the apparent second Space-Space Fruit. 202 203
He defeated Giant Samo using Pangolin Strike, fought through Senor Pink and Machvise’s coordinated assault, and ultimately defeated Senor Pink before erupting from beneath the arena in giant pangolin form. 206 207 210 His destruction of the colosseum exposed Dressrosa’s hidden prison. 210
Crow King recognized Ye Qiong after his return and was overcome with relief, believing his former leader had died. 210
Mary Geoise Sabotage
During the assault on Mary Geoise, Crow King’s task was to cause disorder and delay Sengoku and Garp rather than confront them directly. He burrowed beneath the Red Line, worsened the earthquake through his escape route, and taunted Sengoku while maintaining the pursuit. 247
Trivia
- Crow King’s self-proclaimed title is Akatsuki’s “Strongest Excavator.” 247
- He once considered selling himself after learning that his bounty was 180 million Beli. 43
- He calls Ye Qiong both “Brother Ye” and “Boss.” 23 43
- Although he fears White Snow’s flames, he will still protect her against stronger opponents. 34 57
