Background

Ace grew up around Foosha Village and Mount Colubo under the care of Dadan’s household, where he trained under Garp and Rock. At nine years old, Ace was living with Rouge and seven-year-old Luffy in Foosha Village. They had been there for two years after Zephyr arranged their relocation. Dadan also watched over the boys during Garp’s repeated mountain-training exercises, treating their injuries and quietly protecting them when necessary 284 299.

He formed a brotherly bond with Luffy and Sabo through fights, survival training, and life in the mountain forest. Sabo’s departure with Dragon left Ace determined to become strong enough that his brothers could meet again as equals 301 409 410.

Ace struggled with being Gol D. Roger’s son and feared that the world would define him solely through Roger’s legacy. Personality

Rock encountered nine-year-old Ace in Foosha Village, where Ace initially confronted him with a wooden stick before recognizing the legendary Thunder Emperor. Their early interactions established Rock as both an intimidating instructor and a guardian willing to defend Ace’s individuality against assumptions about Roger’s bloodline 284 285 293.

During a training exercise, Ace fought five adult bandits while carrying Luffy on his back. When exhaustion and a shattered weapon left him unable to stop an attack, he turned to protect Luffy with his own body. Dadan intervened with her battle-axe, and Rock ended the exercise before the boys returned to Dadan’s household for treatment 298 299.

Rock later brought Sabo into the boys’ lives. Ace recognized their shared desire for freedom and insisted that Sabo become strong enough to survive before going to sea. Sparring, hunting, meals, and arguments gradually transformed the three into brothers 300 301.

When Sabo’s father used armed men to reclaim him, Ace resisted but stopped after the attackers threatened the brothers with guns. The group's transition into the New World included Rayleigh coating its vessel at Sabaody and a stay on Fish-Man Island, where Ace befriended Jinbe through a friendly battle. During the Purge War, the Spade crew assisted merchant ships, disaster survivors, and civilians caught in the fighting 440.
