Background / History

Naruto is an Academy student in the same class as Chiba Lin Chuan. He is socially isolated and regularly targeted by other children, yet he repeatedly steps in to protect Hinata Hyuga when she is insulted for her Byakugan. 3 6

He often lacks food, relying on instant noodles and occasionally forgetting to bring lunch. Lin Chuan begins providing him with homemade meals, which Naruto pays for in advance after accepting an arrangement for daily lunches. 7 10

Naruto seeks to improve after failing a kunai-throwing examination. He trains with Lin Chuan, improving his accuracy and joining him for fishing, dinner, and weighted runs. 11 12

After Lin Chuan is taken into Root, Naruto worries over his disappearance. He asks Hiruzen Sarutobi when Lin Chuan will return, identifying him as his first friend and the only person who regularly brought him lunch. 40

Naruto is the son of the Fourth Hokage and the Nine-Tails jinchuriki. Naruto is outspoken, impulsive, and protective of people being bullied. He confronts classmates who insult Hinata even when outnumbered, and he joins fights readily when provoked. 3 6

He is also friendly and trusting. He quickly accepts Lin Chuan’s meals, trains at his suggestion, shares snacks during punishment, and grows attached to him as a friend. 6 7 11 40

Despite becoming discouraged by demanding practice and struggling with chakra control, Naruto remains eager to improve when faced with failure or punishment. 11 12

Lin Chuan’s Disappearance

Naruto follows Lin Chuan’s example during the written examination, trusting that they will pass rather than attempting to solve the test normally. He advances with the remaining candidates to the Forest of Death. 99

In the forest, Naruto attacks Orochimaru with a mass of Shadow Clones. Orochimaru destroys them in a single Wind Release attack and applies the Five Elements Seal to Naruto’s abdomen, leaving him unconscious and disrupting his chakra control. Sakura attempts to escape with him at Sasuke’s instruction, but Orochimaru’s giant snake returns them to the battlefield. 101

Sasuke Retrieval and Valley of the End

After Sasuke defects, Naruto joins the pursuit led by Shikamaru. He continues chasing Sasuke while Lin Chuan uses a Shadow Clone to delay Kimimaro and Rock Lee arrives to fight him. Naruto and Sasuke’s confrontation begins at the Valley of the End. 105

Kakashi later reaches the battlefield with Pakkun and finds Naruto lying unconscious on the wet ground. He takes Naruto to Konoha Hospital for examination before reporting Lin Chuan’s recovered belongings and ashes to Tsunade. 106
