Background
Ron originated from “Blue Star” and was transported into the old pirate era roughly a year before his first encounter with Roger. His former life was marked by abandonment, his mother’s addiction and arrest, and the deaths of his grandparents; he became emotionally detached from that world after transmigrating. 1 10
Before joining the Rocks Pirates, Ron sought entry into the Roger Pirates because he admired their trust, restraint, and companionship. Roger rejected him over the Bilen Village massacre, where Ron killed both the bandits and villagers after the villagers had betrayed him. Ron viewed the killings as justified, while Roger considered them proof that Ron could not be trusted as a companion. 1
Rocks D. Zebek recruited Ron immediately after the rejection, naming him the Rocks Pirates’ second apprentice after Kaido. Ron accepted despite knowing that the crew was full of opportunists and potential betrayers, deciding that he would force his own path forward rather than return to a quiet life. 2
Although Ron initially felt isolated even during the banquet held in his honor, he gradually developed genuine attachments to the Rocks Pirates. He later credited Roger’s rejection with allowing him to meet Kaido and Whitebeard and become friends with Rocks, distinguishing that rejection from his continuing resentment over the Roger Pirates’ subsequent attack on him. 6 124
His memories of his grandmother remained emotionally significant despite his stated detachment from Blue Star. After the battle for Amazon Lily, he dreamed of his childhood and shared a final affectionate exchange with her before awakening his three-tomoe eyes. 141
Appearance
Ron is a young man with slightly disheveled black hair. His appearance changes drastically when he activates his chakra-based powers. 2 4
- Four-Tails transformation — Scarlet vertical pupils, an orange-red chakra cloak, enlarged body, and multiple tails. 4
- Nine-Tails Mode — Golden, flame-like chakra surrounding his body and forming extendable chakra arms. His hair lengthens, stands upright, and turns gold, while black magatama-like markings appear on his shoulders, chest, and back. 15 23
- Nine-Tailed Fox Demon — A colossal golden fox form larger than a warship. 15 16
- Seventh Gate of Wonder — Violent blue steam and a powerful aura that accompanies his enhanced physical state. 34
- Sage Mode — Altered pupils and orange or orange-red markings around his eyes. 89 124
- Sage Fox Mode with the Seventh Gate — Golden chakra, orange eye markings, and blue steam combine into a flowing, armor-like halo. 89 92 197
- Sharingan — Scarlet eyes with three tomoe; witnesses describe patterned red pupils. 141 177
- Temporary Marine disguise — Wears a clean Marine uniform and a Coat of Justice while traveling aboard Tsuru’s warship toward Amazon Lily. 123
Personality
Ron initially longs for a place where he can belong, which is why Roger’s rejection affects him more deeply than he admits. He remains composed when insulted or rejected, but he quickly becomes hostile toward anyone who tries to impose their moral standards on him. 1 22 23
He is pragmatic, opportunistic, and often ruthless. Ron treats promises as transactions, prioritizes Devil Fruits over treasure or romance, and is willing to threaten, manipulate, or kill when it serves his interests. His treatment of Ochoku and his indifference toward the other imprisoned slaves demonstrate how little he values conventional heroism. 8 14 27 29
Despite this, Ron is selectively compassionate. He frees Annika from her explosive collar without demanding a reward, later rescues her from Ochoku, and reassures her that she does not need to hide her insecurities around him. 14 31
Ron also has a mischievous sense of humor, especially around Kaido. He repeatedly teases him, invents false “sect rules” for the Eight Gates, and turns their rivalry into an increasingly genuine friendship. 19 36 37
His growing attachment to his companions makes him willing to consider their interests rather than merely his own. On Elbaf, he offers to return to the ship rather than force entry into the Sun World and complicate Rocks’s negotiations. When he learns that Harald’s agreement with the World Government has endangered Rocks over him, he refuses to remain uninvolved. 62 65
Ron remains cautious about threats capable of bypassing ordinary strength. He initially flees Imu and fears Black Conversion Domination, only abandoning that particular concern after discovering it cannot control him. His foreknowledge of God Valley similarly makes him take the operation seriously, especially because preparations aimed at him might still endanger his companions. 47 88 106 182
His compassion is not equivalent to conventional generosity. After apologizing to three children whose family’s cow Kaido stole, Ron joins the others in eating it, then offers to rob their family’s enemies when none of the pirates can afford compensation. Conversely, he refuses to take his anger at an impersonator out on a little girl deceived by the impostor. 55 87
Abilities & Skills
Haki and Swordsmanship
Ron initially possessed Intermediate Observation, Armament, and Conqueror’s Haki, as well as Intermediate swordsmanship. His Haki complements his abnormal physical abilities rather than defining his fighting style. 3 32
Training under Rocks and experience in battle subsequently raised all three types of Haki to Advanced, then Top-tier. By Chapter 121, his swordsmanship had also reached Advanced. 80 84 121
- Uses Armament Haki to reinforce his sword and break Annika’s explosive collar. 4 14
- Uses Conqueror’s Haki in direct clashes against Roger. 23
- Uses Observation Haki alongside Malice Perception to identify threats and hostile intent. 22 25
- Carries and fights with a long sword. 3 23
- Applies Conqueror’s Haki coating to a blade when blocking Kong’s punch. Kong judges his Haki comparable to his own but considers Ron insufficiently practiced in its use during their exchange. 135
- Can coat the numerous fists of True Several Thousand Hands with Haki, greatly increasing their offensive power. 126
- Uses his status panel to monitor even small increases in proficiency, allowing him to train all three types of Haki in near parallel. 107
Sage Body
Ron’s Sage Body grants him immense vitality, energy reserves, and accelerated regeneration. 3 4
- Heals severe injuries rapidly enough to invalidate Kaido’s injury-trading strategy. 4
- Supports prolonged use of his high-output techniques. 4 32
- Reduces, but does not eliminate, the danger posed by the Eight Gates; Ron still considers the Eighth Gate potentially fatal. 32 46
- Allows wounds from the Five Elders’ sword attacks to close before blood can seep out, supporting an aggressive fighting style that tolerates otherwise unavoidable hits. 93
- Accelerates his training by allowing him to recover and resume practice much faster than Kaido. 107
- Automatically converts its vast energy reserves into Haki when his Haki is close to depletion. Ron discovers this while maintaining a Haki-coated barrage with his wooden Buddha. 126
Four-Tails and Lava Release
Ron’s initial tailed-beast power is the Four-Tails, which grants him a destructive transformation and access to Lava Release. 3 4
- Enters an orange-red chakra-cloaked Tailed Beast Transformation. 4
- Produces and fires Tailed Beast Bombs with enough force to threaten Kaido and require Rocks’ intervention. 5
- Launches molten Lava Release projectiles while in Nine-Tailed Fox Demon form. 16
- The Four-Tails is Son Gokū, a sentient being within Ron who can later be released to act independently. 55 135
Nine-Tails
After using the Mysterious Roulette, Ron gained Nine-Tails and its associated powers. 14
- Nine-Tails Mode — Creates a golden chakra cloak and multiple extendable chakra arms capable of restraining enemies, carrying allies, or striking at range. 15 23 27
- Nine-Tailed Fox Demon — Transforms Ron into a gigantic golden fox capable of overwhelming large battlefields and carrying people within its inner space. 15 16 49
- Tailed Beast Bombs — Fires compressed energy attacks ranging from individual bombs to volleys of seven or more; their blasts can endanger Sengoku, Garp, and nearby allies alike. 18 29
- Chakra transfer — Can share Nine-Tails chakra with Kaido, dramatically increasing Kaido’s strength. 28 29
- Malice Perception — Detects hostile intent even when the source is concealed, allowing Ron to locate Ochoku. 14 25
- Sea traversal — Can stand and run across seawater, despite enemies assuming his transformations make him vulnerable to it. 15 18
- Crew-wide Chakra Cloaks — Can distribute chakra to numerous allies at once. The pale red cloaks given to the Rocks Pirates allow their recipients to walk on the sea. 194
- Sage Art: Super Multi Infinite Fist Bone — Extends three chakra arms from each side of his body to overwhelm Garp in a close-range punching exchange. 155
- The Nine-Tails is Kurama, who can communicate with Ron and eventually operate outside his body. 55 97 135
Ice Release
Ice Release was obtained from the Mysterious Roulette after Ron sacrificed two Devil Fruits. 31 32
- Creates massive ice structures and freezing attacks.
- Summons Ice Release: Ice Dragon, which overpowered Rayleigh’s initial sword slash before he destroyed it with repeated strikes. 35
- Forms ice weapons and a giant ice hand to attack and restrain Sengoku’s golden Buddha while Ron operates his Nine-Tailed Fox Demon form. 45
- Freezes a broad expanse of sea around his wooden Buddha, preventing the water from cushioning opponents struck by its fists. 125
Eight Gates
The Eight Gates are a body-enhancing physical technique Ron calls “Ultimate Taijutsu.” 32 34
- Seventh Gate of Wonder — Produces blue steam, extreme speed, and overwhelming striking force. 34
- Daytime Tiger — A compressed-air tiger-shaped attack that overpowered Roger’s Divine Departure and later badly injured Sengoku. 35 46
- Ron refuses to open the Eighth Gate due to its potentially lethal cost. 46
- Ron has begun teaching the technique to Kaido, using Nine-Tails chakra to help him sense the required internal energy. 37
- Kaido later credits Ron’s power with helping him unlock the Sixth Gate. 45
- Can stack the Seventh Gate with Sage Mode and Nine-Tails Mode rather than using the technique only in isolation. 89 92 197
- Uses the Eight Gates atop Sage Fox Mode to break through a combined attack by two pursuers during his escape from Mary Geoise. 119
Sage Mode
Ron obtained Mount Myōboku Sage Mode by consuming two Devil Fruits supplied by Linlin through the Mysterious Roulette. 84
- Absorbs natural energy and combines it with his chakra to produce senjutsu chakra, greatly enhancing ninjutsu, taijutsu, and genjutsu. 89
- Combines with Nine-Tails Mode to create Sage Fox Mode, which can be further enhanced with the Seventh Gate. 89 92
- Uses senjutsu chakra to damage Saint Gunko’s immortal body, reducing her to part of a leg before destroying the remainder. Ron considers whether senjutsu chakra and seawater can suppress her immortality. 91
- Reinforces chakra-arm attacks with both senjutsu and Haki when fighting the Five Elders. 93
- Provides the required state for Sage Art: Wood Release: True Several Thousand Hands. 121 124
Additional Tailed Beasts and External Release
Ron’s tailed-beast powers are associated with sentient beings who inhabit an inner space and can communicate with him. He first consciously meets Kurama and Son Gokū there in a dream, although he initially does not know how to release them. 55
| Tailed Beast | Name | Documented Connection to Ron |
|---|---|---|
| One-Tail | Shukaku | Appears outside Ron’s body, rides on his shoulder, and can be recalled inside. 178 |
| Four-Tails | Son Gokū | Ron’s original tailed beast and source of Lava Release; later released independently. 3 55 135 |
| Five-Tails | Kokuō | Listed as unlocked on Ron’s status panel and released alongside the other beasts against Kong. 121 135 |
| Eight-Tails | Gyuki | Obtained through the roulette with Sage Mode; later participates in independent combat outside Ron. 84 100 135 |
| Nine-Tails | Kurama | Source of Nine-Tails Mode and Malice Perception; communicates with Ron and fights independently after release. 14 55 135 |
- Can release individual beasts or select “Release all” through the system. 135 172
- External release switches the beasts’ energy transmission from internal to remote supply and explicitly has no adverse effect on Ron. 135
- Can recall released beasts with a command, including when their behavior becomes inconvenient. 101 178
- Uses the beasts for independent battlefield support; Kurama, Gyuki, Son Gokū, and Kokuō surround and bombard Kong on Amazon Lily. 135 138
- Entrusts Annika’s protection to the released beasts while he and Kaido pursue a Devil Fruit. 172
- Shukaku later describes Ron as able to freely draw on every tailed beast’s chakra. 186
Wood Release
Wood Release is listed among Ron’s triggered abilities by Chapter 121. His enormous chakra reserves and Sage Mode satisfy the requirements for its most demanding techniques. 121
- Sage Art: Wood Release: True Several Thousand Hands — Creates a colossal wooden Buddha with thousands of arms unfolding behind it. Ron stands on its forehead and directs its attacks against Roger and Rayleigh. 124
- Can reinforce the statue’s descending fists with Haki and sustain their barrage through his Sage Body’s automatic Haki replenishment. 126
- Recognizes other potential applications, including the Advent of a World of Trees and Wood Human Technique, although his consideration of them is distinct from a demonstrated use in those passages. 121
- Later agrees to provide Amazon Lily with a replacement town and goes to its devastated district with Annika to begin the rebuilding project. 158
Sage Eye / Sharingan
Ron’s Sage Eye is initially locked and remains so on his Chapter 121 status panel. After dreaming of his grandmother on Amazon Lily, he awakens eyes bearing three tomoe; Shukaku subsequently identifies him as having awakened the Sage Eye. 3 121 141 186
- Perception — Sees the routes along which Haki circulates through a person’s body and gathers in an attacking limb. 169
- Copying — Recognizes an apparent ability to copy moves, but has not tested it when reviewing his eye powers. 169
- Illusions — Produces convincing false sensory experiences through eye contact. Zephyr and Sakazuki both experience its effects. 169 177
- Can make Zephyr believe they are exchanging Haki-coated punches while Ron actually stabs him. Garp’s intervention exposes the illusion, and Zephyr warns him not to meet Ron’s eyes. 196
Resistance to Black Conversion Domination
Ron initially fears Imu’s ability to control others, but later discovers that Black Conversion Domination has no effect on him. 49 106
During the pursuit involving the Five Elders, black mist pierces Ron with tentacles and attempts to access his system. The system denies the request. His subsequent recognition of his immunity removes his earlier fear of being controlled through Imu’s stabbing attacks. 91 106
Mysterious Roulette
Ron possesses a hidden system called the Mysterious Roulette, visible only to him. It consumes Devil Fruits in exchange for random rewards. 3 14
- Consumed the Earth-Earth Fruit to receive Nine-Tails. 14
- Consumed the Jacket-Jacket Fruit and Bean-Bean Fruit to receive Ice Release and Eight Gates. 31 32
- Requires at least one Devil Fruit for each activation. 3 32
- Consumed two fruits supplied by Linlin to receive Eight-Tails and Mount Myōboku Sage Mode. 84
- Consumed fruits are reborn elsewhere in the world rather than permanently removed from circulation. 14 84
- Acquired techniques can arrive as instinctive memories, as though he has already practiced them extensively. 32
- Ron regards further unlocks—including higher eye powers and Six Paths Sage Mode—as a potential route toward becoming the Sage of Six Paths; these aspirations are not equivalent to confirmed awakenings. 115
Equipment
- Long sword — Ron’s primary weapon in standard combat; often reinforced with Armament and Conqueror’s Haki. 3 23
- Stolen Devil Fruits — Used as fuel for the Mysterious Roulette rather than eaten conventionally. 14 31
- Devil Fruit taken from Imu — Retrieves and packs away a fruit dropped by Imu before escaping Mary Geoise. 119
- Salvaged long blade — Retrieves a blade embedded in a Marine warship and uses it against Kong, but discards it after finding it unfamiliar to handle. 134 135
- Marine uniform and Coat of Justice — Temporarily wears these aboard Tsuru’s warship; the clothing does not establish an actual change of allegiance. 123
Relationships
- Rocks D. Zebek — Captain and recruiter. Rocks accepted Ron as the Rocks Pirates’ second apprentice after Roger rejected him, and later became increasingly fascinated by Ron’s abnormal growth. 2 35 36 He personally trains Ron in Haki and swordsmanship, refuses to abandon him over Harald’s demands, and eventually states that Ron is the person he values most aboard the ship. Ron comes to regard him as a friend and acts to protect his interests. 65 80 107 124 189
- Kaido — Fellow apprentice, rival, ally, and self-proclaimed brother in the Intern Alliance. Ron defeated Kaido in their first spar, shares chakra with him, and begins teaching him the Eight Gates. 4 5 6 28 37 Their original alliance includes mutual protection and an agreement that powerful Devil Fruits go to Kaido while ordinary ones go to Ron. Kaido refuses to enter Elbaf’s Sun World without him and later credits Ron’s assistance with reaching the Sixth Gate. 6 45 62
- Edward Newgate / Whitebeard — Protector and chosen older brother. Whitebeard publicly calls Ron his “little brother” and sides with him against Roger despite their long history. 23 24 Their later interactions include affectionate teasing, shared concern for Rocks, and cooperation in rescuing Amazon Lily. 105 106 141 182
- Lucia Annika — Former slave Ron freed from a World Government warship. Although he initially treats her as leverage against Shakky, Ron later rescues her from Ochoku; Annika freely chooses to remain with him as his cook. 14 19 31 32 She becomes genuinely happier and follows him closely during the voyage to Elbaf. Ron later entrusts her safety to the tailed beasts, and she helps secure the Rocks Pirates’ assistance for Amazon Lily. 57 141 172
- Gol D. Roger — Ideological adversary. Roger rejected Ron from his crew, later confronts him over the Kuja Pirates’ failed rescue, and eventually apologizes after learning Ochoku manipulated the conflict. 1 22 32 Their conflict renews during the journey to Amazon Lily, when Ron emphasizes that his grievance concerns their earlier attack rather than the rejection itself. Ron uses True Several Thousand Hands against Roger and later fights his Nika transformation. 123 124 125 128 129
- Silvers Rayleigh — A powerful opponent who repeatedly attempts to de-escalate Ron’s conflicts with the Roger Pirates. Ron has fought and injured him using the Nine-Tails and Seventh Gate. 23 27 34 35 Rayleigh again faces Ron alongside Roger during the battle on the frozen sea before Amazon Lily. 123 124 125
- Stussy — Pirate associate and frequent accomplice during the Heavenly Tribute raid. Their relationship is sarcastic but cooperative, particularly during the rescue of Annika and the division of stolen treasure. 13 14 19
- Ochoku — Traitor and enemy. Ochoku sold information to Sengoku, kidnapped Annika, and attempted to manipulate Ron; Ron killed him with a Tailed Beast Bomb. 25 27 29
- Imu — A powerful continuing enemy. Ron initially warns Rocks that Imu can allegedly control victims through a stab from a black-mist weapon. 49 After discovering that Black Conversion Domination cannot affect him, he becomes less fearful of direct encounters. He later rejects Imu’s assurances, attacks with a Tailed Beast Bomb, and escapes Mary Geoise with a dropped Devil Fruit. 91 106 119
- Charlotte Linlin — Crewmate and intermittent partner. Supplies the two Devil Fruits Ron uses to obtain Eight-Tails and Sage Mode, then travels with him to search for her child. Their cooperation remains uneasy: Ron detects persistent malice from her, and the tailed beasts accuse him of plotting against her. She nevertheless captures his impersonator and later lends him Zeus. 84 87 100 101 162
- Kurama, Son Gokū, Gyuki, Kokuō, and Shukaku — Sentient tailed-beast companions who reside within Ron and can be released outside him. Ron calls Kurama a partner, but their relationship includes arguments about confinement, being summoned chiefly for battles, and responsibility for their misbehavior. 55 97 101 135 178
- Golden Lion / Shiki — Crewmate, prank rival, and occasional accomplice. Ron strikes him with a Nine-Tails-enhanced spinning slap during a shipboard game, later discovers Shiki tried to trick him into drinking hard liquor, and joins him in plundering a casino. They also cooperate in preparing for God Valley. 57 80 165 182
- Silver Axe — Crewmate who volunteers to join the Intern Alliance when Ron is excluded from the Sun World, although Kaido objects. He later joins Ron, Kaido, and Annika in spying on Rocks’s date. 62 108
- Harald — Elbaf’s king and an opponent whose agreement with the World Government targets Ron’s place in the Rocks Pirates. Harald’s threats against Ron cause a rupture with Rocks, drawing Ron into the confrontation. 65 67
- Shakky — Kuja associate whose earlier rescue request contributes to Ron’s conflict with Roger. Ron later arrives to protect her during Kong’s attack on Amazon Lily, and she thanks him and the Rocks Pirates after the battle. 22 134 135 141
- Garp — Marine opponent whom Ron defeats on Amazon Lily and then spares, telling him that saving someone else had also saved himself. Ron also allows Kong to leave. Garp consequently considers himself personally indebted to Ron despite their opposing allegiances. 155 156 197
- Kong — Marine opponent whose Haki and direct strength challenge Ron in their initial exchange. Ron releases four tailed beasts against him; Kaido subsequently defeats and captures him. 135 138 141
- Zephyr — Marine adversary repeatedly deceived by Ron’s eye-based illusions. At God Valley, Ron stabs him while making him believe they are exchanging punches, leaving Zephyr especially wary of eye contact and reluctant to fight him alone. 169 177 196 197
- Zeus — Linlin’s thundercloud homie, whom Ron subdues and later uses as transportation. Zeus addresses him as “Lord Ron” and remains visibly afraid of him when Linlin lends his services again. 85 87 162
