Background

Nie Caizhu is Shen Luo's distant cousin and childhood fiancée. She travelled more than a thousand li from Yun Province to Chunhua County to meet the man she had never seen, not realizing that Shen Luo—the stranger escorting her—was that fiancé 290.

She refused an unwanted marriage into the Prefect's residence despite pressure from her family, declaring that she would rather die than submit. The refusal brought retaliation against the Nie family, including the closure of several family businesses in Cloud Prefecture 294 296. Rather than allow Shen Luo to be implicated, she tried repeatedly to leave Chunhua County with her maid Xiaochun in secret, only to be inexplicably returned to the Shen residence each time 297.

Her concealed nature surfaced after a white-haired demon fed her Nine-Leaf Grass in a hidden chamber beneath a temple well. The herb caused yellow demonic qi to erupt from her body and manifested luminous butterfly-like wings, which the demon identified as the maturation of Caizhu's bloodline 298.

After being taken to Mount Putuo, Caizhu became the disciple of Qinglian Fairy. Qinglian strictly confined her to cultivation, but personally guided her development and treated her well 803. Caizhu later rose to become Mount Putuo's young sect leader 1049.

Nie Caizhu normally appears human, but her Witch heritage manifests visibly when she uses inherited power.

Personality

Caizhu is gentle and initially cautious around strangers, but she is resolute when confronted with matters that violate her principles. Her rejection of the Prefect's marriage proposal, despite the consequences for her family, established her willingness to choose death over surrender 294.

She is deeply protective of Shen Luo and repeatedly accepts personal risk to aid him, from surrendering her place in the Immortal Apricot Assembly to help him obtain an Immortal Apricot to using costly Time Power during their escapes 805 1590. Though Shen Luo often tries to shield her, Caizhu increasingly insists on handling powerful enemies herself 1531.

Her determination can become stubbornness. She chose the dangerous Return-to-Origin Witch Formation despite the risk of losing control of her inherited power, believing that she needed greater strength for Mount Putuo and the increasingly unstable Three Realms 1842.
