Background / History

Danzo grew up alongside Hiruzen Sarutobi and Maruboshi Kosuke and served with them under the Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju. Kosuke describes him as narrow-minded, particularly after Hiruzen became Hokage 52 63.

Before Lin Chuan’s recruitment, Danzo had sent Tenzō to assassinate Hiruzen. Hiruzen later recalls that this attempt gave him grounds to take Tenzō away from Root 40.

Appearance

Danzo is described as a bandage-wrapped man with only one eye remaining. He uses a cane when leaving Root’s training ground 13 26 28.

His justification for Root’s brutality is that everything serves Konoha’s future. He demands the erasure of recruits’ names, personal histories, and emotional attachments, while leaving the details of their selection to subordinates. His concern is the resulting operatives rather than the suffering required to produce them 28.

Danzo resents Hiruzen’s interference and regards valuable recruits as the fruits of his own labor. Nevertheless, he recognizes limits to his power: he yields to Itachi’s threat against village secrecy and later decides to lie low while Jiraiya appears likely to become Hokage 25 63 104.

Watching Konoha’s Young Talent

Danzo first takes notice of Lin Chuan through intelligence describing his rapid mastery of Water Clone and Water Shock Wave. He chooses surveillance rather than immediate recruitment because the Uchiha are his more urgent concern 13.

As rumors spread about violent Uchiha policing, Lin Chuan suspects Danzo of manipulating a murder case to turn public opinion against the clan. This is presented as Lin Chuan’s suspicion, rather than a directly witnessed operation 18.

Uchiha Massacre and Root Expansion

After the massacre, Hiruzen strips Danzo of his posts as Hokage Advisor and Root commander. Itachi’s threat concerning Sasuke further frustrates him. Root nevertheless recovers seventeen three-tomoe Sharingan; Danzo suspects Orochimaru took some missing eyes after receiving advance notice of the massacre from him 25.

Danzo responds to his political setback by recruiting more followers. He takes Fū from the Yamanaka clan and demands Shino from the Aburame clan. Torune volunteers in Shino’s place, and Danzo accepts without knowing about Torune’s Nano Venomous Insects 25.

Forcing Lin Chuan into Root

Danzo visits Lin Chuan’s home and demands that the seven-year-old enter the ANBU training department. Lin Chuan agrees because resistance could endanger his family. Danzo takes him away immediately, while the boy’s father subsequently appeals to Hiruzen 26 27.

Hiruzen considers restoring Danzo’s positions to negotiate the child’s release but doubts that such concessions would work. Danzo proceeds with Root’s indoctrination and delegates the recruits’ brutal selection process to Ryūma 26 28.

During this period, Danzo continues exchanging research materials with Orochimaru through Kabuto. Orochimaru also requests help arranging Kabuto’s entry into the Ninja Academy as part of his plans involving Sasuke 40.

Losing Lin Chuan to Hiruzen and Kosuke

After Kosuke requests help, Hiruzen discovers that Danzo has sent Lin Chuan undercover to the Land of Grass. The boy’s apparently battered condition upon returning strengthens Hiruzen’s resolve to intervene 52 62.

On the Hokage Tower roof, Danzo objects to surrendering a recruit he has painstakingly trained. Lin Chuan’s six-seal Water Dragon Bullet establishes his prior discipleship under Kosuke. Unable to keep him, Danzo produces his bloody mission record to make Hiruzen distrust him, hoping this will drive him back to Root 63.

Danzo leaves without Lin Chuan. Hiruzen explicitly warns him to stop taking children for ANBU training 64.

Capture Attempt After Hiruzen’s Death

Following Hiruzen’s funeral, Danzo sends Terai, Fū, and Torune to capture Lin Chuan alive. Lin Chuan inflicts apparently fatal wounds on Terai and Fū before Leopard intervenes. Leopard later reports the failed capture and that the two will recover 104.

Danzo turns to other plans. Believing the senior advisers will nominate Jiraiya as Hokage, he decides he has no immediate opening and must wait for another opportunity 104.
