Background / History

Hotaru is a young descendant of the Tsuchigumo Clan from Mount Katsuragi in the Land of Grass 42 49. Because her mother died in childbirth and her father later passed away, her grandfather, En no Gyōja, sealed the powerful and destructive forbidden technique known as "Rage Hair Heaven" inside her body to protect their village 42 50. This forced isolation made her an outcast, as villagers feared the destructive power she carried and shunned her 43 45.

Unable to bear the confinement and loneliness, Hotaru fled her home and wandered across the desert toward the Land of Wind 42 43. Starving, exhausted, and barefoot, she crossed paths with Kaguya Yama (Yamada Sōji) in the freezing Gobi Desert, where she begged him for water and asked to accompany him so she wouldn't be alone 42 43. Sōji took her in, provided her with food, clothing, shelter, and basic ninja training, and eventually escorted her safely back to Mount Katsuragi to reunite with her grandfather 43 44 45 49.

Hotaru is a small, frail girl around twelve to thirteen years old 42.
