Power Progression

Background

Kaido was the first apprentice recruited by Rocks D. Zebek. While the senior Rocks Pirates argued over power and treasure, he focused on eating and pursuing a single goal: obtaining a Devil Fruit powerful enough to make him stronger, particularly after witnessing Whitebeard’s Tremor-Tremor Fruit 2.

Rocks selected Kaido to test the newly recruited Ron. Kaido’s combat experience initially gave him the advantage in the spar, but Ron’s superior strength, regeneration, and Tailed Beast Transformation overwhelmed him. When Ron formed a Tailed Beast Bomb, Rocks had to intervene to prevent Kaido from being killed 3 4 5.

Rather than seek revenge, Kaido accepted his defeat and challenged Ron to fight again after finding a suitable Devil Fruit. The two apprentices formed an alliance to protect one another within the unstable Rocks Pirates: powerful Devil Fruits would go to Kaido, while ordinary fruits would go to Ron 6.

After Ron’s promotion, Kaido sought full membership as well. He challenged Rocks, opened the Eight Gates through the Fifth Gate, and was decisively defeated; Rocks nevertheless accepted him as a full crew member 39.

Kaido eventually fulfills his long-standing ambition on Amazon Lily, where Ron gives him the Fish-Fish Fruit, Mythical Zoan, Azure Dragon Form. Ron had found the fruit in Mary Geoise and deliberately saved it for him rather than consuming it through his own ability-exchange system. Upon realizing that Ron had remembered their agreement, Kaido becomes tearfully grateful before transforming into an azure dragon 116 139.

Personality

Kaido is blunt, battle-hungry, and intensely driven by the pursuit of strength. He repeatedly regards powerful Devil Fruits as the fastest path to surpassing figures such as Rocks, Whitebeard, and Golden Lion, even when others warn him that the opportunity is a trap 6 39 40.

His ambition is balanced by a straightforward loyalty uncommon among the Rocks Pirates. He accepts Ron as an ally after their fight, values their “Intern Alliance,” and later recalls both Ron and Rocks while trapped in Sengoku’s ambush 6 19 42. He is also socially inexperienced, becoming visibly flustered around Shakky despite his confidence in battle 8.

Kaido is impulsive and often reckless. He secretly infiltrates Saint Sebastian alone for the rumored legendary Devil Fruit, falls for Sengoku’s fake fruit, and fights on even after recognizing that the operation was a trap 40 41 42.

His loyalty also extends to defending companions when they are absent or vulnerable. During the Heavenly Tribute operation, he threatens Stussy when she dismisses the prospect of leaving Ron and Whitebeard behind. Later, he helps organize the effort to defend Amazon Lily for Annika and explicitly identifies her as his reason for fighting the Navy 16 112 155.

Kaido eagerly shows off each new increase in strength. After acquiring the Azure Dragon Fruit, he immediately displays his transformation to Ron, Rocks, and Whitebeard, declares that he now has everything he needs, and flies off to challenge the Marines. Whitebeard recognizes that Kaido’s desire to offer help after obtaining a powerful fruit is partly an excuse to demonstrate his new abilities 131 139.

Repeated defeats gradually alter his view of power. After Rocks defeats his hybrid form and Eight Gates combination, Kaido accepts that Haki stands above everything else, while still valuing his fruit’s flight and transformation of his physique. His subsequent defeat by Garp reinforces this lesson, although seeing Ron’s Wood Release overwhelm Harald later makes him reconsider his earlier assessment 145 146 155 191.

Despite his recklessness, Kaido occasionally produces useful strategic ideas. When Ron worries that Imu and the Five Elders may attack Rocks at God Valley, Kaido suggests attacking Mary Geoise while they are away. Ron recognizes that threatening the Government’s headquarters could instead keep its leaders occupied and praises the idea 182.

Kaido has fought for survival since childhood and possesses extensive battle experience. During his first fight with Ron, he coats his spiked club in Armament Haki and pressures Ron with repeated attacks 4.

Story Role / Major Arcs

Rocks Pirates Apprentice

As Rocks’s first apprentice, Kaido serves as Ron’s first major opponent. His defeat establishes Ron’s unexpected strength, while Kaido’s reaction establishes his long-term obsession with acquiring a powerful Devil Fruit 2 3 4 5.

Heavenly Tribute Operation

Kaido joins Ron, Whitebeard, Stussy, and Ochoku in the ambush of a World Government convoy. He helps defend their speedboat from cannon fire, infiltrates the warship with Ron, and searches the cargo hold specifically for Devil Fruits rather than treasure 9 11 13.

When Stussy suggests leaving Ron and Whitebeard behind during the withdrawal, Kaido grips his club and threatens her, unwilling to abandon either his trusted senior or his alliance partner 16.

Intern Alliance and Eight Gates Training

Kaido’s alliance with Ron develops from a practical arrangement into a close, argumentative friendship. After watching Ron use the Seventh Gate, Kaido insists on learning the technique and succeeds in mastering the Eight Gates 19 34 36 38.

His desire to keep pace with Ron also motivates his request for full membership. Rocks initially demands that he win their fight, then reduces the condition to surviving three moves. Although Kaido’s Fifth Gate cannot overcome him, Rocks approves the promotion after their battle 39.

Saint Sebastian Incident

Obsessed with a rumored legendary Devil Fruit, Kaido investigates Saint Sebastian alone despite Rocks’s warning that it is likely a trap. Sengoku deceives him with a plastic fruit, and Kaido’s refusal to cooperate leads to a battle against Sengoku and the God’s Knights 40 41 42.

Kaido survives Sengoku’s attacks, the blonde God’s Knight’s ambush, and her apparent immortality by relying on the Sixth Gate and later Ron’s arrival. He ultimately fights alongside Ron against Sengoku before retreating from Imu, whose unknown power Ron judges too dangerous to confront directly 42 44 45 47.

During the escape, Ron instructs Kaido to look for Rocks and Whitebeard so that they can withdraw together. Once reunited afterward, Kaido insists that his severe back wound proves he contributed, provoking Whitebeard to tease him that scars on the back are disgraceful 48 52.

Voyage to Elbaf and Conflict with Harald

During the voyage, Kaido recruits Ron to help retaliate against Golden Lion and Silver Axe in a rock-paper-scissors contest in which winners slap the losers. After repeated losses to Silver Axe, Kaido opens the Fifth Gate to deliver his retaliation, damages the ship, and earns another punishment from Rocks. He then plots to disturb Rocks’s sleep by hammering on the repairs at night 57 58 59.

On Elbaf, Kaido protests when a giant guard attempts to exclude Ron from the Sun World because of his reputation. Once hostilities begin, he attacks the giant who previously blocked their path 61 64.

Ron shelters Kaido, Whitebeard, and Silver Axe inside his Golden Nine-Tailed Fox Demon before launching a massive Tailed Beast Bomb at Harald. Kaido later attacks Harald with the Sixth Gate and flame-wrapped punches, but recognizes that his opponent is superior in strength, Haki, and experience 68 73.

After Rocks spares Harald and the crew leaves Elbaf, Kaido celebrates their victory with Ron and sings the tune Ron calls “True Hero” or the “Rocks March” 77.

Defense of Amazon Lily and Azure Dragon Fruit

Kaido informs Rocks that he, Ron, Whitebeard, and Silver Axe intend to help Annika defend Amazon Lily from the Navy. Rocks joins the expedition, and the rest of the crew agrees to help without demanding profit 112.

When Ron returns to Amazon Lily, he offers Kaido a Devil Fruit souvenir. Kaido pretends to inspect it for authenticity, then immediately eats it. Realizing that Ron had brought the Azure Dragon Fruit specifically for him, he becomes emotional before transforming and proudly showing Rocks and Whitebeard his new dragon form 139.

Kaido flies off to fight the Navy, only to find the fleet already reduced to wreckage. While searching for an opponent, he discovers Kong attempting to escape, defeats him despite his attempt to negotiate, and brings him back nearly dead 140 141.

Convinced that his new powers have made him dramatically stronger, Kaido challenges Rocks using Human-Beast Form and the Fifth Gate. Rocks defeats him with a Conqueror’s Haki-coated sword strike and a subsequent beating. Kaido emerges believing that Haki is supreme, while still celebrating the advantages his fruit provides 144 145 146.

When Garp later infiltrates Amazon Lily to retrieve Kong’s body, Kaido exposes his disguise and attacks him. He escalates to Human-Beast Form and the Sixth Gate, but is beaten and withdraws to watch Ron’s fight with Garp alongside Rocks and Linlin. Although Rocks praises his decision to defend Amazon Lily for Annika, he refuses Kaido’s request for payment 152 153 155.

Sabaody Archipelago

After hearing about a Devil Fruit auction, Kaido initially claims that he and Ron no longer need fruits. During their discussion, he proposes that they eventually form the Beasts Pirates together, using their dragon and fox forms as inspiration and recruiting Mythical Zoan users. Ron explicitly notes that he has not agreed 161.

Kaido later accompanies Ron and Golden Lion to a casino, where repeated gambling losses turn into a robbery and a fight. When Zephyr arrives, Kaido and Golden Lion battle him together while Ron carries away the treasure with Annika. Their cooperation is hampered by mutual suspicion and near-friendly fire, and Zephyr strikes both of them away 164 165 167.

While seeking the Celestial Dragons’ Devil Fruits, Kaido and Ron ignore Daisy’s proposed alliance and attack directly. Kaido knocks aside the suited guards, kills one Celestial Dragon, and mangles Saint Bud’s legs 173 175.

God Valley Expedition

When Ron raises the danger facing Rocks at God Valley, Kaido proposes attacking Mary Geoise while the Government’s leaders are occupied elsewhere. Ron praises the suggestion as a potential way to prevent Imu and the Five Elders from reaching Rocks. Kaido subsequently learns that Rocks belongs to the Davy Clan and is warned that Imu’s Black Conversion Domination can turn victims into puppets; Ron specifically urges him and Whitebeard to avoid being stabbed 182 183.

Before the expedition reaches God Valley, Rocks reveals a fortune-teller’s prediction that he will not return alive. Kaido rejects the prediction and angrily offers to have the fortune-teller killed after their return 188.

When Harald intercepts the crew at sea, Kaido transforms and attacks with Bolo Breath without first asking Ron for an enhancement. Harald deflects the attack and counters with a Conqueror’s Haki-coated sword strike. Rocks and Whitebeard intercept the blow while Ron pulls Kaido out of danger by his dragon tail 190.

Kaido then joins Ron and Whitebeard in a coordinated assault. After his ranged Bolo Breath is dispersed, he asks Ron to restrain Harald. Ron summons a Wood Dragon that binds Harald and drains his Haki, allowing Kaido to coil around him and fire at close range. Kaido escapes the explosion with burns, but Harald emerges again 191.

As the crew advances across God Valley, Rocks initially orders Kaido to handle Zephyr. Kaido instead follows Rocks after Ron proposes that Linlin take Garp; Linlin and Babel temporarily hold off the pursuing Marines while Kaido continues onward with Rocks, Ron, and Whitebeard 195.
