Background

Shizune travels with Tsunade as her disciple, medical assistant, financial caretaker, and the person most often responsible for managing the consequences of Tsunade’s gambling and drinking. She is also Tonton’s caretaker, using the pig’s tracking ability to locate Tsunade when she disappears into gambling houses. 8 10

When Yamada Sōji seeks treatment for his terminal bloodline disease, Shizune is immediately more sympathetic than Tsunade. She privately meets with him at Yamada Pharmacy, examines his pain-relief ointment, and presents his payment offer and trauma-treatment theories to Tsunade. Her desire to take on the difficult case persuades Tsunade to allow the treatment under supervision. 5 6

Over the following year, Shizune helps develop and administer Sōji’s treatment. After his recovery, she gives him complete records, medicine formulas, dosage guidance, and relapse-prevention instructions. 7
