Background

Rocks had recently dueled Roger when he overheard Ron’s rejected request to join the Roger Pirates. Seeing Ron’s isolation, he mocked Roger’s standards and offered Ron a place among pirates who valued ruthlessness, strength, and madness over moral judgment. He promised to show Ron “the view from the top of the world,” then accepted him as the Rocks Pirates’ second apprentice; Kaido was the first. 1 2

His crew is a coalition of powerful, self-interested pirates rather than a loyal family. Whitebeard recognizes that most members regard Rocks only as a strong and generous partner, while several openly joke about replacing him if he dies.
