Background / History

Roger had just finished dueling Rocks when Ron approached him to request entry into the Roger Pirates. Roger refused, citing Ron’s reputation as the “Devil Butcher” and the deaths at Bilen Village; he believed his crew would not accept someone who killed unarmed civilians. Ron’s refusal to justify himself further established their opposing moral outlooks 1.

Rocks had also attempted to recruit Roger, but Roger refused to cooperate with him because their goals and methods differed 2. Roger later reflected that a crew built without emotional bonds would eventually collapse under its own internal divisions—a direct contrast to the self-interested Rocks Pirates 5.

After Ochoku’s account led Roger to believe that Ron had abandoned the Kuja Pirates’ rescued slaves, Roger confronted Ron alongside Rayleigh and Gaban. Ron’s complete indifference toward the deaths angered Roger, who declared that he was glad to have rejected Ron’s earlier request to join his crew 22. Their conflict escalated into battle until Whitebeard openly chose to protect Ron, forcing Roger to withdraw rather than endanger his own crew against the Rocks Pirates 23 24.

When Ochoku’s betrayal became clear, Roger acknowledged that he had been deceived and apologized to Ron. Ron rejected the apology, maintaining that they were enemies 32.

Following the Rocks Pirates’ theft of his crew’s treasure, Roger encountered a peculiar Devil Fruit at a roadside stall. Rayleigh identified it as the Gum-Gum Fruit, but Roger suspected that its encyclopedia description was incomplete. After the fruit repeatedly rolled back toward him, Roger accepted the idea that it had chosen him and ate it. The fruit was actually the Human-Human Fruit, Mythical Zoan, Model: Nika 73 74 75.

Roger later fought Garp to test his new abilities and was badly injured. Despite those injuries, he and Rayleigh hurried through the Calm Belt to answer Shakky’s request for help against the Marine assault on Amazon Lily 104 110 122.

Their journey was interrupted by Ron, who forced them into battle. Roger refused Rayleigh’s advice to retreat, fearing that abandoning their attempt would doom Shakky and Amazon Lily. Rayleigh died during the confrontation, and Roger’s subsequent awakening of his Devil Fruit failed to secure victory against Ron 124 125 126 127 128 129.

Roger survived, but was devastated by Rayleigh’s death and blamed himself for refusing to withdraw. He eventually returned alone to the Oro Jackson and repeatedly apologized to Gaban and the crew. After Gaban confronted him over his despair, Roger resolved to become strong enough to protect his remaining companions; he did not tell the crew who had killed Rayleigh 147 177 178.

Personality

Roger places exceptional value on comradeship, responsibility, and emotional bonds. He rejects the idea that a crew can endure through strength alone, believing its members must remember why they stand together 5. His outrage at Ron stems not only from the deaths of the rescued slaves, but from Ron’s lack of remorse or concern for the agreement with the Kuja Pirates 22.

He is also impulsive when provoked. Ron’s insults and Gaban’s injury drive him to attack with little room for further discussion, yet he can restrain himself when Rayleigh and Gaban point out that continued fighting would put the Roger Pirates at a tactical disadvantage 23 24. Roger later accepts Annika’s decision to remain with Ron after Rayleigh urges him to respect her freedom 32.

Roger does not consider admitting fault shameful, openly apologizing for believing Ochoku’s accusations 32. His cheerful confidence also extends to his approach to piracy: when Ron’s bounty reaches 4.3 billion Beli and surpasses his own, Roger expresses no jealousy or alarm, stating that freedom matters more to him than fame or fortune. His loyalty can become dangerous stubbornness. Rayleigh’s death leaves Roger overwhelmed by guilt. Its demonstrated abilities include:

Nika Awakening

Roger awakens his Devil Fruit after Rayleigh’s death and a severe beating from Ron. The awakening is accompanied by the Drums of Liberation, white vapor, whitening and curling hair, and an eruption of Conqueror’s Haki 126 127.

The awakening does not make Roger invulnerable. Ron’s Haki-coated blows cause him to bleed, interrupt his laughter, and overwhelm him even after he transforms. His giant warhammer attack is subsequently overcome by Sage Art: Daytime Tiger 128 129.
