Background

Ace grew up around Foosha Village and Mount Colubo under the care of Dadan’s household, where he trained under Garp and Rock. Garp’s brutal methods developed his endurance, while Rock taught him practical survival, combat judgment, and control rather than simply forcing him past his limits 300 410.

He formed a brotherly bond with Luffy and Sabo through fights, survival training, and life in the mountain forest. Sabo’s departure with Dragon left Ace determined to become strong enough that his brothers could meet again as equals 301 409 410.

Ace struggled with being Gol D. Roger’s son and feared that the world would define him solely through Roger’s legacy. Rock told him that his bloodline did not determine his identity and that Roger had entrusted him with Ace’s freedom to choose his own future 411. Ace values freedom, exploration, and self-determination. As a child, he admired Adventure Groups as a way to explore the sea freely without becoming a pirate; this ideal ultimately shaped the Spade Adventure Group 285 413.

Formation of the Spade Adventure Group

Shortly after setting sail, Ace was shipwrecked near Sixis Island and met Deuce. The pair survived a giant bird attack, discovered the Flame-Flame Fruit, and learned that only Ace had received its power because he took the first bite 412 413.

Ace quickly adapted his flames for combat and survival, while Deuce contributed boat design, planning, and practical caution. They built the first Striker and formally founded the Spade Adventure Group as captain and partner 413.

The group expanded in the Grand Line with recruits including Mihal, Scar, Rock Flow, Wallace, Bangxi, and Kotatsu. Ace defined the organization as an Adventure Group that could travel freely, help people, and oppose wrongdoing without becoming pirates 414.

Rise of Fire Fist Ace

The Spade Adventure Group gained recognition through rescues, escorts, exploration, bounty work, and attacks on pirates who abused civilians 415 419. Ace’s destruction of a slave market, while Deuce freed the captives, spread the name Fire Fist Ace across the New World 440.

The Marines later elevated the group’s merit rating, authorized access to support routes and joint assignments, and formally recorded Ace’s codename as Fire Fist 441.

Wano and the Onigashima Conflict

Ace initially entered Kaido’s territory seeking a worthy opponent, but witnessing Wano’s starvation, pollution, and oppression transformed his goal into confronting the source of the country’s suffering 441 442.

On Onigashima, Ace fought Yamato before learning that she also hated Kaido. He encouraged her to reject imposed identities, telling her that she did not need to become anyone else: she was Yamato 443 445.

Ace then challenged Kaido after Kaido struck Yamato. Though he injured Kaido and awakened Conqueror’s Haki, he was ultimately defeated, captured, and restrained with Seastone alongside his crew 446 447 448.
