Background

Chen Ling was a theater director and playwright in his previous life. He died after being crushed by a falling stage light, then awakened in another world inside the body of Chen Ling, retaining the body’s memories alongside his own consciousness. 2 3 12

The body’s adoptive parents, Chen Tan and Li Xiuchun, had murdered Chen Ling to remove his heart for Chen Yan’s transplant surgery, buried him in the Mass Grave, and concealed the death. An Ash Realm Convergence followed, after which Chen Ling resurrected without a heart. 9 34

His resurrection bound him to a mysterious Theater and its unseen Audience. The Audience treats his life as a performance, measures its interest through Expectation Value, and can seize control of his body when its interest falls too low. 10 11 34

Chen initially believed Chen Yan had survived the surgery and remained his devoted younger brother. He later learns that Chen Yan had died, while the version he continued seeing existed through Chen Ling’s power and the Audience’s manipulation. 31 34 44

Personality

Chen Ling approaches danger as both a survivor and a director. He instinctively studies conflict, relationships, and timing, then manipulates circumstances into more dramatic “plots” to maintain the Audience’s interest. His early experiments include engineering a public misunderstanding between Zhao Yi and Uncle Zhao. 5 6 7

He is highly adaptable under pressure. When Han Meng interrogates him about his movements and opera alibi, Chen Ling improvises convincing answers despite having little time to prepare. He later weaponizes official authorization from corrupt Enforcers before confronting Ice Spring Street’s survivors. 19 26

Despite his capacity for manipulation and brutality, Chen Ling originally recoiled from the idea of killing. His grief, betrayal, and the influence of the Twisted Theater God Path progressively erode that restraint; after massacring Ice Spring Street’s criminals, he recognizes that his compassion is fading. 23 36 50

His strongest motivation is returning to his original world and preventing the loss of the people he loved there. This goal leads him to join the Dusk Society despite knowing that its members are hunted by the Human Domains. 46 48 49

Awakening and the Audience

Resurrection and the Red-Paper Monster

After returning home, Chen Ling confronts the adoptive parents responsible for his murder. The Audience takes over when his Expectation falls too low, transforming him into a red-paper Calamity before Chen Ling regains control and escapes. 9 10 11 12

Enforcer Examination and Ice Spring Street

To obstruct investigations into himself, Chen Ling decides to become an Enforcer. During his examination period, he gains Slaughter Waltz, faces Han Meng’s suspicion, and violently dismantles the corrupt Ice Spring Street tavern operation while posing as a Reserve Seat candidate. 16 17 19 27 28

Chen Yan’s Death and the Ice Spring Street Massacre

Chen Ling realizes that Chen Yan is dead and that the Audience used the boy as an emotional prop. Driven by grief and rage, he massacres Ice Spring Street’s criminals, receives and then loses three divine blessings, and steps onto the Twisted Theater God Path through Chen Yan’s sacrifice. 34 36 38 40

Dusk Society Recruitment

After learning that Chu Muyun belongs to the Dusk Society, Chen Ling experiences a temporary return to his former world through a USB drive. He joins the Society as Red Heart 6 because its plan to “restart” history may allow him to return home and save those he lost. 43 46 48

Martial Way Ancient Treasury Mission

The Red King assigns Chen Ling to infiltrate the Martial Way Ancient Treasury and steal a Martial Way Dao Foundation Fragment. Chen plans to use his Enforcer status and Formless ability as cover, while confronting the possibility that advancement on his Twisted God Path may demand a performance in which at least fifty people die. 49
