Background

Rocks had recently dueled Roger when he overheard Ron’s rejected request to join the Roger Pirates. Seeing Ron’s isolation, he mocked Roger’s standards and offered Ron a place among pirates who valued ruthlessness, strength, and madness over moral judgment. He promised to show Ron “the view from the top of the world,” then accepted him as the Rocks Pirates’ second apprentice; Kaido was the first. 1 2

His crew is a coalition of powerful, self-interested pirates rather than a loyal family. Whitebeard recognizes that most members regard Rocks only as a strong and generous partner, while several openly joke about replacing him if he dies. Rocks nevertheless maintains control through overwhelming strength, casually ejecting feuding crewmen from his ship and forcing Kaido to test Ron. 2 3

After Ron’s spar with Kaido escalates into a potentially lethal Tailed Beast Bomb, Rocks intercepts the attack with his sword and redirects it harmlessly into the sea. He dismisses Kaido’s outrage as youthful excess, then celebrates Ron’s victory with a banquet. 5 6

Defense and Reconstruction of Amazon Lily

Rocks accompanies the crew to Amazon Lily after Annika seeks their help. As Shiki transports the Saber of Xebec, Rocks reminds him that the expedition offers no profit. Information from God Valley’s slaves confirms to Rocks that the Celestial Dragons’ game conceals an attempt to eliminate the Davy Clan. He warns the crew that the treasure is bait and that the Government is preparing an ambush. He shares his private liquor, gives everyone until noon to decide whether to join, and orders Annika to remain on Hachinosu. Everyone except Annika chooses to accompany him, and she distributes safety charms before departure. 185

During the voyage, Rocks asks his companions to rescue Alice if he falls and they can help her.
