Background / History

Hotaru is a young descendant of the Tsuchigumo Clan from Mount Katsuragi in the Land of Grass 42 49. Because her mother died in childbirth and her father later passed away, her grandfather, En no Gyōja, sealed the powerful and destructive forbidden technique known as "Rage Hair Heaven" inside her body to protect their village 42 50. This forced isolation made her an outcast, as villagers feared the destructive power she carried and shunned her 43 45.

Unable to bear the confinement and loneliness, Hotaru fled her home and wandered across the desert toward the Land of Wind 42 43. Starving, exhausted, and barefoot, she crossed paths with Kaguya Yama (Yamada Sōji) in the freezing Gobi Desert, where she begged him for water and asked to accompany him so she wouldn't be alone 42 43. Sōji took her in, provided her with food, clothing, shelter, and basic ninja training, and eventually escorted her safely back to Mount Katsuragi to reunite with her grandfather 43 44 45 49.

Sunagakure attempted to seize Hotaru after learning that she carried the Tsuchigumo Clan's secret technique. Sōji refused to surrender her, defeated the pursuing Sand shinobi, and changed his route to bring her home, believing that remaining at his side would expose her to greater danger 47 48. During the ten-day journey to Mount Katsuragi, Hotaru endured repeated attacks by bounty hunters, missing-nin, mercenaries, and Sunagakure ANBU while relying on Sōji for protection 49.

At Mount Katsuragi, Hotaru tearfully reunited with En no Gyōja and apologized for running away. He comforted her and acknowledged the suffering she had endured 49. After Sōji criticized En no Gyōja for treating Hotaru as a weapon rather than a child, her grandfather agreed to consider guiding and educating her instead of keeping her in fearful confinement 50. Sōji departed Mount Katsuragi before dawn without waking Hotaru, leaving her asleep safely in her grandfather's care 51. Before leaving, he placed a scroll of medical and chakra techniques at En no Gyōja's room 51.

Sōji's Return and Departure from Mount Katsuragi

Sōji later returned to Mount Katsuragi with Karin, Ye Tong, and Suigetsu to retrieve Utakata and discuss taking Hotaru away. Hotaru greeted him enthusiastically and quickly befriended Karin, sharing her interest in food and the spiders she raised. En no Gyōja acknowledged that Rage Hair Heaven could be a curse rather than a blessing for a small clan, and accepted that Hotaru's future might lie beyond the mountain 192.

During negotiations over the Tsuchigumo Clan's participation in taking control of Kusagakure alongside Grass Flower, Sōji openly stated that Hotaru was the reason he had become involved in the clan's fate. One of his conditions for supporting the clan was that Hotaru accompany him and become a Hidden Mist ninja rather than a Grass ninja. Hotaru immediately declared that she wanted to go with him, and En no Gyōja accepted the agreement 195.

Although Hotaru also wanted to accompany the clan's expedition to Kusagakure, En no Gyōja ordered her to remain on Mount Katsuragi to protect the women, children, and elderly. He explained that the heirs to Rage Hair Heaven could not all be sent to the front. Hotaru accepted the order without arguing, while Karin promised to bring her local grass cakes 195.

Hidden Mist Training and Overseas Travel

Hotaru subsequently joined Sōji's circle in Kirigakure as a Shadow Guard reserve. Sōji distinguished her and Suigetsu from the fully qualified members and encouraged them to spend more time learning sealing techniques from Karin. At the Kaguya Clan Grounds, Karin supervised Hotaru's practice with Rage Hair Heaven inside a training barrier formed by six Sealing Pillars 205.

During this training, Hotaru revealed that an earlier attempt to use the forbidden technique on Mount Katsuragi had blown away half the mountaintop. The incident left her subconsciously afraid of circulating its chakra. With Karin's encouragement and sensory guidance, she completed a full circuit through both arms and returned the chakra to her dantian, maintaining the controlled circulation for less than three seconds 205.

Hotaru traveled with Hidden Mist's delegation to Konoha for negotiations concerning the joint Chunin Ninja Exams. Sōji also planned for her, Karin, and Utakata to train in Hidden Cloud 206. She then departed Konoha with Ye Tong and Mangetsu as an advance team, traveling by sea to Kumogakure with instructions to contact Mabui and prepare for the upcoming training 210.

At Kumogakure, Hotaru greeted Karin with an electricity-producing Lightning Release crystal she had obtained locally. When the Fourth Raikage asked about her place in the Shadow Guard, Sōji clarified that she was still a reserve undergoing training and evaluation 211. She later stayed at the training outpost, watching Karin's visit to the Waterfall of Truth alongside Sōji 213.

Hotaru is a small, frail girl around twelve to thirteen years old 42.

• Originally appeared extremely thin and emaciated like a withered branch from her desert travels, with sunken cheeks, cracked lips, and sand-caked hair 42.
