Ch. 201The Betrayer
Key plot points
- Squard, who had stabbed Whitebeard, confronts Werther and tells the other Whitebeard captains to escape. Werther rejects Squard’s attempt at a noble last stand, saying his betrayal has already seriously weakened Whitebeard.
- Werther defeats Squard with lightning and sword strikes, severing both arms before killing him. As he dies, Squard looks toward Whitebeard and hopes to be his son again in another life.
- Werther reflects that Squard was likely manipulated through naivety rather than self-interest, then watches the battle. He is impressed that Whitebeard remains devastatingly powerful despite multiple severe wounds.
- Whitebeard’s heart wound from Werther’s Electromagnetic Cannon suddenly causes him intense pain. Realizing he cannot reach Ace, Whitebeard orders his crew to protect Luffy, whose family connection to Garp may give him a chance to reach the execution platform.
- The Marines recognize the plan and target Luffy, but the Whitebeard Pirates shield him as he fights through the battlefield. Inazuma creates a raised bridge to the platform. Just as Luffy advances toward Ace, Garp appears and blocks his path.
Character developments and interactions
- Squard accepts that he is likely to die, but Werther sees his remorse and suspects he was a gullible victim of Marine manipulation. Squard’s final words affirm his lasting attachment to Whitebeard.
- Werther is contemptuous of betrayal and refuses to indulge Squard’s self-justification. He also acknowledges Whitebeard’s extraordinary strength, while choosing to observe rather than intervene.
- Whitebeard recognizes that his wounds have made a direct rescue impossible and entrusts the attempt to Luffy, mobilizing his crew to protect him.
- Luffy pushes forward with the Whitebeard Pirates’ help, only to face his grandfather, Garp. Their coming confrontation is left unresolved.
