Ch. 541Death Calamity!
Plot points and events
- Tony fights Katakuri while arguing with Crocodile over whether to kill or capture powerful enemies. Crocodile leaves Katakuri to Tony and calls in the order to release the Plague.
- Crocodile reveals that Undead Soldiers have been planting containers across Totto Land. They smash them open, releasing a green, airborne substance in crowded places throughout the islands: the “Death Calamity” has begun.
- Meanwhile, Loa reaches the ruined Charlotte castle on Whole Cake Island. After freezing the devastation as a kind of burial, he enters and cuts down the defenders who attack him.
- At a steel door, Loa faces Zeus and Prometheus, Big Mom’s living Homies. He freezes their combined fire-and-lightning attack and prepares to test whether they possess human nature.
Character developments
- Tony is focused on defeating Katakuri and refuses to let Crocodile take his opponent.
- Katakuri is furious and desperate to protect his family and Totto Land, but Tony keeps him from leaving the fight.
- Crocodile reveals the scale and purpose of the operation, showing that the attack is not limited to battlefield casualties.
- Loa acknowledges his responsibility for the destruction, despite not having directly caused it, and treats freezing the ruins as a gesture of respect. He remains merciless toward those who resist him.
Significant themes
- War’s civilian cost: The Plague threatens the townspeople and the foundations of Totto Land, not just its fighters.
- Power and responsibility: Loa recognizes his role in the catastrophe even while distancing himself from its immediate causes.
- Instrumentalizing life: Crocodile and Tony discuss enemies as resources, while the chapter questions whether beings like the Homies can be treated as people.
- Escalation and hidden power: The Undead Soldiers’ role in releasing the biological weapon shows that Loa’s forces are more dangerous than the world realizes.
Character interactions
- Tony and Crocodile trade barbs over their body counts before Crocodile leaves on Loa’s orders.
- Katakuri confronts both men, but Crocodile departs and Tony insists on keeping Katakuri occupied.
- Loa’s brief, somber reflection on the ruins contrasts with the castle’s survivors attacking him.
- Loa addresses Zeus and Prometheus as discarded creations and challenges their claim to human nature.
