Power Progression

Background

Terai is a ninja of the Shimura Clan and a talented child from Danzō’s own clan. Unlike many Root recruits, he voluntarily applied for the ANBU Training Class because he believed its harsh environment would temper him into a stronger ninja. Danzō specifically instructed him to build a relationship with Chiba Lin Chuan, whose ability had attracted Danzō’s attention 31 35.

He ranked first in Root’s initial endurance trial and received the temporary designation Number Thirty-Four. His result placed him among the strongest candidates alongside Lin Chuan, Fū, and Torune 29 31.

His clan connections give him limited access to advance information about Root’s training arrangements. Before the practical examination, he knows that the trainees will receive outside missions, but cannot determine the contents of the randomly selected mission scrolls. He also expects his family to provide a Chakra Blade when he is older 41 48.

Terai remains in Root after Lin Chuan’s departure. Three years after their last meeting, he participates in Danzō’s attempt to capture his former partner following Hiruzen Sarutobi’s death 65 104.

Personality

Terai is sociable, upbeat, and eager to find excitement even under Root’s brutal conditions. He frequently tries to draw the reserved Lin Chuan into conversations, gossip, or dangerous investigations, and finds Lin Chuan’s single-minded focus on training boring 35.

He is also competitive and quick-tempered when challenged. When another recruit objects to his partnership with Lin Chuan, Terai immediately demands that the hidden speaker identify themselves 31. Despite his impulsiveness, he can recognize danger, accepts sound tactical advice, and works effectively within a team 35 47.

Terai is cautious about revealing his abilities. During the Forest of Death examination, he lies about selecting a Fire Release technique while concealing that he chose Wind Release: Vacuum Sphere; Lin Chuan sees through the lie, and the two treat their mutual deception with amusement rather than hostility 32.

He retains affection for Lin Chuan despite their separation and opposing positions. During the later Root ambush, he openly says that he does not want them to kill one another, but nevertheless carries out the mission against his former partner 104.

Abilities & Skills

Wind Release

Terai’s primary chakra nature is Wind Release. His B-rank Wind Release: Vacuum Sphere fires high-speed, bullet-like chakra projectiles in a continuous barrage capable of penetrating flesh 32 35.

• Mastered Vacuum Sphere during the Forest of Death survival exercise 35.
• His Wind Release is regarded as difficult to evade by the remaining Root trainees 41.
• Uses Wind Release to disperse smoke during the pursuit of a rogue Konoha ninja in Tanzaku Town 44.
• During the attempt to capture Lin Chuan, produces a dense barrage of straight wind blades capable of cutting both solid matter and chakra energy. He uses this attack to intercept the wind blades from Lin Chuan’s sword; the technique is not named in the encounter 104.

Fire Release

Terai possesses Fire Release as a secondary chakra nature, though he is much less proficient with it than Wind Release 32.

• Can perform a weak Great Fireball Technique.
• Uses a fist-sized fireball to ignite wood and cook food during the Forest of Death exercise 32.
• His poor Fire Release output becomes a source of teasing from Lin Chuan 32.

Body Flicker and Swordsmanship

Terai is proficient in high-speed movement and close-quarters fighting.

• Uses Body Flicker to deliver the decisive strike against a trapped wild boar, piercing its heart through the armpit 34.
• Fights in coordination with Lin Chuan, acting as a feint while Lin Chuan uses his superior Body Flicker to attack from another angle 48.
• Helped eliminate wandering samurai, bandits, and a rogue ninja during Root field missions 43 46 48.
• Cuts off the sword arm and both legs of an immortal Jashin Cult follower, helping immobilize an enemy who survives a blade through the heart 48.

Survival and Infiltration

Terai adapts well to Root’s field exercises despite his privileged background.

• Helps Lin Chuan hunt, prepare food, preserve boar meat, and find shelter in the Forest of Death 32 34.
• Disguises himself as an orphan beggar for reconnaissance in Tanzaku Town, following Lin Chuan’s instructions to conceal his sword calluses and healthy appearance 42.
• Participates in stealth assassinations and target surveillance rather than relying only on direct combat 43 47.
• Observes a heavily guarded noble’s estate through binoculars and remains outside with Torune to support Lin Chuan and Fū’s infiltration 48.

Shadow Clone Technique

Terai already knows the Shadow Clone Technique when he begins studying his selected Wind Release ninjutsu in the Forest of Death 33.

• Leaves a Shadow Clone pretending to sleep while his real body escapes the alliance’s camp with Lin Chuan 36.
• His clone stays beside Lin Chuan’s clone to cover the other recruits’ retreat, allowing him to appear to hold the rear without exposing his real body 37.

• Chiba Lin Chuan — Primary partner during Root training and field missions. Danzō orders Terai to build a relationship with him; their partnership develops through survival exercises, assassinations, and border patrols 31 41 46. After leaving Root, Lin Chuan continues to remember and miss Terai along with Fū and Torune. Their reunion three years later becomes a hostile encounter when Terai is ordered to help capture him. Terai expresses reluctance to fight, but Lin Chuan’s Shadow Clone stabs him through the chest during the battle 65 76 104.
• Shimura Danzō — Clan elder and Root authority figure. Danzō’s interest in Lin Chuan leads him to instruct Terai to befriend him 31. Terai later obeys Danzō’s order to capture Lin Chuan after Hiruzen’s death 104.
• Fū Yamanaka — Fellow elite Root trainee and temporary ally during the Forest of Death conflict and later border missions 36 48. They later join Torune in the failed attempt to capture Lin Chuan 104.
• Torune Aburame — Fellow elite Root trainee and ally. Terai cooperates with him during the Forest of Death alliance and later tracking operation 36 48. They provide outside support during the noble’s estate infiltration and later participate together in the ambush against Lin Chuan 48 104.
• Sai and Shin — Survivors recruited by Terai into his Forest of Death alliance after their teams are attacked 35 36. Shin accompanies Terai on subsequent searches for additional allies 36.
• Leopard — Root field commander who oversees Terai’s border deployment and assassination test 45 47. Leopard later stops the battle against Lin Chuan and reports the failed capture to Danzō, including that Terai and Fū are expected to recover 104.
• Tsunade and Shizune — Encountered during the Tanzaku Town mission. Tsunade gives the disguised trainees money and later recognizes them during their pursuit of the rogue ninja. Terai reveals that they belong to the ANBU Training Class when she questions their identities; Shizune helps subdue their target 42 44.

Root Selection

• Endures Root’s initial training and receives the highest temporary code number, Number Thirty-Four, after being the last recruit to collapse in the endurance test 29.

Forest of Death

• Approaches Lin Chuan immediately after the trainees enter the forest and proposes that they cooperate 31.
• Helps kill and prepare a giant python, then provides the weak Fire Release needed to start a cooking fire 32.
• Serves as Lin Chuan’s close-combat partner in trapping and killing a giant boar, securing enough food for several days 34.
• Builds an alliance against a larger faction that is murdering high-ranked candidates, recruiting Sai, Shin, Number Thirty, Fū, Torune, and other survivors 35 36.
• Recognizes that the hastily assembled alliance lacks cohesion and accepts Lin Chuan’s warning about an infiltrator 36.

• Selects the mission scroll assigning them to hunt a Chunin-level rogue Konoha ninja in Tanzaku Town. His advance knowledge concerns only the outside deployment, not the difficulty of the randomly assigned target 41.

Tanzaku Town Mission

• Poses as an orphan beggar alongside Lin Chuan to surveil a rogue Konoha ninja 42.
• Receives alms from Tsunade with Lin Chuan, but a casino thug steals the money before they can buy food. The pair maintain their disguise rather than retaliating immediately 42 43.
• Assists in eliminating the target’s casino subordinates, disperses the target’s smoke screen, and helps capture him 43 44.
• Reveals their status as ANBU trainees when Tsunade challenges their identities 44.
• Beheads and burns the rogue ninja’s corpse on Lin Chuan’s orders after Lin Chuan executes the captive 44.
• Returns to Root with the target’s head and reports the encounter with Tsunade. Neither he nor Lin Chuan receives a mission reward 45.

Border Purge and Assassination Tests

• Patrols the eastern sector of the northern Land of Fire border with Lin Chuan, eliminating armed samurai who threaten refugees at a coastal dock 46.
• Enters the Land of Hot Water in civilian clothing for Leopard’s assassination test, which requires each trainee to return with ten pairs of samurai hands 47.
• Joins Lin Chuan in infiltrating a bandit stronghold in the Land of Hot Water and uses a feint to create an opening against a Chakra Blade-wielding Jashin Cult follower 47 48.
• Helps dismember and capture the immortal follower, then returns with him and the bandits’ hands to Leopard, who approves their mission 48.
• Supports Fū, Torune, and Lin Chuan during the investigation into missing Root operatives, though Fū excludes him from the estate infiltration due to Lin Chuan’s superior speed and Fū’s sensory abilities 48.

Separation from Lin Chuan

• Remains among the Root comrades Lin Chuan remembers after escaping the organization 65.
• Lin Chuan later misses Terai, Fū, and Torune while training outside Root, despite having no desire to return to the organization 76.
• Does not meet Lin Chuan again for three years before the later capture attempt 104.

Failed Capture after the Konoha Crush

Following Hiruzen Sarutobi’s death and funeral, Danzō sends Terai, Fū, and Torune to capture Lin Chuan. Terai confronts his former partner in the backyard wearing an ANBU mask and black cloak, acknowledging Lin Chuan’s departure from Root and saying that he does not want them to kill each other 104.

• Counters Lin Chuan’s sword-generated wind blades with his own Wind Release barrage 104.
• Is stabbed through the chest from behind by Lin Chuan’s Shadow Clone. He remarks that Lin Chuan is still as ruthless as ever before collapsing 104.
• The capture attempt fails, and Leopard intervenes to stop the battle. His subsequent report states that Terai and Fū are expected to recover; Danzō turns his attention to other plans 104.

• Terai is two years older than Lin Chuan 35.
• Lin Chuan mockingly calls him a “nepotism hire” because of his Shimura Clan background and connection to Danzō 34.
• Although he enjoys violence and excitement, Terai agrees that attacking unknown opponents without reconnaissance is unnecessarily dangerous 47.
