Personality

Sasuke is proud, competitive, and intensely conscious of his standing as an Uchiha prodigy. Losing the kunai examination to Lin Chuan—a child from an ordinary shinobi family—deeply humiliates him, particularly because Fugaku treats the loss as a personal failure rather than an opportunity to improve 11.

His rivalry with Lin Chuan becomes obsessive. Sasuke repeatedly seeks direct confrontations despite being decisively outmatched, acting before matches begin and refusing to accept the gap in their abilities 13 23. After the clan massacre, his academic rank and former pride lose their meaning; he returns to school emotionally burdened and without satisfaction at becoming the apparent top student in Lin Chuan’s absence 40.

His grief and desire for revenge remain closely tied to feelings of helplessness. When Lin Chuan invokes his inability to avenge his parents, Sasuke breaks down in tears, having suppressed his crying since witnessing their deaths. Story Role / Major Arcs

Academy Rivalry with Lin Chuan

Sasuke first becomes aware of Lin Chuan when Lin scores perfectly in the kunai examination and takes first place. The loss is magnified by Fugaku’s disappointment and establishes Lin as the peer Sasuke must surpass 10 11.

Sasuke later blocks Lin from entering the classroom and attacks him, only to be knocked unconscious by Lin’s Body Flicker Technique. His shock deepens when Lin overwhelms two older Uchiha students and Sasuke with Water Shock Wave, demonstrating speed and ninjutsu beyond Sasuke’s expectations 13 15.

During a formal Academy spar, Sasuke charges Lin with a kunai before Iruka gives the signal. Lin traps him with wire-linked shuriken, binds him to a substitution log, and knocks him unconscious with a Body Flicker-enhanced side kick; Sasuke never gets to use Great Fireball 23.

Uchiha Clan Massacre

The Uchiha clan is massacred before the Academy’s second term ends. Itachi is identified as the perpetrator and leaves Sasuke hospitalized after using Tsukuyomi on him 24.

Sasuke eventually returns to school, but Lin Chuan’s disappearance leaves him nominally ranked first without any sense of accomplishment. The loss of his family has eclipsed his former concern with Academy status 40.

Lin provokes Sasuke into another fight, repeatedly defeats him, and brings his grief and helplessness to the surface by questioning how he can avenge his family. Sasuke cries, then reaffirms his determination to grow stronger. Lin offers him a hand up and treats him to Ichiraku Ramen, establishing their friendship 71 72.

Sasuke follows Lin’s training routine, recognizes the effort behind his strength, and resolves to work harder than Itachi. Naruto joins them, beginning a lasting pattern of shared conditioning and joint spars 73.

Team 7 passes Kakashi’s test, with Naruto and Sasuke demonstrating strong teamwork. Seeing Lin Chuan depart on an A-rank mission soon afterward renews Sasuke’s frustration at falling behind and strengthens his desire to awaken his Sharingan 83 84.

Sharingan Development and Uchiha Investigation

Sasuke seeks Lin Chuan’s help after Kakashi refuses to explain how to awaken his Sharingan. Lin persuades Kakashi to assist and restrains Sasuke to a tree before the genjutsu begins. Reliving the massacre drives Sasuke’s eyes through one, two, and three tomoe 96.

Kakashi stops the procedure before a possible further evolution, leaving Sasuke with the Three-Tomoe Sharingan. Sasuke subsequently asks Lin about its use, his chakra shortage, and another spar. Lin directs him toward Kakashi for instruction and warns him about the village leadership’s fear of the Sharingan 97.

Sasuke acknowledges inconsistencies surrounding the massacre but maintains his determination to kill Itachi. With Hiruzen’s permission and an ANBU escort, he enters Konoha’s archives, retrieves inherited Uchiha ninjutsu and genjutsu, and learns about the Mangekyō and further eye evolution. Chunin Exams and Orochimaru’s Mark

Before the exams, Sasuke intervenes when Kankuro bullies Konohamaru, striking him with a pebble and challenging the Sand ninja. His strength after awakening the Sharingan has become sufficient to surpass Naruto in their rivalry 98.

In the Forest of Death, Orochimaru defeats Naruto and turns his attention to Sasuke. Sasuke orders Sakura to take Naruto away while he holds their enemy off. His Sharingan genjutsu and Lightning Cutter attacks inflict severe injuries, but Orochimaru repeatedly replaces his damaged body 101.

As his chakra runs out, Sasuke attempts another genjutsu-assisted escape, only to discover that he has trapped a clone. The real Orochimaru intercepts him and implants the Cursed Seal of Heaven. Defection from Konoha

After Tsunade becomes Hokage, concerns about Sasuke lead her to assign Lin Chuan to watch him as an ANBU operative and report any attempted defection 105.
